R.I.P. The Elder Scrolls: Legends, you were a wasted potential

I had always thought, they should have integrated this to ESO before releasing. It did not happen.
Can they not just sell game's rights to another company or at least make its server files accesible to anyone who wants to create private server? I dunno, also it is a Microsoft subsidary. Microsoft does not like those kinda things. I feel sad.

And this is why TESL should of been implemented into ESO instead of Tales of Tribute, it was far more fun.

In my opinion, if a game cannot sustain itself independently, it may not be a good fit for ESO. Forcing its inclusion risks it not receiving the attention or development it truly needs to thrive.

Similarly, Tales of Tribute seems heavily reliant on ESO players participating for the sake of achievements and rewards rather than genuine interest. Without these incentives, I believe it would struggle to maintain a player base as well.

The Elder Scrolls Legends was plagued with various development issues which included the game having to be rebuilt from the ground up multiple times. It was built originally via Direwolf Digital, rebuilt via Sparkypants Studios, and had at least one unique build made for the Asian market.

I've also documented how the card design team who oversaw development during Sparkypants were hired despite lacking card design qualifications. No that is not speculation, I have the writing from the Sparkypants CEO as well as the official article that was posted on the Bethesda site which describe the hiring process and the exact qualifications that people had. Although they all certainly had a love for card games, that is not the same as card design experience. There were many good cards that came out for the game, but also some terrible ones that shaped some very unfun metagames. One of the archetypes that was made, still is hated by a huge number of community members to this day. Yup, that would be Invade.

One team member inadvertently made it known that they knew they would be without a job soon. This happening revealed how the game was planned to wind down well before all of the cards designed by the Sparkypants team were even released. This made me question some of the ethics regarding the game. For example; it was customary for design to give soul gem refunds to players during times that they balance changed any card(s) that players had previously invested into. Their original design for the Invade archetype was so horrendous that they had to change the entire mechanic to quell player unhappiness. And when players asked for soul gem refunds, it was originally made known that no refund was planned despite the entire archetype that players had bought into being nerfed. This occurrence was also despite the plan for the game entering maintenance mode being right on the cusp of being enacted. Eventually player demand was given into and a partial soul gem refund was granted.

I personally don't believe that Legends got a fair trial. Being under development multiple times made things quite dour. Some people questioned if the team from Direwolf Digital prioritized their own digital card game IP over their work on Legends since, under their tenure, Legends was lacking in some basic features such as spectating and in client tournaments. The content drought that resulted from rebuilding the game lasted longer than the year long content drought that ESO had after the release of Upper Craglorn. A huge amount of work went into redesigning the game which was also evidenced by the Quakcon demo made be Sparkypants being quite visually different from the finished product that they released later on. A number of card design blunders paved the way to numerous OTK combo decks that had a large impact on the competitive circuit where cash was on the line. And before all of the cards that the Sparkypants team had been working hard on were even released, the game was pushed to the side.

Again, to me that all just shows that the game didn't really get a fair shot. That is sort of abhorent to me since the game had alot of potential. The art was beautifully crafted. The voice lines (except for Mudcrab Merchant) were fun and memorable. The animations were several steps above the industry giant, Hearthstone. And yet it couldn't make it. And it's upsetting to see Castles being worked on as Legend's beauty fades to darkness.

(Since there are some critical things in this post, I emphasize that what I'm writing is based in fact. This post isn't meant to denigrate any person or any game. This post is to just show the fact that Legends had a tumultuous existence and share my opinion that such circumstances caused Legends to not have what I think is a fair hearing prior to the activation of maintenance mode and the closing of the servers at the end of next month. My experience with Legends included Legend rank finishes, top 10 ladder finishes, community tournament wins, and a top 8 in the equivalent of Legends "world championship" that they called the Master Series)

It was a great game until Bethesda killed it with its strange actions.

The company showed complete disrespect for the game community, which collected money for prizes and held tournaments on its own. Instead of helping community leaders and streamers (allocating small amounts for tournaments and upgrading the interface for holding tournaments), there was a sudden attempt to hold tournaments on its own on the platform where poker was broadcast.

Another signal was the change of Dire Wolf Digital, which made the game for another developer.
After that, the game interface changed, becoming a strange hybrid, the game introduced innovations that part of the community did not like.

This game is an anti-example of how a company should act with its game.

It really is such a shame. Even in development mode, it was faster to get a match than it is to queue random vet as a dps or get a battleground queue. I didn’t log in to enjoy its last moments, I figured I’d miss it more if I did. Definitely my favorite card game :(.

They could have kept it online for the single player campaigns instead of shutting it down completely. I've put some good money in this game ...

Really sad to see this one go. I signed up during the beta test (curious about the storyline) and have played mostly single player.
I haven't played for a while, but this game has always been my favorite card game.

It is very sad news, I hoped that this card game would be added to ESO someday :'(

I have mostly very good memories of ES Legends: beautiful art integrated with stories, professional audio dub with my favorite actors for my language, ability to earn currency to buy all items from just playing the game... And, of course, amazing promotion with a mount for ESO many years ago <3 I named him "Legend" after this beautiful card game.

The only thing I disliked that my cards were randomly chosen each match (sometimes I got only expensive cards which I couldn't use, while my opponent had more luck with cheaper and nice cards from the start). So the game was 50% luck based.

To be able to personally compare these card games, I've recently played some Tales of Tribute matches in ESO when I was leveling rapport for new companion... Sorry to everyone who likes it, but ToT is such a plain and boring game (especially compared to what I've mentioned about ES Legends). After few days, I stopped playing it at all. And now it's really discouraging to see that ES Legends will never be playable again, and ToT is the only card game we have now in the TES universe :'(

I hate when this happens. These kinda things which discourages me to play online games. They could at least release its source for us to create private servers. Or they could just shutdown servers and disable online section of the game except; matches include one player against another player (with using invitation code or similar). There is no reason to abolish whole game alltogether. But; it is Microsoft, it does things which our little minds cannot appreciate.

I appreciate that Nintendo re-released Animal Crossing Pocket Camp as a wholly single-player game when they shut down that game's servers. They also added new features such as a QR-code scan so you can have other player-characters still in your game.

I believe that (according to what I read on UESP) one of the TESL Asia servers had shut down already, but then was brought back up, and is now being shutdown a second time.

So it's possible for TESL to come back, but that doesn't seem very likely given the amount of time that it's been in maintenance mode. Some have made claims that the game had to shutdown as to allow for future licensing of Elder Scrolls materials, but I have my doubts about that.

    Greetings,

With this thread being more meant to discuss another game's features, we're going to go ahead and close it down. For further posts, we ask that you keep things more ESO related.

    Thank you for your understanding.
