redeem it on steam, link the account, run it once through steam (don't need to redownload the full game if you point the steam install to your current install), this will activate whatever was in the key, then continue as you were running the game without steam.

It is a little cumbersome, especially if you want to avoid redownloading, but quicker than waiting for support to maybe help you.
