Being a fan of Elder Scrolls with some experience playing MMO's, when I heard ESO was coming out it caught my attention. It didn't meet my expectations in the beginning, but a couple years later I saw it pop up on a "most improved" games list and decided to give it another shot, after reading the article. I've been around ever since.

TES Oblivion. I really liked the atmosphere in that game and was happy to see ESO managed to capture it fairly well. Also played Skyrim of course, but aesthetically I found it to be a bit ..... monochrome.
Please stop making requests for game features. ZOS have enough bad ideas as it is!

I watched my father playing Arena and Daggerfall when I was a kid, played Morrowind obsessively when I was 15, and also liked Oblivion and Skyrim a lot (actually I still have TES 3-5 installed and start a new game very now and then). I was sceptical about ESO at first, because I never cared for MMOs, but I ended up really enjoying it (not so much the MMO aspects, but the worldbuilding, stories and lore).

Heh. That's what I love most about Skyrim - gloomy and grey! In fact, before I can play the GOG release of Skyrim, I have to find a gloomy grey reshade.

For me it was a bit of both. I love the elder scrolls skyrim so that helped.
And I got very ill to the point that I got bed ridden and that got worse and worse throughout the years. My mental health was going down and then someone showed me eso and said that it would be good for me to play with other people. I tried and it helped me very much with depression and when the pain gets to much it helps distract me. I met lovely people which helped because out of game people get enough of someone who is ill and can not do fun stuff. In game I can mostly keep up and helps me having contact with people.

The other TES games brought me to ESO. From Arena to Skyrim, they lead me here. Haven't played the other spin offs though, but those shall not be named...

I used to hate role playing game before playing Fallout3 and TES5 Skyrim.
Bethesda game studio taught me true RPG, and how RPG should be.

"This is the game to write your own story and experience. We made the world, but the story is yours."

There're no computer game title which has those philosophy in my nation. (T_T)

That's right! I've kept thinking like you.
At this point, ZOS did great job.

I play Xbox and only like a handful of games (such as Skyrim, Oblivion, Fallout 4, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, KOA, Witcher) and with nothing new coming out that I liked in 2019 or on the horizon, I finally decided to try ESO as I was starting to struggle replaying them. I had avoided ESO for years as I thought you needed other people to play it and I had no-one and am quite shy (socially anxious?).

I’m so glad I did as it’s the most amazing game I’ve ever played and I’m gradually increasing my interactions with other players. Recently, I finally felt ready to try and and work out how to see zone chat and during the recent witches event, I grouped for the first time for the crow boss and it wasn’t as scary as I thought. I play every day, often for around 10-12 hours with breaks and admit I am addicted to my other, more beautiful world.

And, veteran TES player who know about older TES series than Skyrim taught me more TES knowledge
in this forum. That's also good experience for me.

WoW refugee since early 2021 - quit WoW [snip] ESO appealed because of the story-rich content. I was sold on the character creation screen - I don't have to play a sexy, busty young female! My alts are bad-arse older women. I'm playing through the content in order, trying as much as possible to play as though I joined ESO in... was it 2014? The beginning, anyway

Well, not literally from the beginning... Daggerfall, does it still count? I've never played Arena. But I am a fan of the series for more than 20 years now. That's why ESO was obvious choice, and that's why I could care less about all the endless fuss with a class balance, sets, grind, dps numbers, ping in Cyrodiil etc. I am here for the world and the story.

I've played all the mail-sequence Elder Scrolls games from ... Elder Scrolls through to Oblivion. I particularly loved Daggerfall - it was horribly buggy but some of the bugs were fun - you could force your way through gaps in the ceiling and walk along the outside of the geometry to find bits of unconnected content. Loved (love) Skyrim but not so keen on Oblivion.

Fan of the Fallout series and got fairly hooked on Skyrim in early 2012. Played ESO during beta but started on live around Orsinium. Well at the same time Fallout 4 got out 😅

I played a bit of Skyrim but never got into it that much. I am a long-time MMO player already.

The relatively ugly characters in character creation resulted in my not having an interest for a very long time. However, the advertising for Vampires/Werewolves for Dark Heart of Skyrim made me interested, as a fan of Underworld movies, and then I noticed Kate Beckinsale did a voice so I got more interested.

I planned on joining the game so I could play in a vampire roleplay guild, but somehow ended up starting a RP guild devoted to Mara and never played a vampire at all outside a character who lived for about 2 hours to be killed off in a story.

Really love the game now, up there as one of my favorite MMOs, definitely top 4 (along with EverQuest/EverQuest 2 and XIV). This game has very strong roleplay systems, and I love the storytelling. Literally had tears in my eyes just from a random quest in Balmora yesterday about a father trying to reunite with his children.

I originally started playing on PC following a recommendation from a role-play group and started playing on PC as a role player in a vampire guild. The role -play on PC was quite good, what with the whole laptop and text thing and I also quite enjoyed soloing on another character.

Played Skyrim and saw this recommended on steam on sale for 40$ (2015), bought it and it was cool despite not playing like it, accidently discovered animation canceling/weaving by mashing LA with jabs and then experimenting with other skills and the rest is history.

Since you can’t combine answers, picked other.

I came to Elder Scrolls as I liked to create, not just use, mods, and the best toolkits, and the most open worlds, were TES ones. I added ESO to my collection in order to play cooperatively, which is not so good in the single-player games. Yes attempts were made but they didn’t work. I did not expect to create mods for ESO, but the circle of friends I moved with were also from the TES mod-making community, and they play the same way. A lot of us sate our urge to change the world with housing, and outfits.

Hubby started playing when the Morrowind chapter released. I started playing when he convinced me that I would like the quests because they were cool like Skyrim, which I played a ton.

I stayed for the MMO aspect, and found I quite like raiding and PvP.

I was drawn to ESO because of the Elder Scrolls franchise and the quality of lore and deep game-play that I came to expect from the series, and for a while ESO was that, but I can't say it is anymore. After Summerset it never felt like I was playing my personal quest as a player in an Elder Scrolls universe, as it gradually shifted to watching NPCs playing out a one-track story where everything is decided for you with no difference in outcome and little to no stakes for the player anymore. The 'play-in-any-order' idea and lack of world story development or character growth has left the lore stagnant.

    The combat system.
You can fire skills off as long as you have the resource, really hate the skills with cooldown timer.

Skyrim was my first Elder Scrolls game. After years of playing WoW I figured I'd try ESO and here I am two years later <3 Could probably say this is my favorite game tbh
