The alternative isn't any better. You will either get maintenance or infinite errors. You won't be able to play all day long no matter what.

Or we can have what we do currently... Lots of maintenance and errors; the best of both worlds!

    Many years.

I don't mind the maintenance so much. Just let's me know that there are people in place to "handle" things on a regular basis.
There was a period of time a couple months ago though where I'd log in to play and I ran into the maintenance wall during my multiple attempts to play throughout the month (god that sucked). This was before I started catching the update ticker on the top of the forums here. I'm glad they do that...cause it threw me for a loop not so long ago and I took a break.

Honestly, I'd be concerned if other types of similar games didn't take maintenance this seriously.

A lot of games hotfix things, and dont need to take servers down for hours every week to do so.

Yeah, but they might as well get the low-hanging fruit while they're fixing things.

The art dept has really been on their game since Morrowind. Wait, did I just non sequitur? Sorry. Happens.

Yes there are many positive things ZoS has done this patch but this is 4am complain about maintenance and the things that are still broke time for cranky up too late people's . Stay on target .

No ETA. There is never an ETA in this game. It's too difficult to say two hours and we will update you if longer.

This is my first MMO and I love it. I understand that maintenance must happen. I am in no way complaining whatsoever, but I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed that maintenance starts in just 30 minutes or so. Tonight is the first night in weeks I could have played all night if I wanted to. It's not their fault that my schedule lined up this way.

Oh well, I wasn't even sure what I was doing in the game anyways, so then I see that server message, and I thought "Oh, I broke it!"

At least they take time to do maintenance. I'd rather they do that instead of doing nothing at all.

They might as well do nothing. The maintenance is useless and never improves stability. They probably just stare at the screen for a few hours and eat danishes. It's truly astonishing that these people still have jobs. It's got to be nepotism.

    Fine.

I'd rather them do maintenance and it take a total of 1 hour.

I'm pretty sure the people working for ZOS aren't all master coders, programmers, and engineers with PHDs and Masters in their fields so they can pull a 1-hour maintenance to address many problems because the time they have to take is a minor inconvenience to you.

Lets see, we had unplanned maintenance because an exploit was discovered.

Then we had some downtime because of an unexpected issue.

I guess Zos could have put off handling the unexpected issue Thursday night to appease those that have an aversion to maintenance. Would be funny since they would then complain because they cannot log into the game.

While Zos does have more maintenance than their peers, it seems rather short sighted to complain about them doing something about some issues with the game.

I don't mind the maintenance, I mind that I cannot easily/quickly see on the launcher an ETA or actual game server status.

I don't need to comment on speculations I may or may not have about development and quality practices, kind of inappropriate and arrogant to think otherwise, in my oh-so-humble opinion (grin).

But I really WOULD like a simple, color-coded visual reference for "server is up" and "server is down" on the launcher. I genuinely think it would resolve a lot of the recurrent angst over "not knowing", which, if I may point it out, seems to be the underlying frustration for most (which then grows to become more and more toxic the longer its left to fester).

My $0.02 worth (so, like, subject to serious fluctuations in value for anyone who is not me.)

[edit for typo and to add small, afterthought - could save you some money on concurrency spikes and the usual hammering on your auth servers, too... which may be considerable given the faster maintenance cycles you're using.]

There is no "must" about, Zenimax chose to go this route, it is perfectly possible to have a system where the customer need never experience downtime (at least not for purely maintenance / patches), how do you think Amazon, Google, etc are up 24/7 or why Guild Wars 2 doesn't have "maintenance" downtime.

I remember the maintenance from Blizzard's servers on World of Warcraft, it wasn't better or worse than this, but they had an estimated time for it.

I do believe it's quite difficult to have an uptime of 24/7 for an online game. Stuff breaks and needs taking care of; if stuff breaks and after repairing it needs some more downtime to repair the 'repairs', that's a bad business model.

The sad part is that used to be there - a red/green icon depending representing either the NA or EU server (back when the launcher selected the region) next to the game options dropdown. I suspect now they just don't know how to show the two different servers for the one launcher position since it's an in-game server toggle.

Instead we're stuck with refreshing forums for the top banner or closing and re-opening the launcher itself to see if the message is still there (or using the various discord bots).

I am not going back, World of Warcraft has been a thing of the past for some good years now. And nothing will bring me back there.

I started this MMO because of the world setting, the lore, as I have been playing Elder Scrolls games (single player) for a long time now.

And in case it just flew over your head, I wasn't really complaining about maintenance downtime per se. Oh well.

Dude, if ya'll want the King Kong of bad launches that are somehow still around today, you need look no further than ANARCHY ONLINE.

As for the exploits, no idea and don't reckon we will ever really know, since that kind of defeats the purpose of ensuring in the wild access is limited, if not eliminated, before most even knew it existed.

Personally, I think they should give titles or some kind of real in-game status to people who reported verified exploits and saved the game, us, and ZOS from a mess.

Maybe a super special and ultra sparkly fly swatter. Butterfly net? I could really did a butterfly net. Hell, you might even get me on PTS for such a thing. (I hung up my testing cap some years ago, but I'd be tempted!)

TBH it *has* been quite a LOT of late. Also, the EU login servers were down for 2-3 hours overnight (like 11:30pm-2:30am) a few days ago too.

My only gripe is the lack of ETA on their maintenance.

Like surely you can roughly guess how long it's going to be? Rounded to the closest hour?

We'll get that number and add an hour to it, and put it on the announcement (we expect the servers to. E down between 7:00 - 12:00 utc)

I play this on my days off because I won't pretty much all day when I do, but I don't mind the server being down. If I knew roughly when it was coming back on I'd be like okay, I'll do this, then that, then something else then by the time I'm done Eso will be back on.

It's only a game so it's not the end of the world but if I had an idea of when it was ending I could be a bit more productive with my day.
