Let's do challenge! One maintenance without single complaint about maintenance.

I almost choked on my coffee... lol...

In order to accomplish this challenge the forums would need to be inaccessable during maintenance!

It's like why even have a public test server if you're not going to use it for patching........

That is not the purpose of the PTS system, which is probably woefully small and wimpy. I doubt it would help.

Exactly what do you think they can do before maintenance? Doing work during maintenance is pretty much why you do maintenance.

obviously, you don't have an MBA in project management like I do.... which I have done software projects.... tell me what you would do then? release a broken product like they have? and patches can come out later like they have? this is beyond madness, this is not how anyone should run a business. to top it off their customers are us and they have no Public relations......I would not invest in a company that cannot talk to their customer for one which makes them stay in business and two act like they do not know what they are doing.

    This is not a car.

Historically, software is usually modified in a 'development' environment. This is subsequently tested in an 'acceptance' environment. Once approved, it is released into the production system where a period of 'production verification' takes place. This last step is really to ensure that the proven changes have been promoted correctly and completely.

The model that you have described, in several comments, suggests that the code is being modified and tested 'on the fly'.
That may be the case; it would explain the ongoing problems.

Hey guys, just a heads up that PC maintenance should be wrapping up in the next hour or two. In addition to the patch, we're also performing some additional non-patch related maintenance to our infrastructure. We'll let you know if this will end up lasting longer than the estimated time frame.

It is now 01:00 here. That makes eight hours.
As the time isn't recorded on your post, I'll guess (like everyone does) that your 'hour or two' is up.

    Did you have an update?

Exactly!! 7 hours of random maintenance, and we don't even get an update/idea of when it could possibly be over? I've been up for the past 4 hours waiting, and I'm sure there have been people waiting the whole time! I know it is necessary, but not having an estimated end time is ridiculous.

This is not random maintenance. This is the scheduled weekly maintenance. For consoles, it is just on a different day.

The schedule for weekly maintenance starts at 04:00 (ZOSTime).

For the past two incidences, it has been moved to the earlier time of 03:00.

Maybe I am mistaken, but they I think that they did consoles today as well.

It may not be 'random', but it qualifies as 'extraordinary'.

    Definitely not "random".

No, it is not beyond madness. Taking down the servers last week for two special maintenance events was the right thing to do. Perhaps avoidable, perhaps not, but the right thing to do. While I prefer that they don't have to, if it comes to it, this is exactly what I want them to be doing.

As for what they can do different, there are a number of different ideas of what might work. However, without knowing more details than "black box" analysis reveals, it is impossible to say what will work. Certain things are clearly not going to work, and one of them is attempting to use PTS. Whatever process they have would clearly not benefit from this. They might benefit from some manner of redundant server technology that allows them to bring up patches and updates in parallel to the Live server and then have a cutover, but when it comes down to it, it is far more reliable to take the server down, do what needs to be done, and then bring the server back up. Exactly what they are doing today. The main reason to use a redundant system is not to cut down on the maintenance time, it is to give them more time to fiddle with the patch before pushing it out.

As I see it, the main problem that ZOS has with their current process is not that their maintenance time is too long. From here, it appears that their main problem is that there is too much variability in their patch deployment process.

    Thanks @ZOS_GinaBruno for the info.

And please dont stare at the sun!!!

What do you think would be worse? Staring at the sun, or attempting to read an Elder Scroll? :dizzy:

Hey, an elder scroll at least gets me visions of doom and end of the world mayhem... hmmm... so yeah, not much difference.

My only gripe is the lack of ETA on their maintenance.

Like surely you can roughly guess how long it's going to be? Rounded to the closest hour?

We'll get that number and add an hour to it, and put it on the announcement (we expect the servers to. E down between 7:00 - 12:00 utc)

I play this on my days off because I won't pretty much all day when I do, but I don't mind the server being down. If I knew roughly when it was coming back on I'd be like okay, I'll do this, then that, then something else then by the time I'm done Eso will be back on.

It's only a game so it's not the end of the world but if I had an idea of when it was ending I could be a bit more productive with my day.

If this were the perspective of the majority, I imagine they would post ETAs.

But, as the perspective of the majority tends much more to be on the lines of, "OMG WTF Y U NO DO MAGIC MAINTENANCE USING TIME TRAVEL I WANT MONEY BECAUSE I HAD TO WAIT MORE THAN A DAY FOR GRATIFICATION!"

Like you, I appreciate a thoughtful ETA and understand that it in no way, shape, or form should be taken as a COMMITMENT because the words ESTIMATE and COMMITMENT have two, mutually exclusive, utterly opposite meanings.
