I remember watching a "documentary" on UFOs and they kept pronouncing it as "you-foes", as if "you-eff-ohs" was too long and tiresome to pronounce already.

Eso is a single syllable, so obviously that. W.o.W. is Wow. But some are unpronounceable as acronyms, like Sword Art Online would be "Sa-oh"? S.A.O. is easier and clearer. The band Presidents of the United States of America is Pusa or Potusa, but They Might Be Giants is T.M.B.G.

In German it is indeed "oofo".

When an acronym is easily pronouncable it is usually done. Pronounciation would differ from language to language though, so I'm not surprised not many English speakers would prefer E.S.O. to EEESO. I'd probably too, but in my native language I say something closer to EHZOH.

When there is an option in pronunciation of something I tend to go with what is closer to my second native language. Been bilingual since birth but that makes my choice of words sometimes a bit different from most. And I do use E.S.O too but there is no rhyme or reason why I swap between the too.

I used to play Star Trek Online a lot, S.T.O but I have never heard anyone ever call it S.T.O everyone I have ever talked to called it "sto", like it was a word of its own. So I guess I just did the same with this. World of Warcraft was never W.o.W after all, it was "wow". Some will say "IT HAS TO BE PRONOUNCED E.S.O ANYTHING ELSE IS WRONG!" but as long as we all know what we are talking about then who gives a F. I mean to be fair, English is one messed up language to begin with, and even English speakers can't decide on how to say everything, America, Britain...

I actually say "Elder Scrolls Online" when talking about it in normal conversation outside of the game, because most people I talk to IRL wouldn't know what the hell ESO stands for otherwise.

Listing a bunch of examples that are pronounced by saying each letter in no way means that all acronyms are pronounced that way. Why do people make arguments like that? That reasoning is as good as saying strawberries are red, raspberries are read, thinking fruit can be anything but red is wrong. Ugh.

SQL is regularly pronounced 'sequel'. ASCAP is regularly pronounced as a 2-syllable word.

Different rules for different acronyms. I've never actually used SQL or ASCAP in conversation - I do know that ASPCA is generally pronounced "Aye Es Pee See Aye"; however NATO is usually referred to as "Nay Toh" rather than "En Aye Tee Oh". I'm not sure there is officially a right or wrong way to pronounce ESO.

Or is it technically supposed to be called TESO? That would only complicate matters further.

I think you may be misunderstanding what a syllable is.

    E-S-O is three syllables.
    E-So is two syllables.

Either way, it's an extremely short set of sounds to make, so I'm not sure why people use "easier to say" based on length for pronouncing it all weird. :smirk:

I say E.S.O. Eee Ess Oh.

However, to be honest, the game is "The Elder Scrolls Online", not "Elder Scrolls Online". Therefore, it is T.E.S.O., not E.S.O or The E.S.O. In my opinion, T.E.S.O. is properly vocalized as "tesso".

I find that it is fun to say "TESO:TU" (Tamriel Unlimited) as "tesso too". The "TU" gets turned into "too", which sounds like "two", which it is. It is not as entertaining to say "TESO:M" as "tessom".
