    Why is PVP mostly just a damage contest ?

    because of proc sets and increase damage sets armor.

    This was before proc sets made it into the game.

    Old but looking back at this thread do you think ZOS finally made the right decision about sustain?

    old, but still very relevant...

    now instead of wearing 3 offensive sets, folks might toss in one sustain set...or, just try to heavy attack you to death...

    personally for me - the no cp week in PvP was a big wake up call that I needed to get my resource management under control...

    I've even finally got to the point where I was able to switch out purple regen drinks for purple food...

    once cost reduction for stamina/magicka abilities go away - i may have to slide off the wagon and go back to drinking...

    I remember back on wabbajack days where you had healers just doing pure healing with healer sets.

    I remember sorcs and nbs dealing all the damage but wearing nothing but seducer warlock to sustain throughout the whole fight.

    I remember when dks use to run magnus seducer.

    It's just reiterating what several have said at this point, but balanced and more diverse builds will happen when the Health attribute has some utility. Right now you get what you need from Magicka or Stamina stacking, along with Spell Damage or Weapon Damage.
    If damage is tied to the same attributes and modifiers as defending there's no reason to invest in anything else. There are lots of ways it could be done. Buff durations could scale with Health, debuff durations could be reduced scaling with Health, Poison effectiveness could be reduced....healing received....the point is that Health currently is just the length of a red bar and nothing more.

    I don't know about everyone else but I have 2500 spell damage on my magplar and I do just fine killing anyone. If you think this game is just a damage race, you are doing something wrong and that's why you feel the game is unfair. Honestly this is the most balanced the game has EVER been. I don't know anything in the game right now that makes me think it is just "Unfair" to fight. Yes, Some things are SLIGHTLY better then others *cough cough* Bone pirates on a sorc. But many things are viable and fun to play right now. which is a far cry from previous patches.

    said that CP system was OP power creep imbalanced when it was implemented, and was told it was "not really an advantage". Campaigned for the return of softcaps since they were removed.

    All that aside, maybe if there was more substance to PVP over just killing the other players? Maybe if there were more strategy aspects in PVP supporting small man groups, or alternative utility builds the focus could become more than just stack and zerg kill.

    Maybe if the simplified stat system was changed to a more robust RPG stat system (yes I know OBLIVION was not an MMO), you might have more reasoning to bolster other stats that might contribute to other facets/advantages (ex. points into an "INTELLIGENCE" stat to add XP bonuses, skill progression bonuses, and certain skill advantages, etc.).

    Is there any PVP out there that isn't mostly about burst damage - or, killing the other person before they can run or kill you back?

    Humans can be pretty smart, so we tend to want to burst them down before they can use their brains against you.

    I know there are games where team support roles are very important, but at the end of the day, you seem to be mostly buffing teammates so they can kill faster, keeping teammates alive so the other team's burst damage does not kill them, or debuffing enemies so they do not burst your teammates down as fast.

    PvP has always been about dmg. at least in smaller groups/solo.

    I remember when i was pushing the argument FOR having dedicated tanks in cyro. i was told at the time that a dedicated tank was useless and general consensus was that if you couldnt kill you were useless. guys this was 1.2 i was being told this.

    fast forward to 1.6 and boom, dedicated tank/cc machine was like, not a bad idea for small/large group play. then they changed guard to be an actual guard and boom dedicated tanks/cc machines in small group play was like, not a necessity but it made it easier for everyone else.

    so i think the "pvp is all about burst and dmg" only applies to the solo, the ganker, and the cyrodiil duo group.
