What's the point in taking gear from weapon racks?

Are they suppose to be useful in deconstruction or selling them for gold because they don't seem to offer any experience deconstructing and they sell for 0 gold. Is this a bug or the way it should work?

The way is was supposed to work when it was introduced, is that if you had broken gear out in the field or in delve, you could grab some of this white gear and keep going.
  • Fleshreaper

Now as far as why the gear in town is complete garbage is because too many players were running around stealing the gear and making bank off of it. White staffs, shields, and two handed weapons were selling for 52 most with very little chance of getting caught. It was never intended to be a viable way to level professions or make gold.

They do give you a very small amount of inspiration when you break them down, so they aren't completely useless.

It was done more to keep the game in line with past ES games, where you could steal weapons and armor that you found lying around.

Orignally at launch they were worth some gold and inspiration. But people were touring around and quickly filling their bags so it got nerfed hard. But now we have the Justice System so perhaps there's room for a middle ground where these items have some small value.

    You use it.
Considering how much pre-vet tutorial content has been nerfed since launch all that gear is a very viable option for the new people that don't want to deal with that gearing nonsense. For my last 2 alts I haven't used any other type of gear other then that until lvl 20..

They have tried to strike a strange balance between providing a world that feels "real" while also not giving a free and easy source of gold and skill leveling.

I believe they are mostly included for "role playing purposes". It makes sense that items lying on a table can actually be picked up rather than being glued to the furniture, and someone might want to role play a poor person who spends all their earned gold on drinks and gambling and never buys or crafts anything.

Those items give very little inspiration when deconstructing, but not quite zero, so they are of some very limited use for leveling up the craft. On rare occasions you also get an ingot out of them. When you are fresh out of Coldharbour and have absolutely no other weapon or armor of the correct type, they are sort of useful for a short while until you have found a few material nodes and can craft better gear and weapons yourself.

The way I heard it, it was (often) asked by players to make more objects in the world, like armor and weapon stands, be able to interact with. After all, you could already filch (non-buff) food stuffs from tables, but the weapons all seemed glued to their stands? Not very likely. So to make the world feel a little bit more lived in, this feature was added.

Of course, in order to not disturb the economy and unbalance crafting, these items have neither value, nor attributes, attached to them.

Anecdotally, it seems to me that rack items are more likely to be decent green items if you steal them undetected (in stealth) rather than just pick them up (either in town or in the wild). The ratio I've see is probably about 1 in 5 or so. I've found some decent low-level gear doing this as recently as a couple of weeks ago.

They exist because it's the best way to accidentally steal an item when you want to talk to a vendor. <3

I picked some up during a dungeon run because I was trying to fill my bag with loot before I got back to town. I was surprised it gave me Jack ****. I didn't know it was such a waste of space. Not even close, they didn't exist at launch. All the racks were decorative and non interactive. Then later they made them and food you saw actually able the be picked up. This was before the justice system so there was no penalty for picking them up. This meant they had to make them worth 0 with low inspiration and low chance of mats at deconstruction. They are just there to add to the environment, nothing more.

    They idea was realism.

But people (me included) found out you can simply raid your local armorer and weaponsmith vendor and get away with lots of gold...

    So they nerfed that.

I think it's a bad decision, since it's not like you're making thousands of gold... but now it felt... unreal because I'm wondering why can't I sell this sword I just picked up, compared to one I bought/loot from dead enemies? They're both not stolen items, which the vendor wouldn't be able to tell anyway. But one is ZERO gold, and the other is 40-60 gold....

But oh well. it's still better than before, where you can't pick up anything at all...

What's really odd about this thread is they do have a purpose.

Stealing them and fencing them gives Legerdemain points just the same as everything else in the game that you can steal. What else do you need them for?

You must have Auto Loot turned on. Green Armor and Weapons only come from containers, not from racks.

That's not true, you can pull green from the set pieces too. It's one of the first things I notice about the addition on the early PTS. And I still get the odd green off the racks as of yesterday.

As for use, I have a couple foraging alts I don't waist time leveling crafting to outfit. I use the racks to fill in gaps.

Strange, I have never pulled one. I hit the racks in a certain place every day. No, I am not going to tell you where, only that I can pull 120+ stolen items out of there on each haul.

no, because clutter adds to what needs to be loaded, which adds to lag.

One good thing about them is they (weapons and armor) scale to your level, can be upgraded and enchanted, this helps when leveling a low level character and you are at a odd number. (for those not in the know crafted weapons and armor are crafted at even levels).

Dont forget that the justice system isnt implemented everywhere, so its still very viable in a few specific places, which just happen to be near banks (which makes it handy)

Funnily enough, its far easier (or rather there are far greater amounts of white weapons/armour) to Pact than the other factions.

I like taking items from the racks or ones that are just laying about, especially armor pieces, and improving them and enchanting them for my own use. The reason being the look of the item. For example I have a favorite helmet that I liked the look of at lower levels, but when crafting it at higher levels it became too ornate and looked rather silly. By finding it in world, I get a helmet that looks like the low level helm but is scaled to my level. In fact, I even keep track of where I have found it so I can get another one when I've leveled up enough to need a new one.

The stolen ones do have a value and are useful for both deconstructing and selling them to a fence (it's not much gold but you increase your skill, though).

The ones that have no "steal" option and which you can just take from a rack have 0 value and give pretty much no inspiration when deconstructing them.

Don't forget this stuff could be helpful for "new" characters / players coming out of the Wailing Prison. Good way to gear up for "free" at low levels.
