Really want that chest and you are working in the area doing a quest? Give it 3-5 minutes (just like the anchors they're on a rotational timer also), IF that (no sarcasm intended) it's gonna repop. I'm pretty much finishing and tying up my lose ends Deshaan, without even trying to look for them I'm opening no less than 7-10 an hour on an average since I started ESO, and I'm crisscrossing that exact same spot I found that chest 3 or 4 times a quest. Hell I don't even pick up greens anymore.

It can be annoying when someone waits there in case you fail, true. They are not technically doing anything wrong by jumping in if you fail, but it is a tad immature, IMO. However I don't really have issue with that.

What I do, however, have issue with is the following. Say I unlock a chest, having no idea how many good items will be available to me before opening. Now I'm sure everyone who crafts has inventory issues when farming mats/chests. So I open a chest, grab what I can/have space for, then attempt to rummage through my bags to see what is of lesser importance so I can toss it and make room for whatever items remain. Then some child opens my already unlocked chest and grabs the item for which I was making room. Now that is pure and simple immature MMO behavior. Not "reportable" ...but I've played MMOs for over 15 yrs. Eventually once you do that to enough people, you end up with a server reputation and it bites you later on.

15 years - realy ?? just wondering wich games did you play - where ppl are polite and do think about others or a server reputation....???

simple advice - don`t be newbe - make a room in your bag before looting something... gosh... 15 years of gaming... omg...

Heh, I've only had one chest stolen from me. It was the second chest I ever found, a Master lock, and I got it unlocked the first try. I was so proud! Then a scamp nearby saw me and attacked me before I could loot it, so I had to kill it first. Apparently if you unlock a chest, it unlocks for everybody. While I was killing the scamp, another player grabbed the loot and ran.

It wasn't game ending or anything by any means, but I was annoyed. I was just starting, and the loot would've been nice. I do think they should at least have had to try to unlock it themselves, instead of mooching off my work.

I have no problem with taking or having a chest taken when i or they fail. After all we had our chance right? I do have a problem with people stealing the loot if i mistakenly unlock one not realising that my inventory was full.

I have autoloot set to on, so opening the chest and taking the content happens without my interaction.... Maybe that should be your choice too.

I thought this was the very purpose of the cooldown between tries? If you fail, someone else gets a shot. It's not an exploit or abuse of any kind, it's a purposefully placed mechanic?

You really reported someone over that? Really? That just baffles me..anyway If I see a chest that is being worked on I will leave them alone, however there is a cool down on the chest if you fail, meaning..it lets someone else have a try, I mean you did fail, It isn't yours until you open it and if you failed and someone else tries it is fair game.

This. The failure timer was made so people won't be greedy and take all the chests.

So far the only time I ever "fought" over a chest was in beta, I failed to open it (I had no idea how the hell to get lock picking to work here [too used to Skyrim) so I failed my first try, then the person next to me tried and failed, then I tried again and unlocked it, and then everyone went their separate ways.

If you are reporting that action OP, you are abusing the report function and wasting CS's time.

So you failed, it happens but you know what is more d0uche move? When you see a chest that is guarded by mobs, you start fighting them and then some d0uchebag comes along and steals it while you are fighting the mobs and then he/she even leaves you without any help with the mobs even. You can not take it until the mobs are killed and they will only target you since you are the only one attacking those mobs.

Now that, if something is irritating.

When that happens I hope the mob has an AOE and lure them to the other player.

When on my lvl 4 character I came across a person trying to loot a chest. I stood there and watched him try 3 times. After that I jumped on and unlocked it . He say "REALLY?!?, I was working on that..blah blah blah".
I don't think he realized I watched him Fail, Fail, Fail before I took a turn. Here is a couple of things about chests:
    - Chests are open world. They belong to no one.
    - There is a cool down that prevents people from hording chests.
    - There is no way to tell if a chest is unlocked. If someone has auto loot enabled and goes to pick an unlocked chest they will loot it instead.

    What I think chests need:
    - Generate agro. If someone is fighting a mob that is protecting the chest, next person comes up and tries it pulls the mobs agro.
    - When a chest is opened it is temporarily bound to the person who unlocks it for about 30-60secs, then becomes open world.

The game stops you from attempting twice in a row. If you fail, you lose out.

Not true, I've been bored on a beach with a ton of picks when I was learning and had no problem with four attempts - there's just a cooldown on the picks. Wait your 10 or 20 seconds, whatever it was I don't remember, and try try again.

They are able to try and open it. They got there first, they get the first try. That's fair.

But failing means you blew your try, and now someone else can have theirs. ZOS put a cooldown on the lockpicking ability after a failed try for a reason.

    this.

I wouldn't do the ninja thing here, but the cooldown is on purpose.

It's not really an offense that you can report, seeing as there's a cooldown after you fail to open a chest. That cooldown is there so other people can make an attempt at opening the chest should you fail, so everyone gets a fair chance.

Whilst one could argue that it's not a decent thing to do, the mechanics are there so everyone gets a fair shot. I personally wouldn't do it, since I know how it makes me feel when someone does it to me (it makes me rage, haha), but you can't really report them for it.

I was kind of questing with a guy for a couple of minutes.. you know what I mean... and he tried to open a box and failed. I guess he gave up or didn't want to take the time to keep trying, so we could keep on with the killing.. so I opened it.

It was a staff and he was a mage, so I gave it to him. He was kind of shocked.

I don't see stuff like this in this game very often. Oh well.

I honestly don't know why they didn't implement nodes\chests the same way GW2 did and make them shared. So what if two different people can loot the same chest? Each still has to be able to pick it themselves. So what if two people can loot the same node? Chests and nodes already spawn out of thin air (not like you see some NPC's dropping chests off someplace) so it's not that immersion breaking to allow sharing. Each character can still only loot a chest\node once (until re spawn), plus usually the stuff inside chests is not all that amazing anyway. The experience of finding the chest and picking the lock is fun, and everyone should get more chances to do it. You accumulate lockpicks from drawers and dressers that ridiculous anyway. Why not allow more uses of them?

If they put a timer on the chests and nodes (or total number of loots allowed) so they disappear, and randomize the re-spawn rate to something longer than 3-5 minutes (or even better randomize the location) then it should not impact the node supply and demand much at all.

Just seems they were kinda lazy when they came up with this mechanic and didn't learn the lessons of other mmo's on node\chest stealing.

I actually ran up to a chest, found it unlocked and looted it. As I was leaving I saw someone on the other side of the rock fighting an assassin bug and wondered if I had stolen their chest. I sent a message asking if it was theirs but they never answered me back. Made me feel bad because I try not to do that to people.

Even though I loathe this myself and would never lower my pride so low to steal like that. I actually think it should be in the game. All people in Tamriel are not the same. Some nice, some not etc.

Yes, it sucks if someone bluntly steals your chest, but it's not against the rules to be a thief in EsO. Hell, they are even going to introduce a thief guild!

There are ways though. Remember the name...maybe that person tries to join groups/guilds/raids later? A big nono. It's actually part of the EsO world. You choose your path, whatever it may be.

The game is still young, but already we are a bunch of guilds who "trades" names between us that would not be welcome in the guild because of their actions.

One suggestion could be that any player that does a provoking action against another, gets "pvp-flaged" and could be attacked. However, this would probebly just be abused by cowards who tries to get someone to provoke them, then 10 of their buddies attack.

As I said, is sucks, BUT, already the game has started to get a community.
And I can tell you one thing, anyone with a bad rep would have nothing to do with my guild, unless they proven themselves first.

The only thing that bothers me is when, as a mage, I'm looking for flax/jute/whatever to make robes and some prick WEARING ARMOUR comes and harvests the node I just spotted. It's thankfully rare.

This chest thing though...reporting someone because they rightly had at it when you failed to open it is, well...childish, selfish and a waste of the report peoples' time when they could be banning the copious amounts of bots infesting public dungeons.

Understand that the chest system works fine as is. The current second or so delay before your next attempt is to keep people from hoarding chests. When you fail to open a chest, don't act as though the chest's contents are your right just because you saw it first.

I'm guilty of doing that, but that's because one of my alts is a mage, and she needs it. It could be they need it for alts as well.

And I just watched some poor fellow attempt a chest eleven times. I was rooting for them, and had the cheer emote all ready to go. Alas, they apparently gave up. I went up to the chest, and it was a simple difficulty one. I promptly unlocked it, and was going to ask if they wanted the stuff inside, but they didn't reply. Ah well.

This very well might have been me. I usually walk away because chest loot isn't that big of a deal, but I saw it was a master chest and was excited to try it, so I did after they failed. I repeat, they had failed, and so I took my turn and was successful. I almost felt like a jerk, thinking I "took" it from them, but then remembered it's the same as running up to a resource faster than someone else...and that I was better at opening that chest than they were.
I'm glad I saw this thread though. I feel better about being a better lockpicker than that person, especially if that person reported me for being better at it. Is that an option in the report? "Player excelled at something I didn't, and so got the loot over me"
