I think it would be pretty sweet to pick your own passives. Could be similar to subclassing where you have to keep at least one of your race skills, can swap out the others.

This would be far more interesting than a race swap. I bet there are some neat combinations.

    As per the Racial Phylogeny,

Yes, Men and Mer can interbreed. Offspring typically look like their Mothers while carrying some Racial traits from the Father.

No, Khajiit and Argonians can not successfully breed with the other Races.

Races having set passives and skills is extremely problematic concept and I am surprised such a big and responsible company still haven’t made a right choice.

What’s next? Agrarian bonus for Argonians?

Races being naturally good at or adapted to certain things is a completely normal and understandable thing. Racial passives have been a thing since Arena, and in the grander scheme of Fantasy games, even longer than that. The older games even had subtle differences between different genders, which were dropped in Skyrim, and the Oblivion Remaster continued that trend, changing the minor stat difference into a race-themed Origin instead.

If Gary Gygax had decided to call the "races" in the original Dungeons & Dragons "species" back in the day, we wouldn't even have this concept of "racial traits for fantasy races are problematic" these days, because that's what they are: different species adapted to different environments and shaped through evolution. Racial passives are a combination of those natural biological traits, plus "cultural" traits, e.g. Orsimer and Redguards tend have very martial cultures, and thus it is expected that the average Orsimer or Redguard knows how to wield weapons well.

I would like to have the strongest possible dps, heal and tanking builds on the same character.
I would also like to have a character's racial background for role-playing reasons rather than being forced to play Dark Elf for my dps, Nord/Imperial for tank etc.
This would also fix the problem right now with no one playing Redguard or Breton in PvE outside of role-playing.

Breton is the META PVE healer race. That being said If ZoS is leaning into the “play how you want” everything goes mantra then perhaps they should remove racial passives and apply them as role passives so you can be an Orc healer or a Breton DPS.

I’m curious how are racial passives an “extremely problematic concept” in a game series that has had them forever as part of the lore and gameplay? In what sense are they problematic, game play wise, flexibility wise, something else? From your phrasing I have a suspicion where you’re operating from but I hope that you are confining your criticism to a game play perspective and not interjecting outside unrelated issues to a fantasy game with 30 years of established lore. Also Argonians already have bonuses of swimming quickly and poison resistance.

You can be an orc healer or breton dps without any issues.

Play how you want doesn't equal: This is the perfect meta. You can play how you want.

I thought this was going to be something completely different. Usually when people say subraces they mean they want like different furstock for khajiit, different types of argonians etc. Not..mixing racial passives all willy nilly.

This doesn't make sense, less so from a lore view, and plenty of people play bretons. I'm pretty sure they are one of the most popular races in general. If they would go to such lengths with passives, then they might as well remove it and make things even more samey and less RPG.
