So skill styles can now be bought from the crownstore?! Remember when they said in the live stream that skill styles would be free and earnable! Now they're in the crown store!!! That aged well. 😂 https://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/67241

This is honestly very disappointing ZOS. I'm so glad I screenshot that live stream. However I'm not surprised...

Where you really expecting skill styles and companions to always be free? it was obvious.

I think it's fine if the price isn't too high. At least i expected companions to cost 5000 crowns and they cost 1500

"All of these Skill Styles will be earnable" as in all of the ones they showed off in that specific update. They totally implied even at the time that future ones would be buyable.

We saw that these were coming to the Crown store as far back as testing them on PTS. It's also heavily implied that all of the forthcoming ones for the classes will also be in the Crown Store.

If you thought that there would never be a skill style added to the Crown Store ever, well... I have a bridge to sell you.

"all of these Skill Styles" was referring to the skill styles in update 42.
in fact the full quote was "By the way, in Gold Road, all of these Skill Styles will be earnable as in-game rewards."

Update 43 and 44 also have earnable Skill Styles.

These upcoming Skill Styles were in the Crown Store during update 44's PTS cycle.
We will likely get more earnable Skill Styles in future updates as well as Styles sold in the Crown Store.

Thanks for giving folks the full quote. Isn't it interesting how that part was conveniently left out?

Indeed, the skill styles shown in that stream and offered with Gold Road *were* all earnable in-game, as stated.

Of course they were eventually going to sell some on the crown store. Look, on one hand I don't like that things in life cost money, but this game isn't being provided to us by a charity. If they eliminated the crown store, the money it brings in would have to come from somewhere... likely an expensive required subscription and increased base game and DLC prices.

I personally appreciate the more optional approach to monetization that ESO takes. I can sub or buy some cosmetics if I want to, and can also continue to play for free at other times when I'm maybe busy or less into the game or playing something else.

This is exactly how I took that presentation, that only the skills styles she was talking about were the ones earnable in game. And since then we’ve had more skill styles earnable in game, and purchasable with fortunes and keys. I’ve always understood that at some point some skills styles would be sold in the crown store.

They said from the start that there will be earnable ones and Crown Store ones.

There are 32 earnable skill styles, and now 4 paid ones are coming. That easily makes skill styles the most earnable cosmetic category other than titles or dyes.

    I just hope they're cheap.

I find it surprising that someone only heard half a quote and then took it to mean that every skill style ever made by ZOS going forward in the future until the game shuts down would be earnable in game.

I think most adults who play this game understand that its purpose is to make money, so it isn't that shocking that they would eventually sell styles in the crown store. I just hope these new styles make flappy less annoying.

If a new feature comes into the game and you DONT think it’s going to be monetized I question if you’ve played the game longer than 6 months XD

Honestly, while it was expected.... I think it would have looked a lot better for Zenimax if they didn't monetize these. It's quite funny that they say Golden Pursuits was their answer to feedback wanting more earnable rewards in the game when they could have simply chosen to not monetize little things like this.

And originally if the twilight matriarch one was earnable, I planned to do whatever I had to content wise to get it since I wanted to see if it would make using that skill bearable since the current model/VFX/SFX for it drive me insane.... but since it's in the crown store (and for a limited time why????), now I won't be bothering with it and that's less time I'll be spending in-game once again, which means there's also no reason to reactivate my sub. And I've already been barely playing since the BG rework as is.

I can empathize with your position both as a frustrated consumer and a forum poster dealing with unexpected backlash, but it does seem like this was always the way it was going to be. There is no reality in which ZOS or any MMO company is going to create an easily monetized cosmetics feature and then not monetize it. It was just a matter of time. The only reason dyes aren't as locked to the crown store as they could be is because they're used as an achievement motivator.

Was not bait. If they are gonna add new skill styles to the crown store, add them to crown crates so we can buy them with endeavours then they'll still be earnable.

Maybe your definition of the word 'earnable' are just not the same as some other peoples.
I mean, we go to work and earn money to spend in the crown store. So I guess that fits the definition of 'earnable'. :D

While I somewhat understand your consternation, these are the very definition of "cosmetic" or "appearance only" that are non-gameplay and shiny colors that belong in a cash shop.

Of all the things to be frustrated about, this is pretty low on my list.

It's literally recoloring of things you already have. If that's not gonna be Crown purchased, exactly what should be?

Selling skill styles alone isn’t dishonest.

The time to be concerned would be when Skill Styles are removed from future achievement rewards, or when the sold styles become night/day better than ones earnable.

Knowing how our community handles putting their foot down, I wouldn’t doubt this as our path in the future… they’ll roll over for it when it happens, just like they did when Armory Slots were presented as Character unlocks instead of Account ones.

This pile-on is distressing. OP may have misunderstood her exact quote, but making a big deal out of pointing out a new feature is earnable through in-game activity shows they fully understand how excessive the amount of microtransactions in this game is and how it's a problem. I can fully understand OP feeling like it's a bait-and-switch, even if technically no lies were uttered.

    And OP's right. [snip]

Wouldn't it be incredible if all achievement rewards were available for purchase directly from the Crown Store?

I completely understand the need for games to generate additional revenue streams, and since time is often as valuable as money, why not make the "Godslayer" mount accessible to everyone? After all, many players simply don’t have the time to earn it by completing vSS.

    ... I heard you

I love ESO as most of you do!

In my view, one of the main reasons for the declining player numbers in ESO over the past few years is that achievement rewards lack uniqueness and quality compared to what’s offered in the Crown Store. I believe the best of the best mounts should only be obtainable through achievements, not purchases. Without meaningful goals to strive for, the motivation to keep playing diminishes.
