The top four ways to make gold are:
    1: Daily crafting writs.
    2: Thieving.
3: Excavation. (drops off after collecting all the 5k & 200k leads)
4: IA. (The junk that drops adds up quickly)

Play the game, craft some starter gear, farm solo arenas on norm till you're ready for vet, farm endless archive, join a trading guild, and finally sell recipes from farming endless archive.

Also consider farming mythic items. Ring of the Pale Order (my favorite for solo self healing shenanigans), Oakensoul Ring (great for simplifying gameplay to one bar while still having decent buffs), and Torc of the Last Ayleid King (haven't used it myself, but makes it so other set bonuses are disabled other than itself so just got worry about quality/weight of your gear).

Witchmother's Potent Brew (Increase Max Magicka by 2856, Max Health by 3094, and Magicka Recovery by 315 for 2 hours.
    • Trash Potions when feeling cheap: Regular CP150 Essence of Magicka pots that I obtain frequently from playing the game or Crown Tri-Restoration Potion obtained from dailies.
    • Crafted Potions: Essence of Spell Critical (Bugloss, Lady's Smock, and Water Hyacinth). Without magelight this is my primary means of obtaining Major Prophecy on my Sorc, which increases my Spell Critical Rating. This also heals and restores magicka. Essence of Immovability (Columbine, Corn Flower, and Wormwood). I use this in PvP, since this gives me stealth detection, knockback immunity, and restores magicka (better to use it when competent allies are nearby, since it might reveal that you are surrounded by multiple players in stealth and you will not have an emergency pot available after use). Essence of Invisibility with only 2 ingredients (Blue Entoloma, Namira's Rot, Nirnroot, or Spider Egg). I use this in PvE content that requires stealth and if I need more speed I'll use Rapid Maneuver before using the potion. Essence of Invisibility with 3 ingredients (Blessed Thistle, Blue Entoloma, and Namira's Rot). Very useful in PvP alongside the vampire Dark Stalker passive, since you'll be invisible, ignore movement speed penalty while in Crouch, and you'll have a 30% movement speed boost from Major Expedition (I always have this slotted when riding from point A to B in PvP land, since gankers are always lurking). My templar will mostly use Essence of Health (Tri-Stat Potion) Ingredients: (Mountain Flower, Columbine, and Bugloss).

right now materials are very near vendor pricing for every level except cp 150 - 160. If you do not mind shopping around you can find them at affordable prices.

you can deconstruct items you pick up for materials. Most crafters will make low end training gear cheap if you provide the materials and a good description of what you want crafted (this last part is very important as I usually ignore every "LF Grand Master Crafter" in zone I see)

sometimes it is better to just sell weapons and large pieces of armor for the gold.

Since you are not interested in crafting atm, all those collectibles you pick up from containers will be good to sell on a guild store. Even as an advanced crafter, I am always looking to complete a motif collection or get a recipe for my crafters to learn.

Join a no or low dues trading guild. I run 2 guilds that have basically just login online every month requirements and have just recently dropped the 1000 monthly sales requirement in one due to the slow trading environment. I know many of my friends and acquaintances that run trading guilds are doing the same. You can still be a solo player if you join a guild.

Columbine (~1,500 each pc/na). You can also do the South Elsweyr questline to make dragon rheum (~5,000 each) start dropping from dragons and do dragons.

Interesting that NA prices are higher. On EU, it was around 1000 for a columbine and maybe 3000 for rheum before the event (right now I have no clue). What happened to cornflowers, btw? They were extremely expensive for many years, but the price dropped to 70 each nowadays.

Alliance Spell Potions is what happened to cornflower and then to compound that other potions became more popular. 🙂

As for OP if you have Gold Road the bound scripts for use in Scribing sell to NPC Vendors for 999 gold each, that adds up pretty fast if you do the dailies everyday. 🙂

… to purchase his basic supplies and equipment from players who are actually in to trading?

I’m gonna be a very solo player 95% of the time I’m in the game. But I can surely contribute to the player-based economy by purchasing from them my food buffs, potions, and gear. I’m not looking to get ultra high end gear. Just stuff that will carry me through as I travel in Tamriel.

    So… Just questing? What?

My first character will not do any crafting.

Get the thieves guild questline if you don't already have it, and then go to Davon's Watch. There are two large ships in the Harbor that you can loot (steal) stuff from. At the helm of one of the ships, you can click the rudder wheel which will allow you to travel to Daggerfall in Glenumbra, and in that port, there are also two sail ships that you can loot stuff from. In fact, there is nobody on either of the ships in Daggerfall to catch you from stealing. So you can quite literally travel back and forth between the two ports resetting the ships and stealing stuff to sell to a fence.

I believe you need the thieves guild questline to maximize the number of items you can fence per day.

If you want to maximize your yield, you can keep doing this, but weed out the common items that sell for relatively little gold, and keep anything that has higher sale value.

I did this to earn enough gold to buy my first horse, buy my first "house," do my horse research, expand my bank space, buy my inventory pack expansions, etc. All before they started to give all this stuff away.

    So… Just questing? What?

Questing and killing mobs and selling what drops (NPC vendor) rather than deconstructing.

I never purchase food buffs, potions, or gear, though. Even on a brand new account, I use food I pick up or what comes in daily rewards, and gear and potions that drop. I am also not buffed at all times. I am only buffed when I need to be, which is probably less than half of the time.

Without crafted sets, it is a little harder, as it is necessary to wait until set pieces drop and can be added to the sticker book. When everything is collected, do random dungeons until enough transmute thingies are collected. Then make what gear is needed.

For someone who is not interested in crafting, and will not be doing writs because of this, I do suggest Provisioning, if nothing else. This allows for crafting of food buffs down the road.

As for writs, I don't do writs. I used to. It was a pain in the ***. When I started playing on XBox EU, I decided not to get on that treadmill and have been doing just fine. Both with gold supply in game, and with my mental health.

I'm not sure what that aversion to crafting is about.

Crafting in ESO, at least at a level that you would use to make some gold and be self-sufficient as a solo player, is not a career that you need to dedicate a character to. It's a bunch of skill lines you level on the side while playing.

I'd understand if it were for roleplaying reasons, like avoiding stealing or the assassin guild. But there are quite a lot of beneficial aspects to some basic crafting skills that don't require much investment of time or effort (or even thought).

I wouldn't recommend that. Begging in zone is not usually well received.

I'm not in a position to disagree with you. I took up crafting from the get go and have never begged myself. I've certainly seen plenty of toxicity in zone chat.

I can only speak from the perspective of someone who does make free stuff in response to such requests. I know that the game's design is geared towards funneling players into guilds but for all sorts of reasons, not everyone wants to do that.

Without a centralised auction house - again designed to funnel people into guilds - new players are left high and dry.

Once upon a time I also freely opened my homes with crafting stations and merchant + banker to new players but then one of them got weird and sexual. So now I prefer to dump levelling gear on them and leave it there.

Everyone has their own tastes and no-one has to defend them.

Many players enjoy nothing about crafting in any game. That's totally fine.

In ESO's case though, if you're not subscribed, then managing all of the crafting materials is a nightmare by design, because the developers want players to subscribe.

It can be made manageable with dexterous use of personal banker addons but is still an irritating time sink.

The first time I cancelled my subscription was a few weeks after the game first launched, which was pre the infinite storage crafting bag and those banker addons. When the only solution was to join a guild.

Finding myself spending a good 20 minutes at the end of every play session shuffling mostly crafting stuff back and forth between alts via the bank, I had to ask myself, do I want to keep doing this?

    You know the answer.

Everyone who enjoys any part of the game enough to play and pay anything helps to keep the game alive for everyone.

The majority of content in ESO was designed to be played like a single player game. You don't actually need anything from other players.

If you're into overland questing, public dungeons, killing the occasional world boss with other players, etc, then you can equip gear dropped from monsters and sell your inventory to merchants. No, that is not optimal, but ESO does not need to be played anywhere close to optimally to be enjoyed.

You can even participate in normal dungeons and trials by taking this approach.

My personal gold making process is looting every single mob, chest and container I come across while questing, leveling or farming stuff. I'm a bit privileged since I have the banker, merchant and decon assistants, but I use them a lot to slap the goods in the bank, decon colored gear and glyphs and then vendor white gear and trash. This way I get a lot of mats just by emptying my inventory, but if you don't have assistants, you can just follow roads in overland to find a traveling merchant and unload all the stuff on them. I also have Azandar's keepsake so I get his folios from containers and they often have white and green treasure items I vendor for extra gold. I get by like this since I accumulate lots of gold without actually ever trading anything. Sometimes if I've been fishing a lot, I hire a friend who's in a trade guild to sell my perfect roe (and sometimes aetherial dust) and let them keep the listing fees.

Edit to add: I forgot to mention thievery! I have a dedicated thief character who I sometimes use to farm safeboxes and containers in some city I feel like running around in. It's most useful to sell the green, blue and purple treasure and just destroy the white ones so you can sell more per day.

What I do is kill things, pick up everything, loot chests and then sell everything either to merchants in game or on guild trader for low prices (unless it is something that is worth a lot more)

They can be a great source of gold.

I've sunk a lot of hours into them. To make enough gold to play with housing.

But at this point I've spent more time in the Elder Scrolls franchise mindlessly cycling through alts auto-completing daily writs than enjoying honking great big worlds, open character development systems, and all round fun games.

You don't need to equip it. It just automatically stores all materials inside of it unless you change that in your settings. It will add materials into the bag for as long as you have plus. If you decide to drop Plus, you can't put new things but the stuff inside will stay there and is still usable. If you don't have Plus, it will pull stuff out to use that you can't put back in though, so be aware of that.

Are they purchased with both gold and crowns? Or either? Are there options to do either?
