Actually, toilets aren't new in the game. Fargrave tavern. Vile Manse in Reaper's March. It's just the first time one is available as a furnishing.

Most places in the game actually imply people use chamber pots. If you ever see a bucket next to a bed and wonder "why is that there?" That's why.

It was quite common in "ye olden days" to keep either a bucket or chamber pot underneath or beside your bed. Once you know what to look for, you notice them a lot. They either show up as buckets, pots, or some other container and are placed near beds or even near dressers in the game.

And then you have place like that Public Dungeon in Deshaan that has a row of buckets behind curtains....

Well you have lots of sewers like IC and Wayrest but not much connected to them.

The “toilets” in game you are referring to are not toilets, they are latrines. Big difference.

What's the difference? I'm not a native English speaker, and Wikipedia actually says "a latrine is a toilet..." - so to me it looks like not every toilet is a latrine, but latrines are a type of toilet.

A latrine is just a hole where stuff goes down into the ground. A toilet is connected to plumbing.

I don’t know if that is an official definition but it is a working one in my experience.
