If that is the case, I would really want them to release more than 2 dungeons a year. Maybe not 2 dungeon DLCs but perhaps you can put a 3rd dungeon into the zone they always release in Q4. This year obviously we get the Endless Archive (name I think was revealed in a livestream?) but looking to the future if Q3 is going to be QoL updates I would appreciate that trend to continue.

The thing that utterly obliterates the remaining tiny bits of my will to play is that this quarter three patch was announced as the quality of life and bugfix update, something that I had been looking forward to very much because this was something the game had needed desperately for many years - and then early on in the PTS patch notes it turned out that the only real purpose of this patch was once again to completely destroy the last potential bits of fun by once again changing combat around for absolutely no good reason whatsoever and throwing around yet more nerfs. :(
This is never-ending and I can't imagine anything more frustrating. We even have to be afraid of "quality of life" and "bugfix" updates. :( This is absolutely crazy. Sure, I know that all the other big patches are there to destroy any and all fun, but why also this one?

My personal opinion is that while there were a few quality of life updates (some very nice!) it seems like there should have been more since the concept of QoL updates was so featured. Such as the recently introduced “filet all” feature that the interface defaults to when you open a provisioning station.

    From the patch notes:
During the ESO Global Reveal back in January, we announced that we were taking the time during this development cycle to focus on polishing existing in-game systems and addressing some longstanding requests, which you’ll find throughout this update.

The passage that I've highlighted makes it sound like it might be a temporary thing for this year only.

Just stop placing parts of the main storyline in dungeons. Make them completely optional standalone plots, as they were before the Elsweyr and the introduction of a "year-long story" concept. I thought this year would be different with the announced change of scheme, but no, Scribes of Fate is again basically a part of prologue for Necrom. If that concept is still the case, I am even glad there will be no second dungeon DLC this year. Trying to go through them at my own pace storywise is always a pain, even with a guild specialzed for that.

Disconnect dungeons from the chapters and you can release them whenever you want, I don't care.

Sorry, this additional passage in the patch notes makes it sound like this is indeed a continuing practice going forward:
As mentioned earlier this year, we’ve taken a change in approach with this update where we’re taking more time for polish and quality of life improvements during this time of year.

Apologies if I misled with my previous comment.

Guess people were baited hard on "fixes and QoL" promises, as some were afraid most fixes aren't the ones people were waiting for and a lot of work were put on absolutely unnecessary stuff like uninspired "achievements", endeavour system etc. so if it's going forward like that there's nothing to look forward to really and people who are playing for the dungeon experience can literally leave the game for a year each time, making the return a less likely thing.

Well, I have no idea how much work it took to add the new achievements and endeavors, but my experience is that adding new things is often much easier than correcting bugs, especially when dealing with code that many people had worked on over the years. And it looks like there are a lot of bug fixes in U39. If everyone's personal "favorite" (or "most important") bug didn't get fixed this time around, that doesn't mean it won't get fixed eventually.

Like stuck in combat bug that is here since... like forever, is critical for everyone and now thanks to new QoL "improvements" makes leaving dungeons impossible?

Exactly. Whatever all these improvements are and are doing, I haven't noticed any changes since yesterday (aside from a few new achievements that popped up to me).

a lot of it was back end work that doesn't make a visible difference to us players. but it's still good that they are working on back end efficiency because that reduces the strain on the servers.

Yes, but it still feels like we didn't get anything new in this Q3, nothing that replaces a dungeon DLC. As if checking and correcting the brakes on my car would suddenly become a special service during the check-up. Technically making the game work is a prerequisite and not something to be considered commendable when it finally gets made, in my opinion.

well, the patch was a lot larger than you may think. U35/Lost Depths was 2.5GB, U36/Firesong was 2.7GB, U37/Scribes of Fate was 2.55GB and U39 is 3.35GB. I think that makes it fairly obvious why there was no DLC. it would've been simply too much work.

I never bought any of the dungeon DLC because I don't play dungeons that much, but I know how the OP feels. I felt the same when they went from doing full DLCs to just dungeons. The good part is it made the game cheaper for me, then they started giving away the story DLC so the last few years I've only needed to buy the chapters and whatever crown store items I wanted.

But it is disappointing to get less of what you enjoy from a game. Hopefully this will be a one-off like their year long performance updates was and they'll go back to more regular releases afterwards.

I believe they wanted to focus more on replayability from now on. they are still going to do story content but I think we are probably going to see more stuff like whatever that endless dungeon in Q4 is going to be.

My opinion is that at the moment ZOS is more focused on attracting new players than keeping old players. As a new player (joined in October 2022), I even like this company policy, with the usual rate of new content release, I just didn’t have time to complete it. I can only sympathize with the older players who are waiting for new content to be released.

Wait, was Update 39 the much heralded QoL and bug fix?

I barely noticed it. A couple of announcements for new "achievements" that I really don't care about; some notification that my necromancer had achieved some new state. That's all I saw.

And a reduction to the combustion passive :(

Unfortunately one thing I do expect to see is the widely loathed new set of endeavours, offering "more" alternatives for earning seals - where "more" simply means "more specific" as in "do this dungeon with a guild mate" compared to "do one dungeon".

Oh well, might finish weaning me off doing endeavours, and cut another thread tying me to ESO.

My understanding, which definitely could be wrong, was that we only got two dungeons because we are getting the yet-to-be-released never-ending dungeon instead.

So I'm also hoping that part of the change might be temporary and we'll get more four dungeons next year. The dungeon content is my favorite kind of content.

nope. we get the endless dungeon instead of the usual Q4 area DLC. there were no dungeons in Q3 to make space for developing all the fixes and changes. I suspect there will be another, perhaps smaller, set of fixes and changes in Q4 as well.

Right but the order of the Q's and what's in them can always be changed around. I thought I had read the reason the dungeons took the hit this particular year was because of that feature but I can't remember in what context. Perhaps it was just speculation and people guessing but my vague memory was that it was a more official discussion. Not a promise go back to before later but a justification on why the dungeons were cut.

I wish I could remember where I heard or read that.

There is also the fact that the Shadow over Morrowind arc is not a year-long adventure like the previous development cycles were. they are no longer obligated to follow the Dungeon->Chapter->Dungeon->Area formula.

Nah, the second dungeon DLC was dropped for the bugfix & QoL update. The endless dungeon thing is the quarter four update. The final update of a year is now reserved for a "system" update instead of a story DLC. This year's new "system" will be the endless dungeon. Not really something I would associate with "system" at all, but that's what was announced.

I am not seeing how this is better than the old way. A new chapter comes out then basically nothing for a year? (Yes, I know “endless dungeon” and two new dungeons. Great…)

Why stay subbed? This chapter even has less to do then previous ones.

I had assumed this year they were just trying to get out of the way of “Starfield”, but if this is the new cadence of content, this is just awful.

I guess in the future it will be: buy the chapter, get eso+ for a month or two, then just do other stuff for the rest of the year.
Suddenly fallout 76 seems like a better game to be subbed to… Unbelievable.
