Come on now. Surely everyone expected the crashing and maintenance after this came out, right? Happens every time ESO brings out new content now, and has for about 2 years. I don't understand why they're fine with this being the norm now. Shouldn't they anticipate it and work out any bugs ahead of time? I mean, if your community even expects this, then ZoS should, too, and get better at new releases.

Hey, we completed the patch with lots of time to spare...

But it should have taken longer...

    Oh well, boot it up...

Hmm, I think we forgot a step...

We are now down for maintenance... :p

    This. Thanks for the laugh!

So players in Asian/Oceanic time zones lose a day of being able to play? What a surprise.

Ha ha, it was completely expected. I was talking to a friend in-game last night who told me she had today off and would be able to play the expansion, and my reply to her was basically, "Yeah, hopefully, if the server isn't down most of the day." We can only hope there won't be multiple other down-times today, but I'm not counting on it. :)

I returned to game about 2 months ago. Since has been nothing but false claims of their maintenance times. Have they ever stuck to a schedule?

So, while you won't have any of your NA stuff, you can always change region to EU and play now.

WEll, TBH, when they say the servers are coming down in 15 minutes - they're usually pretty close to hitting the mark.

You'd think ZOS would have gotten better at this over the years... I know bugs and errors can popup at the last minute, I've done scripting for mods and if there's just one comma or bracket out of place the whole thing is borked, but they have how many people in QA?

IDK why they dont just post a 12 hour downtime for major updates, then when it comes up early we feel blessed. At least we can plan around that.

I like the way FF14 does it, plan for the whole day to be down; 24 hours. Then when it comes up early, you just made your whole player-base happy.

Yeah. A lot of us don't even plan to play the day of release anymore for ESO. I would never take the first day of release off. I haven't planned to play it until Friday.

I didn't plan to play but when I downloaded the patch it appeared that we would be able to, hence the disappointment. Luckily I planned today to do some house cleaning and took the week off.

Maybe someone who knows more about these things can answer this because this does happen to all games on launch day.

Don't they have some server that they test it on to see what it screws up before going live? Or is it just that you cannot duplicate a server that has so many players on it?

I think what they need to do with maintenance announcements is to listen to Scotty.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xRqXYsksFg

Plan for the worst case, announce that for the time, and then if everything goes right, they look like they are getting done faster. And if not, they have already planned for it, and thus no need to adjust expectations after the fact.

I prefer the way GW2 does it, zero downtime... ever. Only real downtime the game has is when something goes wonky and has to go down for an hour or two, that has happened extremely infrequently. We get more downtime in this game each week for "routine" maintenance than i think GW2 has had the entire time it's been out and it came out nearly a year before this one.

Another epic fail for the ESO dev team. Since I started playing 3 or 4 months ago, every single scheduled maintenance has been late. Total lack of any accountability. Time to cancel my ESO Plus. That will probably be the only way to get them to live up to their promises - hit them in the wallet.

But then we would be playing GW2.... There is a reason that we are here instead of there.

True, I prefer that too, but GW2's infrastructure is set up to allow for actual hotfixing.

That would require a significant amount of paying customers to cancel, and I think ESO has enough whales that even then they wouldn't feel the hit.

I am confused, are you saying you prefer this game and because of that it can't possibly do what GW2 with the servers so that they never need to go down?

I never said to go play GW2, i said the way GW2 handles servers and maintenance is a million times better than virtually every single mmo (or really, any online game period) on the market and that the tech to make something liek that happen actually exists so there is no excuse for half a day routine maintenance other than incompetence.

True, I prefer that too, but GW2's infrastructure is set up to allow for actual hotfixing.

It is more than just hotfixing, they can release entire expansions without any downtime other than how long it takes someone to download the update.

I got on just enough time to grab Ember and was about to head to Isobel then the maintenance message popped up. I high tailed it out of there and did the Deshaan dolmens with Ember until it went down, got her to level 4 in those last 15 minutes. My biggest hope is they don't rollback the servers, it's not her level that troubles me its the fact I immediately threw on my best companion Epic gear on her and don't want to lose it.
