New form of pvp

New pvp idea. Read and let me know your thoughts.

So as you know coldharbor is a mirror realm of nirn( the entire map of tamriel for those that don’t know.)

So why not open a mirror version of cyrodil cold harbor themed. But...with a twist. It is a complete free for all. Large groups are disbanded (4 player limit groups. Specially for those who play ranks and healers to have some playability in this zone). Friendly fire activated to anyone not in your 4 man group. This would reduce zerging and add much more playability to single players and those who don’t wish to get involved in large scale pvp.

What would be the object of this camp? How about new titles? Ranks? Costumes dyes and coldharbor themed pvp furnishings. So bare with me. Just like cyrodil each player would be worth a certain amount of currency. My idea would be “souls” instead of ap. A separate currency that works the way telvar works. You kill players and you get souls. And just like telvar if you die you loose souls. Now. To prevent having to run back and forth to the bank every score evaluation period molag bals voice echos thru the map and absorbs your souls adding it to you “leaderboard” if you die before the half hour evaluation period you loose 10% of your souls each death. To avoid spawn camping when you die you get an extended invulnerable period that allows you to stealth up just like the invulnerable period when walking through doors in the city/ this gives you a chance to escape your killer unless you choose to engage them again.

Furthermore to add a bit of an objective rather than just wanton killing. The keeps shall be removed. And instead little mini keeps called towers (single flag outpost keeps with a couple npcs on the flag) will be added all over the map. ( say about as many as there are resource camps ) These towers when you own them give you a soul buff. Thus enabling you to advance on leaderboards if you so wish. To capture a tower you must break down the door and take the single pin to claim it as your own. The more towers you claim the more souls you can earn per kill ( LIMIT X4 MULTIPLIER) . And as you earn more souls molag bal will grace you with coldharbor themed ranks and titles for collecting souls for him.

And next A new rework to the coldharbor version of imp city. Each district is a semi safe zone with citizens of cold harbor but.....if you attack a player you gain a skull above your head. Yours souls are safe within the walls so dying here won’t impact your score. This skull is a blessing and a curse. You kill a player outside the city with the skull on your head you gain all of their souls. But if you die you loose all of yours. Thus creating a high risk high reward playstyle.

Souls could be used to buy much the same things as telvar. So materials, siege, armor, and furnishings and potions and food.

I think there are certain elements of this likely to get ZOS sued by Dark Souls for copyright infringement.

Otherwise, its just a larger, revamped Battlegrounds with Tel Var mechanics.

    Sounds fun.

But since it's a mirror, how about where they keeps are, pits of nothingness to be avoided at all costs. I'm just saying, I don't really mind if I never go to BRK again, ever. We can go fight over Cracked Wood Cave or something.

There are 3 distinct forms of PvP already: Cyrodil, IC, and BGs. 4 if you count dueling.

I'm wary of any further fragmentation, and would prefer changes and upgrades to existing systems.

OP has some good ideas. Some things that ZOS has trouble getting through their thick skulls:

    1) Players like free-for-alls and deathmatches.

    2) Players like to be rewarded when they win.

If ZOS can design simple gameplay around those two concepts, they will increase PvP engagement.

This would definitely add a different angle from the past 2 years and give long time veterans who have completed the long journey to make grand overlord a new challenge? Pve always gets new dungeons. But pvp gets very little evolution. There is no more progression in pvp except to go and farm the ranks on another toon. Where as pve players get their skins on all toons

Right? Its a giant 4v4v4v4v4v3v4v2v4v1v1 etc. Battlegrounds with Tel Var. (Because gaining souls when you kill enemies is Dark Souls)

Personally, I prefer Cyrodiil with its 1v1, 1vX, small scale, raid vs raid, faction stack vs faction stack, ganking, bombing, bridge farming, sieging glory. I understand that's not everyone's cup of tea. But since what I love most about Cyrodiil is the clash of organized raid vs organized raid, I don't have any interest in the OP's vision. Its not my scene at all.

classes like templar/DK are almost completely useless without an objective to defend, or a group to heal for templars case.

a free for all game mode means Its always beneficial to just get gankblades and gank everything to extiction, and you win. thats it.

So as you know coldharbor is a mirror realm of nirn( the entire map of tamriel for those that don’t know.)
Close, but not quite, as anyone who played through the coldharbour part will tell you! ;)
More like... coldharbour is a mockery of tamriel, a twisted, broken version slapped together of pirces stolen or copied from the mundus...
So why not open a mirror version of cyrodil cold harbor themed. But...
...but why even consider mainstroy-tied Molag Bals domain for this, when there are so many perfectly good oblivion planes around?
I am sure you could find several daedric princes who would enjoy setting aside part of their realm for battle to further their own amusement... I mean, Boetiah has groupy fun with Dragonstar Arena, and there is solo fun in Maelstrom arena, and we have group PvP with the Vvardenfell battlegrounds... so it would not be much of a stretch to add a larger region-sized oblivion-plane "battle area" for free-for-all PvP, yes? Boetiah could sponsor that one too, or Malacath, or even Mehunes Dagon, heck, Uncle Sheo might do it "just fer da lulz" if you give him half a reason... (or a quater reason with cheese)

...and making it a entirely seperate plane would mean the designers could do whatever they wanted with it - dependent on the daedric prince in question. heck, they could even make it a patchwork pocket dimension sponsored by ALL the daedric princes - have small interconnected regions themed to one prince each, for the groups to fight for control over... so one group could claim the "Coldharbour" region tower, and then fend off all attackers, while the next region might be seeing a three-way battle over the "Deadlands" tower, while some stealthers are ganking people in the "Spiral Skein" tower two regions over, yet the "Colored rooms" tower has gotten overlooked and is standing empty while the "Shivering Isles" twin towers (Mania and Dementia) are heavily fought over... you get the idea, right?
My idea would be “souls” instead of ap...
Not such a good idea considering the place of souls in the ESO story, and how player vestiges start out all soulless and stuff...
How about something tied to the approval of the sponsor of such arena?
Win a fight, gain "favor" with the daedric prince(s) watching, loose a fight, loose "favor", and whatever favor you can hold on to until you get back to your local deadric princes representative then can be exchanged for some boon - item or unlock, whatever. Naturally you cannot bank "favor" which would take care of the running back and forth - and to balance, you don't loose a huge chunk on defeat, just a smaller portion. And since a daedrics princes attention is fleeting... you loose favor over time, so there would be no sense sitting on your behind and boring your daedric overlord, but go out and fight, fight fight!

But at the same time large amounts of small groups clashing together for domination would be pretty epic. It wouldn’t just be a gank fest. Any group that can’t handle a single nb in open combat is pretty weak. I have nbs trying to gank me all the time and 98% of the time it ends with them dead. But at the same time small groups would be easier to coordinate and spread combat out over a greater area

Perhaps you would like to read the PvP section of a thread I wrote some days ago:

    "1) Optional Open World PvP:

Okay, calm down, guys. I’m trying to give a suggestion that would be OK for everyone, both PvP and PvE players. But, first of all, why did I mention it? Because I remember from my old school MMO days, the most FEAR I had while grinding, doing quests, world bosses, was not from AI, but from other players. It was the worst and at the same time the best feeling I had when I was about to complete something or was just there by my own and suddenly an assassin eager for blood comes from the shadows just to try to kill you and steal your loot or just for the pleasure of killing. This gives ADRENALINE and makes the fantasy world feels more immersive. Names rise from this system. The (bad) fame that comes with them. Guilds would be born. Guilds to kill and guilds to protect. IN MY OPINION, (pls, don’t be harsh, it’s just an opinion) this would re-invent ESO’s PvP and give fresh air to a kind-of-boring PvP system we have nowadays. BUT WAIT, I didn’t explain how it would work. Please, stay with me.
The system would work like this: for those who want to PvP against other players while doing quests or World Bosses, you would just have to flag your character for PvP Mode and now you're able to hurt/kill other players also flagged for PvP If you don't want to take part in Open World PvP, just let your character unflagged and nothing will ever happen to you. A flagged character for PvP would have a different name color depending on it’s stats:

White – The player is flagged for PvP. He’s able to hurt/kill other players and he’s able to being hurt/murdered by other players. He’s in passive mode, but he has to pay attention to the environment around him, as anyone could make a move anytime. If he’s killed he drops a little bit of gold and has a very small chance to drop a piece of gear.

Pink – The player has just hit someone. He’s not more in passive mode. If he dies while his name is pink color he loses a little bit more of gold and has a small chance to drop a piece of gear. If he kills a white-named player, he turns into a light red-named player. If he kills another pink player his name stays pink for a while until it gets white again. If he doesn’t attack anyone he’s name eventually will turn into white again.

Light Red – This player has just killed another player, which was a passive mode one. He’s a murderer. If he dies, he loses a medium quantity of gold and has a medium chance to drop a piece of gear. If he continues to kill other players, he’s name will turn into Dark Red. If he stops to kill people, he’s name will turn eventually into white again.

Dark Red – This player is on a killing spree. He doesn’t measure his consequences. If he dies, he loses a great amount of gold and has a big chance of losing a piece of gear. If he continues his killing spree he may become a Black Named player. If he stops the killing spree, his name will gradually changes to Light Red and then, White.

Black (still doesn’t know if I’m okay with this, never seen it in any other MMO) – This player is son of Molag Bal, I dk, even Molag Ball is afraid of him. He’s pure evil. If he dies he loses a huge amount of gold and loses a piece of his gear. If he continues to murder other players, his name will still be black. If he stops killing other players, his name won’t go back to Dark Red anymore. For his name go back to Dark Red he must be killed by another player.

That was the color system of Optional PvP.

BUT WHAT THE HELL MAN, I DON’T WANT TO PVP, GO AWAY.

Okay, it’s allright. For PvE players we have the Unflagged Mode.

All players Unflagged for PvP have Blue Name. The Blue Name protects yourlsef from other players and protect other players from you. You’ll not be able to hurt/kill anyone. Others will not be able to hurt/kill you as well. The game will live on as it always have been for you. You won’t take any disadvantage in relation to other players.

If an unflagged character for PvP (so, protected by Blue Name) turns into a flagged character, he will not be able to turn again to Unflagged Mode until 30 minutes have passed. If a flagged character turns into a unflagged one, he will have to wait for 1 day to turn to PvP mode again.

Optional PvP Zones would be all Zones of the Map of the entire Game, excluding big towns such as Daggerfall, Vulkhel Guard, etc… If you try to enter those towns while you have Pink, Light Red, Dark Red or Black Name, the guards will attack you and will have a Buff of 100% attack power. Interactions with NPCs will be normal even if you had a coloured name.

    2) Cyrodiil as a Weekend Event:

Most of you guys may be already hating me for that. I’ll explain. ESO, in my point of view, is a game focused on PvE and ZOS invested THE MOST on PvE, besides the fact the original trailer for ESO is entirely about PvP, the Alliance War. In a thread created by some reddit user a while ago, he asked if people liked ESO’s PvP the way it is. The majority said yes, it’s good. Less people, but even a significant number said yes, but it could be better and there was this guy who said they should add a new PvP zone.
Okay, so let’s be real. PvP in ESO has a name and it’s name is Cyrodiil. I know that there are a lot of people who don’t like to PvP, but I’ve passed 99% of the time PvEing in order to get to PvP. When I got to Cyrodiil the first time, I went crazy. Huge zergs, war, capturing towers, sieges, spells flying over our heads, the first few hours were amazing. BUT, the time passed and I went to Cyrodiil a few other times and then I began to ask myself: why? Not why, but for what are we fighting for? What’s the meaning of all this? I mean, even if the Alliance wins the war, what are the benefits for the winner’s population? Not even a buff.
Once I played a game called Rising Force Online, that I was quite expecting ESO to be like, because the game also had 3 different races fighting a war for mineral resources in a campaign of exploration of a newly discovered world. What I learned from RF is that for a PvP War Campaign have meaning, you have to determine consequences for the losers and for the winners and by doing that, players will have this one thing to fight for and engage into battle, instead of only going to PvP “just to kill random people and t-bag them”. In that specific game, the Nation that won the war (that was a weekend event) had the authority to it’s population FARM the war zone’s minerals and that was a HUGE bonus for that race’s economy. And the other races couldn’t by any chance enter the farming zone because of the losers’s restriction. The winners were able to farm the entire week until the next weekend War Event started again. So, everyone wanted to get strong to help fighting the war. It had a meaning, afterall!
What is my suggestion? To adapt Cyrodiil as a weekend event. When you limits players from entering Cyrodiil all the times they want, when they finally get the chance to enter it, they’ll do without hesitation. Even a PvE person that wants to explore Cyrodiil while it’s not at war times would be there to help it’s Alliance to end the war for the zone’s resources. People would be crazy about which nation would be the winner because it would result in a entire week being able to collect tons and tons of new skyshards and explore new delves without the risk of PvP. Also, they would have Imperial City entirely for them. THIS promotes PvP Campaign. This is what people would fight for. This would have meaning.

Other thing I wanted to talk about this topic, is that the ESO marketing also focused a lot during it’s launch at 2014 on the Emperor’s figure. For you to become an Emperor it’s a serious difficult task in most of the cases, but I’m not criticizing that! I agree that to become an emperor you have to push yourself to your limits, but why not doing that by joining a 3 days campaign instead of a 7 long days campaign? By changing Cyrodiil into a Weekend Event, Emperors would be crowned right after the end of the event, by Sunday’s night. After being crowned, the emperor would emanate a Light Aura emote that everyone who he passes by would recognize him as the emperor and would be grateful for his campaign that resulted for resources for his people."

In a PvE-centric game like ESO, diverting scarce developer resources to open/free-for-all PvP would be a complete waste, there wouldn't be enough players interested in it to make it worthwhile, and even if there were it would then decimate PvP for those who preferred the present systems (as well as diverting those developer resources away from the core game).

There's nothing wrong with basing the right kind of niche game on open/free-for-all PvP, but this isn't that kind of game.
