@doggie What the hell are you smoking?

Let me educate you, since i was born in Germany and spent the first 30 years of my life there.

    - Everyone(!), starting in the early '60s, has to learn English in school. It is mandatory!

    - Anyone(!) who moves on to highschool has to pick a 2nd language (of your choice)

That's a minimum of 3 languages (if you count native German) for most of the people 55 or younger. They might not be fluent in all of them but at least they had several years of exposure to those languages in school.
    ;-)

Ah... that explains the monitoring of posts in all three languages.

Obviously, we don't do the same here in the States, or teach Geography and History. ;)

As a Dutch player I am happy I have the option to play on the US megaserver, I kinda like the fact that I can understand everyone is saying.

Tried playing on the European server, but way too many languages I don't speak. Not that I really fit in with the USA mindset all the time (very militaristic compared to the Dutch for example), but it's not something that is annoying. Being unable to understand the language is.

There are just too many languages in Europe to split them up into mega- or should I say mini-servers.

Yea this 3 language crap is really annoying... we even get server messages in 3 languages its like the tower of Babel...

You should maybe restrict the non english server messages for people who have German/French selected as main language and are playing in that language.

And for the love of pie please enforce english only in General Chat... there are MANY countries in the EU and Europe, if we all start to use our native language for the hell of it or pride then the General Chat will die...

Its stupid to let them speak in French, German or whatever other language they use when 90% of the people there don`t understand what is being said.

Zone - English and just Zone should be just one channel named Zone that is English only.

I haven't noticed any language issues on the NA server, and I was phased with a good amount of Québécois at launch as I was playing in French.

I'm surprised it would be an issue on the EU megaserver. I just imagined that Europeans would be pretty used to interacting with foreigners who speak different languages since the countries there are all relatively small.

Please stop making us look stupid. English is not the only language in the US. It's not even the oldest language in the US. Many of us in Louisiana speak French and it was the major language of the state both long before and long after it became part of the country, up until it was beat out of people in school starting in the '40s.

Besides, ZoS has clearly marketed the game towards a multilingual, international community... meaning the internet.

Hmm, i dont have seen many insults, mostly everyone agrees to talk english. I still prefer a mixed server, i like to play with guys from spain, norway, denmark, UK, france, germany etc !

Lol, even the English don't expect everyone to speak English, I don't. As for everyone playing nicely, it depends who's playing.

Some people stir up racist just by walking into the room, other do their best to calm everything down. (Note I live near Liverpool, where "calm down" is fighting talk.)(No, I'm not joking, just in case you've never visited Liverpool).

Add to the mix nearly two thousand years of insults, wars, politics and worse actually visiting other countries (you either understand that one or not, won't explain it). And European tempers can be lost very easily.

All you can do is try to keep the peace, and hope people get it out of their system.

If all the countries mix most players will eventually learn English, since that the most used language. That atleast happend in AoC. The language barrier used to be a problem and then the players slowly learned English. Then the hate towards certain countries were reduced.

Just three? Sounds more like a toddler's first tower of Babel.

I'm fine on the EU server. Like I said many times in the past, foreign languages don't bother me in the slightest. About jerks in the zone chat? People always find something to argue about, no matter what language they speak.

I just wish the announcements and patch notes on the forum were segregated by language...

In the USA English is pretty much the official language, while contrary to what those dictators in Brussels want us to believe, Europe is divided strongly between languages and cultures, only a tiny minority considers him-/herself European.

They consider themselves Dutch, German, French, etc, but not European. The politicians are working hard on forcing us into an undemocratic European Union, taking away the sovereign power of the nation states and pretend to represent Europe as a whole, but fact is that the vast majority of European citizens see their own language, culture and countries as far more important than the pipe-dream called the European Union.

So mainly in countries like Germany and France they often refuse to speak English. Even the politicians in the European Union need translators to speak to each other. So when even those that want Europe to become one single state refuse to speak the same language, it is not a surprise that gamers don't either.

What benefit would most of the countries have to becoming a single state?

For example what benefit would Germany have to pick up Greece's slack? Why would the strong countries want to become united with the weaker ones (Economically).

I know your joking, but just remember that not all only English speaking people are so ignorant. Although it would seem only English speaking people are so full of themselves that they expect everyone to bow down to them and do exactly as they say.

Unlike other countries, English people do not have to learn another languages, other than a three year period from ages 11-14. These classes are usually just a waste of time too. My school did French and German, so I opted for German but two lesson a week for three years really didn't teach me that much.

No country would benefit, the select few powerful individuals that are forcing us into it however will make sure they will benefit enormously gaining both power and wealth while stripping away the little power the people have and making the inhabitants poorer.

edit: anyway, enough about politics, this is about a game server. :)

@fyendiarb16_ESO Well, yeah, of course I only meant that people would be accustomed to a multilingual atmosphere, not that they'd see the continent as more important than their home countries.

Then again, I've heard more about these types of problems with those who have to most directly work within multiple languages due to both being prominent within a single community. For instance, French and Dutch in Brussels, French and German in Switzerland, Catalan and Spanish in Catalonia, etc. So, I dunno.

(I'm actually going to Brussels for a bit this summer and was told to just speak English because people will hate you if you speak French.)
