MMOs are DEAD! RIP 5/30/2014

Being a long time gamer, I have seen the whole birth to death cycle of the MMO. Its was a good run, but I can officially say that MMOs are dead.

why?
#1. gold sellers and spammers - the low lifes that cant find any other way to make $$, so they destroy our games.

#2. hacking noobs and skill less wonders who create hacks for games. I was amazed to find a hacking group today for teso, that actually called themselves, "advanced gamers." - sorry but news flash to you, if you need hacks to play a game you are just a skill-less nub.

#3. games that offer all controls in the client, with no anti cheating code. I mean its no secret that people hack games, its been going on since diablo and ascheron's call, but yet game companies still have zero clue or cares to combat this?

So I just wanted to mark this day as the official end of the mmo, because there is no end in site for the skill less wonders who need hacks to play combined with the skill less companies that continue to waste money developing games that cater to these low life scrubs.

ESO was fun while it lasted, I got my entertainment value from it, but its clear the only direction this game is taking is down. You can criticize me all you want, but mark my words and watch and see. Without major over halls, that will not be made, this is just going to be another hacker paradise piece of garbage, as we are starting to see.

ESO is my first MMO so I hope you're wrong. I've played it quite a bit. I'm VR4 on my Nightblade and I still have a whole alliance zone to explore. I've reached Tyro grade 2 rank in PvP and I'm enjoying PvP more and more. I think it comes down to people's attitude towards bugs and hacks. For me, hacks are a non issue. They don't affect my gameplay in the slightest. I get the occasional gold spam mail but that's about it.

I try to concentrate on the character I'm playing. The bugs are the only thing that can sometimes get me down. The Nightblade is pretty broken but I try to adapt to the situation. I wouldn't say I'm useless in PvP for example but I have to pick my battles and I die a lot. That's just part of the game.

You are aware that Dead in the Water doesn't mean dead, it just means you aren't moving. As in Dead Stop, both are nautical terms.

Not that I think MMOs are dead just yet, not very well, but not dead. Eventually they will come up with measures that will counter 99.9% of the bots. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but someday and for the rest of your life.

The mmo genre isn't dead. Just not growing as fast. This means new mmos will have to steal players from other mmos to grow really big, really fast. It means that current mmos will have to fend off other mmos trying to steal their customers.

ESO isn't the only MMO I have ever played (or currently play for that matter --I have an active WoW sub and I had an active EVE sub until very recently). In the past I've played others. I've seen the bots in this game.

You're absolutely full of it (and yourself) to pronounce an entire genre completely dead based on what's going on in this game.

I agree with almost everything you said, except the main point, I think there will be enough cheaters and fools playing (that) MMOs, keeping the cycle alive and feeding most of them.

    MMOs are not dead.
It's just that those wall-street-game-companys are trying to gather everyone... when it's obvious for many reasons that MMOs are supposed to be niche games...

ESO is the perfect exemple. They are going in every directions in order to please the biggest crowd possible... and we know the result...

Was it naive idelasim or Marketing talk ? I can't say, I'm not behind the scene...
If the former well... to bad and good luck fixing it... but I'd tend to believe it's the later.
ESO, the great nothing : no PvE difficulty, PvP lags, zero RP tools...

So, if it's already dead, stop beating it ;) .

About the game client comprising many controls, it is true that it makes botting and hacking easier, but it also makes modding (add-ons for instance) easier and even just possible.
If you put all controls server-side, of course you will make it harder for the hackers (but not impossible, they are smart). Unfortunately, most of all, you will make the game more painful and less comfortable for genuine not cheating players as you will restrain their gameplay capabilities.

For instance, FF XIV v1.0 had all controls server-side: result was an incredibly laggy UI that made the game hardly enjoyable to play. Final result: FF XIV v1.0 failure and development of FF XIV v2.0 ARR with UI controls client side.

Guys! Believe me or not, I just came back from the future! It's true!

In 2063, @true2moon_ESO‌ is known as a great prophet, for he successfully predicted many things, like the "End Of All Bacon" and the world-wide turn to veganism in 2032. Or the global collapse of the internet in 2054, making RFC1149 (IP over avian carriers) finally get the attention it has always deserved.

So please don't bash him, he's just another "concerned customer" who's natural way to cope with personal disappointment is to blow it way out of proportion and spread it as far as possible in public, in order to seek some attention and consolation in his misery.

He is right in a way. MMOs won't die fast, but they will. Imho more potential would be creating open world FPS game. Oh wait, it would actualy be better with 3rd person view shooter like ghost recon etc. In this way actualy the Division is going to explore this new area of gaming. We shall see if that will work. But I must say UBI failed me only with Rainbow Six. I hated them so much for killing the best shooter ever made.

But the Assassin's Creed made me love that company. I love story driven games and in this AC is a jewel.

MMOs are played by causal players, so must make decisions how to keep decent difficulty (pretty well done in ESO!) and they must make PvP more or less like counter strike match - your skills and thinking has to be key, not your level or shining armor you grinded for half a year. Grinding days are gone - nobody wants that these days. I am too old to spend tons of time grinding myself.

have to agree with the premise but not the reasons. a few mmos are still going strong despite heavy hacking and botting for years. I think rather the whole idea of a slow build to skills and end game is becoming a niche market, with the majority of new gamers wanting to have the 'end game' at once and all that entails, like raiding, pvp and other instant gratification gaming styles.

games seem to be more successful if they cater to the idea of a project earning few years of sales, with moving off their devs and artists to other projects and leaving marketing and skeleton crews to keep the game going till its closed. cant blame them, they are just trying to stay alive and be profitable.

but i do have to put out there that this is the worst community I have ever played with, the few nice people i have met and made friends with are overwhelmed by the exploiting worthless slobs at the top of leaderboards and pvp ranks. other players are making me leave eso, not the game play in the end

I find the OP statment veru truthfull. This genre has changed a lot in past years and has nothing to offer more. MMO'S in the beggining were a spectacular way of playing with your friends, enjoy an always online environment, a persitant world that keeps to evolve when you log off.
For those who find this post ridiculous or strange: you were probably not even born or you [snip] in your pyjamas while we "older gamers" were having so much fun with MMO's.

The MMO's were once not meant for mass public, not in WoW terms. MMO's didnt aim to satisfy everyone, they offered their unique story and virtual world. The Dev's had a vision of how their game would look in future.

Nowadays all i see is software houses trying to earn the cash as much as Blizzard did. The market is open to everykind of man/woman/child who come to cry on forums, say they will not pay if they dont get that uber looking set or armor or pet RAIT NAOOO.

MMO's are not for everyone and i wish devs could understand that and had smaller goals rather than trying to make "the best earning game of all times".

The meaning of the acronym has changed from being a massive multiplayer online roll playing game to singleplay with massive multi connection.

So sorry but yes, if not already dead, the old genre of MMO's as we knew it, is dieing.

Precisely ! Gone are the days when games like WoW ruled for a decade. We will never see games break and hold records like it did. There are too many MMOs on the market and to be honest too many bad, rushed, over hyped ones !

Choice is a good thing, unless... you're an MMO company. They need to rush out their games, regain all their money and desperately try to hold on to their player base. Unfortunately by then its too late as the next 'big thing' is already being advertised and players are looking away.

Any game will have a certain amount of die-hard players/fanboys and unless you're game is super niche like EVE Online (for example) you are never going to hold a massive playerbase for very long.

MMOs aren't dead, but each new MMO now only has a finite life !

Judging from the content offered in most all new MMOs, I can only assume the developers are shooting for a 4-6 mo. lifecycle.

A bunch of singleplayer type quests that take a month or so, maybe some pvp and basic crafting. Boom: MMO.

The games that held a lot of subs for a long time offered a lot more diversions and things to keep you drawn in and added features that made you feel like you had an investment in the PC.

Back when I was but a lowly Army captain, was playing the original Diablo online, out at Fort Leavenworth.

Within the game, some cat came by and invited me to accompany him to a dungeon. At the end of clearing the dungeon, suddenly my character fell dead, and the other cat wrote, "Ha ha got your ear!"

I was livid, and that turned me off to online gaming until Star Wars Battlefront II.

You'd think developers would have found a more effective means of preventing hacks since then.
