    OP Brian, you're Brian!!
Nice try at attention grabbing headlines, but you aren't working for MSN. I suggest with that level of dyslexia, self-opinionated (lol I spieled that wrong 2!!)certainty, limited grasp of euphemisms, anachronisms, lexical ability and absolute belief in yourself (or as you would write your self) you'll go far. (That was an apostrophe incidentally). Politician, banker, arms dealer, dealer. Estate agent, landlord, internet start up. The world is your metaphorical oyster. Stop playing MMOs immediately and strike out into this brave new world. Please. :#

Cheaters will cheat. If there is a market to make money off of someone elses hard work it will happen

A lot of games are going to the Google authenticator to try to combat the bots and gold sellers and to help prevent your account from being stolen.

Unfortunately it will just be a matter of time before the cheaters find a way around that too.

It does seem like MMOs may be on the way out, unfortunately: Predicting The Biggest Video Game Disaster Of 2014: The Elder Scrolls Online (Forbes article)

The only shame in that article is Paul Tassi still being allowed to call himself a journalist.

    Ad hominem response incoming...

I'll put money down that he doesn't even play MMOs.

He's also listed as a "contributor". As a person who makes his living writing, I can tell you exactly what that means: He a freelancer, submitted his article to Forbes, they needed filler and shot him $100 for the piece.

    From the quoted article:
The series has first and foremost always been the quintessential single player game. You, the hero, explore a vast countryside, taking on quests and saving the day. I don’t think many players ever stopped and thought “This would be so much better with 50 other versions of me running around with names above their heads.”

In short, Bethesda and Zenimax spend an ungodly amount of money developing a game for an audience that may not even exist.
    Food for thought.

There has been hackers and cheaters since UO. Without blocking an entire nation (China) you will not get rid of 99% of the MMO plague. Your Asian market is the largest player base most MMO have. Look at WoW, their NA subscription is down to almost nothing while their Asian players makes up 90% of their player base, alright maybe not 90% but it is still up there.

Do you really think ZOS or any other MMO is going to get rid of such a high player base? Not on your life.

Lets face facts companies spend tens of millions to hundreds of millions a year to protect their and the companies customers assets from hackers. Wal-Mart, Target, Sears, Bank of America, and the list goes on, all spend tens to hundreds of millions on internet security each year. These companies have real assets to protect.

Now lets look at Target, they got hit by hackers where millions of their customers information got hacked. Target is suffering 40% loss in profits just from last Nov. To end of Dec. last year because of the breach. I don't even know what their current profit loss is for this year, but I know they are hurting. There was couple other major stores that got hacked besides Target.

These very same stores sealed the security breach in the matter of days.

Do you not think ZOS or any other company that provides online gaming would not have such internet security if the assets players had in game was real assets? Of course they would. But the fact is, who really gives a crap about some assets in a game that isn't even real.

ZOS knows full well that if enough paying subscribers gets tired of the BS and leaves they can go Free to Play and make even more money than paying subscribers are paying. So they have no need to provide real internet security for the game.

Now as for the players billing information, you better believe they have better internet security than what is provided for the game.

MMO's are not dead, but lacking in what the customer wants. The peeps behind MMO's just don't seem to listen to what the public wants. Kinda like our politicians.

Meaningful endgame content, in-depth crafting exp., NO pay-to-win, great dialogue, RP/PVP/PVE servers, Goal oriented PVP with rewards (DAOC style), PVE content with a sense of character immersion, Fear...no fear in today's games. You die, oh well..wayshrine and a few gold, no bigge. Player housing, Guild housing, A in-depth settings menu..such as toggle names on/off, or chat bubbles. A reward based group finder..and dungeons that you would want to run multiple times. A class quest that takes time/money/friends to complete. A invested community that will engage others. A auction house with a robust economy..hell, I would take EC tunnel from EQ1 over the guild stores that we have currently. And lastly, BOT free as possible..with a customer service base that actually cares about their customers...I get more satisfaction from Subway that I do from ZOS.

ArcheAge is going to be an interesting test bed. With plentiful open world mobs and a farming system that could be easily botted it seems wide open for exploitation. But they are working on their hacking protection even at the alpha stage.

It just wouldn't surprise me if it got hit real bad though.

MMOs are not dead. There are millions of paying subscribers out there. Unfortunately, "MMO" is becoming a dirty word, though. There are many gamers that will not consider playing one because "MMO" has come to mean "a very buggy game that requires many long hours of tedious grinding to get anywhere" and throw in gold-spammers and bots for good measure.

WoW hit record-high subscriber numbers because it pulled in a lot (millions) of players who had never played an MMO before and even a lot of complete non-gamers. As its subscribers drop off, I think we will see overall shrinkage of the MMO market because post-WoW games are not giving these non-MMOers a reason to be attracted to them. ESO still has some opportunity here.

About #1 .. It's really a problem with Visa/ Mastercard security. Bots get access to the game with stolen cards. Why don't the cards check out as stolen, or require more security than whatever is on the card?

Here in Norway we have to type in a code from a codebox to buy inland, but once we buy something outside the country there's no security whatsoever.

The shops here in Norway actually complain because 40% of the sales who go to the code check is aborted(I don't think they realise that this could be because the card is stolen and the security stop them). But some sales probably end becuase people don't have the code box with them.

Good thing to come from the Ukraine war is that Russia is going to create a new Card service so maybe we can actually get a card with security. Because a card without security isn't going to last long in Russia.. Just saying.

Let's just realize one very important thing here. How many active subs does this game currently have not counting the 100s of bots!? The population in game seems to be decreasing little by little and ZOS never released how many copies were sold. I believe any company likes to brag about their success story so why hasn't ZOS bragged? Even though they are a private company why aren't they bragging?

Being a long time gamer, I have seen the whole birth to death cycle of the MMO. Its was a good run, but I can officially say that MMOs are dead.

    why?
#1. gold sellers and spammers - the low lifes that cant find any other way to make $$, so they destroy our games.

#2. hacking noobs and skill less wonders who create hacks for games. I was amazed to find a hacking group today for teso, that actually called themselves, "advanced gamers." - sorry but news flash to you, if you need hacks to play a game you are just a skill-less nub.

#3. games that offer all controls in the client, with no anti cheating code. I mean its no secret that people hack games, its been going on since diablo and ascheron's call, but yet game companies still have zero clue or cares to combat this?

So I just wanted to mark this day as the official end of the mmo, because there is no end in site for the skill less wonders who need hacks to play combined with the skill less companies that continue to waste money developing games that cater to these low life scrubs.

ESO was fun while it lasted, I got my entertainment value from it, but its clear the only direction this game is taking is down. You can criticize me all you want, but mark my words and watch and see. Without major over halls, that will not be made, this is just going to be another hacker paradise piece of garbage, as we are starting to see.

I hope you are wrong. My favorite genre of game is the mmo.

Oh no MMOs must be dead because some pointless nobody on a forum said so...

Numbers don't lie and MMO's are far from dead. Do you also think Cars are dead? What with all the car thieves around.

The point is where ever there is money their will be thieves trying to steal some of that money. Don't let it bother you, hard if you are a direct victim, but just get on with it, don't let them get you down. An advantage with a game like ESO is that it's all digital. If you get robbed, ESO will give back what was robbed, now take a look at Neverwinter.

I think they are progressing with dealing with these issues well enough. Only time will tell.

    Well we know you're over 35 :).

    Seriously though...

I don't think MMO's are dead, I just think they're going to take up residence on consoles more than PC's. It's a little harder to hack PS4's and Xbox One's (at least I think it is). Plus you don't have to worry about video cards and fps issues.

The mmo genre isn't dead. Just not growing as fast. This means new mmos will have to steal players from other mmos to grow really big, really fast. It means that current mmos will have to fend off other mmos trying to steal their customers.

Ha sorry , but from what I hear a recently just released game from another company has beaten them to that title hands down.

Bots and spammers will eventually fade away as the game (and hopefully the players) mature.

From what I've been reading, Everquest Next seems to be a tool for building environments, buildings and vehicles (like longships), rather than a game itself.

I am very glad that the old MMO is dead. Remember getting whacked in UO and having to try to get to your body to get your stuff back? If you got killed the first time how were you supposed to be able to get it naked? I do not miss the constant PvP either. Nor do I wax nostalgic for the hours wasted with groups and raids waiting for this one to bio, that one to deal with family agro, etc. ESO meets some of my gaming needs. In some ways it is like a subscription based stand alone ES game. I like that. I really have been enjoying the ability to informally weave in and out of groups type settings. I have had random people save my skin on occasion and I have enjoyed snatching other players from the jaws of daedric death. I have many ways of leveling and developing my characters, which is one of my favorite aspects of RPGs.

The old MMO is dead! Long live the new MMO!

I see all the naysayers come and go but in the Ops case I agree.

For different reasons though. MMOs started out by companies wanting to reach bigger audiences and using a business model for themselves to gain stability in sells and production. EQ, DAoC, UO and a few others paved the way for MMOs and Blizzard, admittedly, pulled ideas from all of the formers mmos to make the most successful model to date. I did NOT state Blizz made the best, that is personal opinion.

Companies went from putting out quality products and maintaining those products to todays cash in models. Companies use micro transactions and hype to move their product. Many , like swtor, are happy to cash in up front for profit and leave customers or would be players with a bitter taste in the aftermath of their decisions.

In this instance though, we just have a game with no sustainable life at all. It was a good effort. MMOs are not dead, there will always be the hardcore fans and game jumpers that keep purchasing every new big thing. Overall though gaming companies should go back to single player console games and stop trying to sell their mediocre deadline driven games into the MMO market.
