Does anyone here enjoy leveling?

j.frank.nicholsb14_ESO
It seems from the posts that maybe I am playing the wrong game. I thought I was playing Elders Scrolls. Elders Scrolls to me has always been the RPG and questing king of the hill.

However, it seems that people here would be happier if they could just buy a level 50 toon fully tricked out with the best equipment and skills from ZOS.

I have seen the first 15 levels called "tedious" and how horrible it is to have to spend 8 to 10 HOURS (not days) grinding through them.

My wife and I have been playing since early access (and betas before that) and at this point have 14 to 16 toons each (depending on the day of the week) none of which are over 14 yet. And we are loving the game.

Are we alone?

I'm veteran rank 5 in a veteran rank 3 zone and I could easily go run with guildies in craglorn, and I do occasionally but I enjoy the quests.
Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

I say your not alone. The quests in this game are VERY engaging. Some are quick and to the point while others are longer and have moral choices at the end.

When I can get the PVP to work and find a group to tag along with the PVP is VERY enjoyable. At level 20 I felt I was still contributing to the group DPS and Healing even a little CC.

Just running around and exploring in this game is amazing and has a point theres endless nodes to find for crafting and treasure chests, books, sky shards.

The ONLY thing that MIGHT drag me away from this game would be EQNext when that game is released. Though that game could learn a LOT from this one as I find the combat here extremely enjoyable, but I will wait and see how it turns out.

Questing & leveling is fine. My only disappointment as how similar a lot of quests are on the different alliance maps; as you find out when going through veteran stages or having alts on all three alliances. A bit more diversity would have gone a long way.

I never "level". I play and so far havnt had a single boring moment.

If you dont know much about The Elderscrolls world, then in short. Leveling is one of many goals/activity you can choose to do.

I get exp automatic when I do fun stuff.

If you only want to level to max level, then maybe you will be a bit annoyed that the roadmap for ESO states increases in level type of exp. Not very often, but if the goal is only to be highest level, then you are only experiencing a very small part of the game.

I cant tell you what to do, but the core of ESO is there is nothing called "the wrong" thing. As much as possible is open for you to choose to do, pick, whatever.

Before you quit, may I suggest you go traveling and exploring a bit?
Or did you use the skyshard addon and best exp quest map addon?

If not, only hunting skyshards is one of my favorite things to do. But sometimes when I look for em, it can take 2 hours and I find one, or nothing.

Do you have guild friends? try doing some grouping. From what I heaard, the new zone dungeons are REALLY fun. Hard as hell and every small mistake can lead to a wipe. Lots to figure out there.

I hope you find some of the over 50 main things you can do outside of "leveling". and most of em grants exp. I never level...I just pop...oh, lvled. Didnt even noticed!

I would say the questing in this game is not as bad as many make it out to be, its the bugs that plague the game that frustrates me, then again some would say: "It's not an Elder Scrolls game without the bugs."

    @ the OP

I was one of those crazies in FFXI that ACTUALLY liked the leveling process(sans merits...) and the same is true for ZOS.

My only gripe is how they handled VR leveling. I wish ZOS had flat opened up the map, redone how mobs scaled up in VR zones depending on which zones you chose to visit first. and come up with a better frame-story than the Cadwell's stuff.

As others have said, you and your wife are most certainly not alone in this.

I enjoy exploring the world and working through each map, until I've seen and done all it has to offer.

That said, I also enjoy the growth and development (both horizontal and vertical) of my character in terms of new skills, synergies and abilities.

I like the stories and the feeling of purpose, though, tbh, some of the options can feel a bit (or sometimes very) forced..

I have no need to get to max level or indeed to be the 'best' at the game, though I'll admit freely that some level of perceived competition between players is part of my drive. - That is, I enjoy when I manage to overcome hard and challenging content, that others find difficult. (It's even better, if I'm part of a group managing that). I am never condescending towards others, nor do I act superior (to my knowledge.) It just feels nice to achieve something difficult.
    - And then be able to pass on advice and see others achieving the same.

But yes, above all, I enjoy the journey.. The goal is, by its very definition, the end of said journey and I have no need to get there anytime soon.

Leveling a character is what I enjoy the most from an RPG. I am creating it. I am making it my own. I have all 8 of my character slots filled with toons of different races, genders, factions, crafts, and classes just so I can go slow and enjoy that process. None is higher than 34. I never have a lack of new content this way either. If I were just interested in running around killing stuff I would have bought a shooter.

To me it's all about the story, the journey. I am in no rush to get to "endgame" whatever that is. I like exploring, and crafting, and just having a good time with my friends in the game. If I am playing with someone who just rushes through everything in the game, then I have no problem saying, "goodbye, go on ahead". /wave  I'm not an energy drink swillin' sugar-rush kid trying to beat the game as fast as possible.

I like finding the crafting camps with special worktables that let you make special items. Thats fun to me. The beauty of elder scrolls games is different kinds of players play for different reasons and different goals. No one person has the right to say that their way of playing is the best, or the only way.

People? To most is the journey, who you thinking of are the classic and exclusive PvPers, who are the most aggressive sorts and the ones that will whine the most here about having to go 'through' PvE to 'get to' PvP. Same nonsense, same stupidity, same clash of 'cultures' and mentality as has been the last 20 years in every MMOs.

That's the thing Skyrim, Obilivion it wasn't miles of running around with a mob less area until you got to were the quest mob is, kill those run through the empty spots to the next quest mob area etc etc etc.

Skyrim I get to 60 then fight Audiwen or however its spelled, epic fight at 60 then reroll something else, have done this 10-15 times and still find stuff in that game I didn't know was there

1-15 thats my experience yours might be different but thats mine. The most boring 15 levels in MMO history to me

    yes,
I enjoy leveling. I enjoy the slow allotment of points for skills and attributes and the contemplation of how to build my char.

I would never buy a full end game char but dont have a problem with those that want to for pvp, in fact, I believe allowing this would eliminate a huge percentage of the exploiting, botting and cheating going on now. meh, maybe not as then they would want to buy the epic gear asap as well and that takes gold farmed mats and gold. nvm. i give up lol

I've heard a few people say that, though I tend to disagree. How do you find ESO to be inferior?

One key area where I have found it inferior so far is in the solo dungeons - a lot less of them and a lot less elaborate than Skyrim - but I may not have fully discovered the dungeon locations

So I'm with the OP; I like to questing and exploration aspects. I will say though that one disappointment is that there are less lootable items than in Skyrim (where you could basically pick up anything and search anything) e.g. Coming across a skeleton with a weapon and armour and not being able to loot it, or weapon racks that are 'static' and non-searchable.

I only play for the journey. In all the other MMOs that I've played, my guys pretty much get shelved once they hit level cap.

    I agree 100% with this.

Once I hit the level cap and 'beat the game' as many people tend to say, especially when it comes to Skyrim and the other Elder Scrolls games, then my characters are essentially dead.

I enjoy the journey, I love the exploration and I'm in it for the adventure.

As a general remark, it seems to me that a lot of people in the past years after MMO's have become completely mainstream, are no longer understanding that they are playing a role playing game. RPG's have always been about the adventure, dungeons and quests.

If you want a game without quests, without the 'hassle' of leveling up and you just want to go nuke things then I think the FPS genre, and not the RPG one, is the correct games to play.

Sure, you could argue that someone might be more interested in swords, axes and general melee rather than shooting people with machineguns and rifles. Then again, there are plenty games that offer that 'no quests involved' type of PvP experience, such as; War of the Roses, Chivalry, War of the Vikings to mention a few.

    My question has always been;

If you don't like questing and you dislike the 'grind' necessary to reach level cap... why are you playing an MMORPG?

Questing was interesting at first but now its just plain boring, especially if you prefer one faction and level more than one character in it.Leveling process is too slow especially if you choose to listen to all conversations. For me fun in RPG comes from progressing your character and exploring different play styles and specs. While there is diversity in that regard in ESO it is left neglected because of slow leveling and high respec costs which is very offputing for me.Questing is good and well for people who like that sort of play style, but there should be some options to speed up leveling for people who do not enjoy it,something like high XP rewards for dungeon completion etc.Better that than talking to same NPCs four times and skipping boring conversations.

Just for fun and giggles lets compare the starting areas of ESO and that other Story Driven MMO

In the other game one can do all the quest listen to voice overs and do the 2 little Flash Points on the starter rock get to 10-12 and be to the next zone in under 3 hours.

Then at 10-12 one has several options in which to level, Flash Points, Warzones or continue the story. Or heaven forbid, a combination of all of them.

In other games I kill everything on the way to and from a quest locations, the places are populated with NPC's to kill. Khentary Roost if your lucky one might run across 2 Alt's or two lighting bugs on the way, Same situation in Auidron, the place is huge with few NPC's to kill except in the designated quest area.

Skyrim, Obivilon are not like that either. ( not Empty)

I agree the quest are good and most well made.
