Uhhh, Vorsicht.
I recently submitted a ticket and begged for free time to The Elder Scrolls and, to my surprise, was accommodated. This is the coolest thing ever. I mean, it was only one day, but where else can you ask for free time to try a game out and have the developers actually give it to you?
So, I got my free time and started a new character, a nightblade, and worked my way through the newbie island. I made it to about level 7 and stopped. I wanted to keep playing, but I my character had half a dozen places in which to spend skill points and I had no idea where to spend them. To make matters worse, I wanted to try a different weapon, but I couldn't figure out how to respec (or even if I could respec).
So, paralyzed by indecision, I decided to reroll and try out a tank.
I made an Orc Dragon Knight. I figured that, this being an MMO and all, a tank would be a no-brainer. Well, I wandered around for a couple hours doing all of the quests in the starting city, looking for a shield to take with me into the newbie island. I eventually leveled up to 6ish and never found a shield. Once again, I couldn't decide what to do, so I did nothing and logged off.
I think that this may be the first game to come up with a truly flexible gameplay model. It's certainly the first one that I have played. The problem is that I have spent years being trained by other MMOs to respect the meta. You don't play what is fun; you play what is the best. After a game launches, there is maybe a month long gap where there aren't any spreadsheets to tell me what to do, but after that, there is quickly narrowed down a best class and a worst class, a best spec and a worst spec. I have spent years being told what to play and how to play and the freedom afforded to me by The Elder Scrolls is frightening. I need someone to tell me what to do.
I wasn't even going to write any of this, and maybe I shouldn't have; I'm not even sure that anyone will read it or find it helpful. It's just been three days since my 24 hours with The Elder Scrolls and I still can't get it out of my head. I don't know that if I fork over the $15 I will be able to come up with a class/weapon combination that I want to play, but I'm somehow anxious to try. I am hoping that this time I can find my way into some sort of guild (or whatever equivalent is in this game), because I really do need some sort of direction.
In any event, I will likely be seeing some of you in game shortly. If, indeed, anyone actually reads this post. Thanks for letting me ramble.
TLDR; Got a free day, I was paralyzed by indecision, I quit in frustration, I still want to play, but maybe not.
