Thieves Troves are a little too "intense"

First off I have to say that I LOVE Thieves Troves! I think they are the BEST addition to ESO in a LONG time. They add additional tasks throughout Tamriel and one of my chief concerns about DLC was that the original zones would be forgotten and neglected.

That being said, the Trove's "glow" is a bit too much. As I'm running around they are hard to ignore.

I have not yet bought the Thieves Guild DLC (Dar-Ja'Taba isn't yet level 50  ) and am wondering if the glow goes away once the DLC is purchased? I think these troves should be something that are hidden and must be sought out, not something that screams at you from the distance.

Now, I would totally be fine if there was a skill that made these auras appear (like crafting mats) or if there was a toggle in settings. As it stands now, the glow is just too much.

Am I alone in this?

See if you can find the troves in these pictures! It's like the easiest game of Where's Wlado.

I really think they should remove the glow altogether and just make them a recognizable shape/color, like treasure chests.

I didn't even KNOW they did that!... Netflix and ESO. That would be plenty enough for me.

I totally get the glow to "draw in" those that have not bought the DLC... when we buy the DLC, does the glow go away?

No same, it glows and makes this buzzing sound - easy to find without to even look really - just follow the sound.

Edit: and if you have access to the DLC, you can open them right away, without to even be in the thief guild, you get the skill line, I wonder now, what will happen, when I will finally join the guild. The description says, can just be opened by thief guild members, but in fact, you can do as soon as you have access to the DLC without to have spoken to Guen even or to have been in Hew's Bane at all.

Thieves just really love mage glitter. But that stuff gets everywhere.

They glow and hum forever until you accidentally open one in public and people start screaming at you and you're all like 'Finders keepers!' and the guard is like, 'Want to find and keep this sword up your ***?' and I'm like 'Is it a big sword?'

There is not even a lock or so, you can just open them and get the stolen goods - if there is a large shipment crate, you just have to be careful not to open it when observed in public, otherwise you can carry that stuff around, no one cares. some set pieces are interesting and supporting stealth gameplay - but ok, I am still low level, the items are scaled to level.

yes, the troves are everywhere - on my 8-10 minute fetch run for mats are 3 of those - I can open 2 of them twice and one once; they respawn a bit too fast IMO.

Agreed, the glow is annoying. Of course, its the least of the troubles with treasure troves... the short respawn timer and the easy acessibility (always respawning in the same spot) makes then far too easy for the bots to farm... I really hope that will be adressed at some point.

Like I mentioned in another thread:
Making them locked would be a good start to adress the problem! Random respawn locations and/or random respawn timers would be another good thing!

I'd also adore it if there were "random encounters" associated with opening those roves... say, 75% nothing happens, 20% a NPC fellow thief pops up, yells "That's MINE!" and attacks, 5% a guard who had been staking out the trove steps into view with thir trademark "Stop right there, criminal scum!" and a set of shackles ("flee or pay" screen, and hope you have clemency or all your ill gotten goods may be gone...)
And then... shift the chances for each trove you open within a short period of time? Say, first one is 75/20/5, open another within 15 minutes and the chances get 50/35/15, open a third and you have 30/45/25, fourth 10/55/35, fifth 0/60/40, sixth 0/40/60... et cetera... (take that, claw-cutters!)

Or best - all of the above, and just raise the loot quality?

  • badbeansnub18_ESO
    Thank you OP!!!

I completely agree!! Treasure troves too easy to find and for my non-thief characters annoying.

Make the treasure troves harder to find by not having a glow!! Or better yet make a skill that lets you spec for a glow for troves and chests! Similar to trade skills glow when within a certain distance.

    Thanks again OP!

I prefer the glow and slight noise. I got tired really fast of not being able to spot things after just a few treasure maps back in, oh, April of 2014.

I also think there are far too many of these troves, they are far too easy to spot and to hear.
One or two days playing and they already start to annoy me (it's like with the Nirnroot - in Skyrim for example you could switch off the glow and the sound with a mod on PC). I think it won't be too long and I'll try to ignore them - but for now they make it really hard to ignore them.

They are easy money (if you are not looking for immeasurable riches) and I also like the idea of getting the treasure maps (I really want to discover them all once with every char) - but after only two days the treasure maps are clogging the inventory of my main char - actually I would like to do Cadwell's Gold and not looking for chests in other zones I already have been to long ago *sigh*.

So I will try to ignore them - but from a distance the glow sometimes resembles that of a lore book - and I am constantly looking for those. So either I start missing the lore books or I keep looking what's hiding behind the glow - a book or just a trove again?

You see, I just haven't made my mind yet.

Make them lootable by everyone but once you open it it does not reset for 24 hours. Up the quality of the loot in them to compensate.

A toggle? It could be on the settings page: Make Troves easier for others to find before me: Yes/No

If they change it, it should be for everyone.

I like the keen eyes passive that the thief skill line can invest in. That is a good solution to the issue, but it would take them weeks to implement such a thing and would probably be something they could only introduce in a major Update.

In the short term, making them harder to see, and less like Nirnroot, would be a start.

Personally, I would like to see the glow and buzz changed so that it requires being in the thieves guild (like the keen eye) to see, non-members can see them but no glow. different difficulty levels (with commiserate loot qualities) again, based on thieves guild entry (non-members have to pick all of them, thieves only some).

I would not have the thieves guild equivalent of "Keen sight" require a skill point because in my case, I have few to spare.

I read and like the idea of random encounters associated with them, but again, would change it so the same thieves keen sight would allow us a chance to see the encounter, allowing a reaction to them prior to getting to the loot box...
Of all the things I have lost, I miss my mind the most...

Running around and finding them is not the problem here - but camping in one spot and loot them over and over and over again, because some of them - not all as I found out - are respawning too quickly. I think Jessica from ZOS said, that this is not intentional or by design that short and they are looking into the issue - they do not want campers there as well.

ZOS could have made it so they would be easy to get with a passive "Thieves sense" skill. Make it so that you level up to the point of them being what they are now. It's all about creating gameplay opportunities @Volkodav

Jeez. I didnt say anything about wanting the game to hand me everything.Have you even seen me say I want things handed to me? I just said I was having fun with the farming of the troves, and people dont like it when anything is easy, even if it just a trove box.My only comment about something being fun cos it is easy. I never said anything about wanting it all handed to me.

Ahh.That I can understand. I didnt camp in one spot when I was hunting them.I didnt even know about them until yesterday.I had the thought that they were like the treasure chests that would respawn. No one says a word about people who run the beaches in Khenarthi's roost to farm them.
I wasnt aware that they respawned that quickly. I had several spots that I would go to,from one to the next.Almost getting killed by Lions,Wasps and other such critters. XD

heh. Sorry @Volkodav , to me the term "Handed to you" is the same as saying "it's easy" as in:

    "give to on a plate
(redirected from hand to on a plate)

give/hand something to somebody on a plate

to let someone get something very easily, without having to work for it "

    http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/hand+to+on+a+plate

I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth, I think we probably just use that term differently.

I'm not against the glow being something we can earn, and I get that it is mostly there to entice players who don't own the DLC into buying the DLC. Mostly I just want a way to turn the damned glow off... it's quite distracting.

Also, I'm curious. If I buy the DLC do I automatically get the Thieves Guild Skill line on all my characters? I would earnestly hate that. I have ONE character that is a thief, a few that are "neutral" and one that is "Lawful Good"... I really don't even want the Thieves Guild skill line on this character.

You get the thieves guild skill line by starting the thieves guild quest. If you don't start the quest, you don't get the skill line.

Woo hoo! That's GREAT news!! Thanks @smacx250 ! That's a HUGE selling point for me! ZOS can consider it SOLD. (I already bought the crowns, so I guess, as far as ZOS is concerned, it IS sold. heheh)
