You get the thieves guild skill line by starting the thieves guild quest. If you don't start the quest, you don't get the skill line.
Edit: And it is per-character - one character can get it, while others don't
Woo hoo! That's GREAT news!! Thanks @smacx250 ! That's a HUGE selling point for me! ZOS can consider it SOLD. (I already bought the crowns, so I guess, as far as ZOS is concerned, it IS sold. heheh)
Indeed, and that is one of the things I do like! Since I have three "rougeish" characters, who will do TG... and five others who never will. You get the thieves guild skill line by starting the thieves guild quest. If you don't start the quest, you don't get the skill line.

Eeep! Oh, well... that's not such a good design then, I'd have wished for the troves to just sit and remain untouchable for thise not into thievery, taunting them with thge loot they could steal if only they were to become lawbreakers...lordrichter wrote: »One word of warning... My "lawful good" character has the Thieves Guild skill line because I saw "blue glowing thing" and thought "Mages Guild lore book" and touched it before I noticed that it was not that at all.
Yikes!!! Thanks for the heads up!lordrichter wrote: ».You get the thieves guild skill line by starting the thieves guild quest. If you don't start the quest, you don't get the skill line.

Just an FYI,I'm not a jerk for having fun running after those troves.
Also I dont and never have camped to get anything.I havent the patience for that sort of stuff.I do farm,as everyone else does, but not in one place.
I dont want you to get the wrong idea because I hit as many of those as I saw.Once I realized what they were,I had fun with them for a bit.
Besides,I was mostly joking around.
heh. Sorry @Volkodav , to me the term "Handed to you" is the same as saying "it's easy" as in:
"give to on a plate
(redirected from hand to on a plate)
give/hand something to somebody on a plate
to let someone get something very easily, without having to work for it "

I wasn't trying to put words in your mouth, I think we probably just use that term differently.
I'm not against the glow being something we can earn, and I get that it is mostly there to entice players who don't own the DLC into buying the DLC. Mostly I just want a way to turn the damned glow off... it's quite distracting.
Also, I'm curious. If I buy the DLC do I automatically get the Thieves Guild Skill line on all my characters? I would earnestly hate that. I have ONE character that is a thief, a few that are "neutral" and one that is "Lawful Good"... I really don't even want the Thieves Guild skill line on this character.

I think the glow is fine personally, I'm more upset that it requires the first quest in the thieves guild to be completed in order to spawn them.

So... if I don't want the skill avoid them like the plague! Got it!...So NOT having the skill on a character is going to be sort of like an unspoken achievement. That's kind of cool.
I'd still like the option to turn off that glow though, OR have the glow attached to a Thieves Guild passive once you buy the DLC.

How did you get to Hew's Bane without starting the quest? At first I thought I could just zone there, but it wasn't even shown in my map. I had to go into the outlaw refuge to get the quest started. You get the thieves guild skill line by starting the thieves guild quest. If you don't start the quest, you don't get the skill line.

Really? I got the Thieves Guild skill line on my main character just by going to Hew's Bane. Quen was hanging around near the wayshrine, but my character didn't talk to her. I was a bit annoyed, since he is strictly Lawful Good and would never join the Thieves Guild.

Yeah, in my experience, it is not necessary to get anywhere near the Thieves Guild quests before these things start to spawn. That might be a bug, so we will see.

You're right, just went on my alt and found several of them. Nice little pick me ups for levelling. Pretty certain it isn't a bug since it gave me the skill tree after I looted the first box.

I think that these troves are visible for all and glowing is more kind of a tease to buy the DLC or get ESO+ membership and intentional. What is a bug IMO is that you can access these troves, when you have access to the DLC, even without being a member of the thief guild, because the description says, that it can just be accessed by TG members. So either the description is wrong or it is a bug.

If anything make it so you need to put points into a skill that lets you see troves/chests/lockboxes similar to trade skills. A character puts several points into a Legerdemain skill that lets you see them all glowing.

I have an L5 Mule who found a Trove in Daggerfall, opened and gained the Thieves Skill line. At least the game told me it did, I never really looked at the skills on this guy. I mean, he is level 5 with a full set of hirelings, it's not like he has any skill points to spend. Never been to Hews Bane on this character.
