Should ESO have an option to change a characters name?

Maintenance for the week of April 7:

It seems like a lot of us aren't necessarily that great at coming up with cool names for our characters, and after getting some time into them, in some cases A LOT of time into developing the character, and we like the character, just not the name.

Should there be an option, maybe a shrine or something, that would allow us to change a characters name?

Make it a service sold at the Crown Store for a small amount. Along with race change and faction change.

Barbers should be implemented aswell, perhaps also Fleshcrafter NPCs who can change your face/body customization. But these shouldn't be sold in the Crown Store in my opinion.

These are all services people have come to expect from MMOs and even single player games.
Glarthir is crazy. Maybe harmless crazy, maybe not.

I guess I should have specified "an IN GAME option to change a characters name" This doesn't seem like something we should have to hassle customer support to get done. A shrine in some of the capital city's would do it just fine and we wouldn't have to hassle customer support that way.

I can't tell you how many times I've started an alt, bought bag space, and ended up having to delete the char in order to rename it because I wasn't allowed a name change. :( All that wasted gold...

I don't think that a name change should be something you can just do because you're bored. If you have a cool name for your character you can contact the support and then have him called that way for the rest of his life.
Otherwise I fear that some people with bad reputation would just change their name every few weeks so they won't be recognized.

and what is wrong with that? did you know it used to be law that you could run to another town and have your name changed in real life to escape problems that you accidently got involved in. theres nothing wrong with being allowed to escape embarrassment or escape problems that you got yourself into.

Yes please, My wife and I just came back and the characters that we made when the game went live had special characters in the name, and now we can not group, A lot of returning people are facing the same thing like we are, We have already contacted customer support and they told us that it was a patch put in a while back, They can fix it for us but will take up to 3 to 5 days to get back to us they are so busy right now. If this was in the game we would not have to ask for help even if you had to buy a name change from the store that would be ok too :)

The devs should put it at around 400 to 500 crowns. I'd buy one every now and then.

I tried to change the name of one of my toons. They answered me that they can only do it is the toon name have offensive words.

About your fear, the name change option could be sold in the crown store and used only for the toon where you did the purchase. Either or both a limit of 3 name changes (not counting the first one when creating your toon) or a cooldown of 15 days before doing another name change (after name change confirmation) could be implemented.

If they realize that what they did was wrong, I don't have a problem with that. But I've met a few players whose may activity was joining trial groups just to annoy the other members.
Additionally there are some pvpers that try to join groups to spy what they do and report to their home fraction.

I don't know the requirements when you want the support to change you're name, but I know people that got a change without having an offensive name or special characters in it.

If you could change your name just once or twice I would be ok with it and I don't see why anyone should need more than 2 name changes for his character.

well, thats a real shame and not cool.
But there is a remedy and fix for that allready that is perfect!
your @account name Cannot be changed! if you have that person on ignore then they cannot change that simply by changing thier name.
they are still on ignore, and will remain there, you wont see them asking for group in zone chat cause thier on ignore allready :)

I agree that it should have this option, however it has to be worked into the lore system. Like you go before a council and there is a scene with npc's talking and such - just a example. There should also be limits on how often you can change your name. Example of a situation: I change my name to Jankles, And my old name is something somebody else wants, Well I can't change my name until 30 days have past; And my old name becomes available after 35 days to people other than me in order to be sure I don't want it and have had fair chance to get it back. Just some ideas...

But there is already a system in place to avoid that, ignore lists are account wide, so if that person gets ignored, no name change will take him off my ignore list because his entire account is ignored.

No specialty required. I can legally change my name when I want in the real world, no reason to have a bunch of hoops to jump through in ESO where it's set in a world that basically just requires me to say "Hey, nice to meet you, my name's Carl" to change my name. Add to the store, quick and easy.

Going through support to change your name is a hassle but it's still a valid option.

That being said, they should have a crown store item that will allow players to change their name.

Agreed.. If a name change is aloud then it should be limited to how often, maybe 1-2 per char and with a price

What ZoS should have done was tied our names to our @handle. Then we could use whatever name we wanted with out it having been taken. Then offered up a name change token.

Yes, but with the following requirements:

    - to track all past names
    - limit both amount and frequency of changes
    - and expose all past names through the API

Excellent point. still need to limit frequency and number of changes allowed, but tieing to the account name really makes most of that less critical. In a sense it's already tied to it, but the uniqueness is still global vs. account name + char name. I wonder why they didn't do it this way.

This is the simplest most inevitable thing to add to a micro transaction system in all MMO's known to humanity.

It's right up there next to being able to change servers (NA - EU - ASIA).

It would be a nice-to-have feature for sure, however developing a front-end interface for this rather than changing it in the back-end (via a ticket, like it is now) should be less cost efficient.

Yes, I would like to see this be done by visiting the capital city for your faction and registering the new name with an official there for a gold fee, with a cool down period to prevent frequent changes for those who might misuse the feature.

Support clearly has enough to do right now - the last ticket I submitted took 3 days to get a response. I'd rather allow CS to spend their time solving actual problems than doing frivolous name changes on customer demand.

I really can't think of a good reason why not to have a name change option. I'm happy with my character names but if someone isn't, I think they should be able to change it. Players will still have their @name, so guilds could keep out unwanted players.

I would however like to change my @name, I didn't realize when choosing it, that it would be my primary name in guilds. I don't expect them to allow us to change it though and that's fine with me.
