Tomato & Difficult to find Provisioning

V12. My group of 4 sends me all prov mats they pick up and I supply them with food. from lvl 1 to v12 none of us have found a single tomato. I do however have over 100 onions. I don't think they drop in the world they seem to be hireling only which is sad because it seems to bring garbage 99% of the time.

My biggest issue is the different treatment of Tomatoes/Oats vs. Pepper. They're all used for purple recipes, yet pepper can be found in regular containers (although with a low drop rate) and the rest only comes from hirelings (at an even lower rate). This grants purple recipes wildly different values (and usefulness) depending on which rare ingredient they happen to require.

I am my guilds cook if you will. And the rare mats needed for the really good food buffs should just be that, rare.

I think the current way works. What I do noticed is there are WAY to many good provision mats found in cities containers. Make them to the common ones and leave the "good" mats to dungeons/dangerous places.

You can still do green food. But blue and purple food buffs should be rare, so we use them where needed. Instead of always have one on.

There is ONE major problem with provisioning.
    The Jazbay grape.

2 different once. 1 low level, one rare. Both look the same, have the exact same name. The only 2 ways to find out if you have the rare one is to try and group them. The 2 different ones do not group.

Or check when you making provisions how many you have when picking a recipe that requires the rare one.

I have bug reported this, but waiting patient for them to do something about it.

I think that these are the three rarest provisioning mats ingame and they all have the same drop rate but each is limited to specific areas in each faction.
I have never seen a tomato but have 19 pepper and 6 oats after looting pretty much everything while getting two characters to vet with a third on the way across two factions.

One is worth 0 and one is worth 1… and they stack that way. Annoying yes, been reported since last year.

Doubt you "found" Oats in a container. Oat Mash maybe, but I've looted every container in every town a good 50 times through the first 2 of the 3 factions… and they do not come from containers. Pepper on the other hand, I have found a couple hundred. It's uncommon but not rare. The system is weird, I'll give you that.

Tomatoes and Oats are hireling only per popular belief and lots of experience… unless they dropped from a weird mob you killed with a messed up loot table or a dungeon with a bugged crafting sack that had food for some reason… lol.

Not by popular belief, a dev confirmed it.

I've had a hireling for a while and I still don't have any tomatoes. :( But he sent me oats, so that's something.

VR5 and still no Purple recipes at all, have tons of high level mats and around 15+ tomatoes/oats. Guess I'll just keep opening every container I come across.

I've found 8 or 9 Carrots that the tool tip says food item , not a boost item. (I've also found them as boost items, like the radish)

It would be nice to know if they are totally useless or not. Anybody know? Is there a list of other useless food mats out there?

I think, AT LEAST, you ought to be able to view your recipes without being at a crafting station. That way, when you're looking through crates and barrels, you can at least check to see if you need that particular ingredient.

If I collected everything I found, I'd run out of inventory space very fast..

I believe there is an addon that allows you to view recipes while in game.

True, but it would nice to have this as part of a new build.

Question, when you take 3/3 hireling, but only 1/6 improvement, will you still get tomato's? I wasnt going to do provisioning, and instead pay someone else to make my food for me until I have an abundance of points at VR10.

I have 4 toons with only 3 points in hireling. No other points spent on it. And they all give the same mats as my provo alt with max points in it. I have noticed that the rng seems to run as a set maybe by account. One guy gets hops, everyone gets hops, not always fixed that way, but most days they all get the same stuff. Its a grape day, or an oat day, or a tomato day.

I have a small growing stack of tomatoes. ALL of them have come from the hireling, same with Oats. And I am a looting fool...not a single one of those has come from a container. I have a growing stack of Pepper and I have received that mat from both the hireling and containers.

Onions and Red Wheat seems to be fairly common when you loot a bunch of containers.

This tomato thing is madness. It's ridiculous to buy any because if you MAKE the food and sell it you would only get your money back from BUYING the tomatoes. I've had a hireling since I started my character and I haven't received ANY tomatoes. They need to make this a lootable item.

My GS has recipes in the store that don't require hireling sent ingredients only. Hopefully we get the kiosk and I'll post the trader's name later. We have the recipes at a fair price, they are a bit expensive but we don't price them at the outrages prices everyone else does.

The prices are dropping fast also, so if you have patience, wait a few days and anyone can afford...

I have four provisioner toons with 3/3 hireling. One is my main and the other three are lvl 4. I have acquired over 120 tomatoes since launch and over 80 oats since launch. I still have them all since I have only recently popped a purple recipe and it was Consummate Honey Brittle.
I'm not going to lie: hops/grapes/berries is more common. At least 65% of my hireling mails are drink, if not more. There will often be a cycle where I get all drink and only rarely a cycle where it is all food. Further if there is an all food cycle then one of them is 4 Salt.

On the negative side, the RNG must really hate you. I've got 20 tomato's in the bank from two Provisioning Hirelings (both 2/3).

On the positive side, you've got to be happy about having a purple recipe to need the tomato's for! Receiving the tomato's is much more likely than finding a purple recipe. (Well maybe not for you. lol)

Tomato's and Oats are 2/3 or 3/3 Hireling Loot only. You will never find them in the wild as you do with other food stuffs.

Tomatoes can be found in tomato crates (they look kind of like an apple crate). They are fairly common. I have tons of tomatoes. Expect to find several tomato crates on every ship. I hope that helps.

This is taking it too far, mate. August 2014. Now is August 2015.

FYI, at that time, tomatoes were the rare ingredient for one of the high level purple (tri-stat) food recipes.

Really why do people dig out those threads and answer them with?

There's a fair amount of tomato in coldharbour. Of course that won't help you until you get there. It's around. There's two particular delves in EP that have quite a bit of tomato. You can also just buy stacks of it in guild stores. I regularly have tomatoes for sale in my guild store.
