Unknown Error has Occurred - Character will not load into game.

Mikalaus
I had finished questing in Stonefalls and was going to the next zone Deshaan. As I entered Deshaan I was put on the loading screen for the zone. During this loading screen (which lasted ~1-2 minutes) the game logged me out, back to the log-in screen with the error: "Error: An Unknown Error has occured."

I immediately tried to log back in. I logged into the character screen successfully, and clicked the same character to load into the game. I was put on the normal loading screen as my character logged into the game. However, after ~30 seconds on this log-in screen, the screen went black with only my cursor showing. After about another 1 minute, it kicked me back to the log in screen, with the message: Error: an unknown error has occurred.

Since then, I have completely logged out, and back in with the same event happening. I have checked for updates, my game is up to date. I have also used the repair tool, waited for that to complete and tried to log back in, I get the same issue.

I have submitted an e-mail to customer support and await its response. Has anyone had something similar happen? Does anyone know of any possible fixes?

I have a character that I can't get through Stonefalls due to the constant rollbacks. Every 25 minutes, it kicks me out to the character select screen, and when I reload, it reloads my character as if I never played those 25 minutes. The fact that you cannot reload at all may be a continuing symptom of the 301 bug that kept scores of folks offline this past weekend, or it could be a Stonefalls issue.

For my part, I have been playing on a different character in a different zone that so far is not being rollbacked (knock on wood). Have you tried another character in a different alliance? It stinks to have to leave your other character, but there are so many other horrendous problems ZOS is dealing with at the moment, they may not get to this for quite some time.

I had been questing in Stonefalls (I'm on AD so it is my Veteran Rank 1 zone) without any issues. I have not tried to log onto any other characters, as I will be leaving for work shortly.

I have the exact same problem. Finished up Stonefalls, VET Rank 2, went into Deshaan logged out and now I can't log my character back in because of an unknown error.

Yeah I was headed for a quest myself there. Really annoyed that I can't log in and continue my quest. Come on ESO, real life is sucking super hard for me right now and I need my game world to escape into and get my mind off of things before I have another panic attack. GET THIS FIXED

I just posted this on another thread also about the endless loading screen. I'll add it here as well just to show you are not alone OP!

    ~From another post~

I have also experienced this today. Last night the game was fine. Everything worked as intended. Logged in today and was able to get onto my main in Deshaan. However, everything was unresponsive. As a possible fix to such things I logged out and expected to log back in and select my character again but nope!

No character select screen for me...instead...

I was hit with the loading screen of infinity™.

I've done a repair via the launcher...
    Turned off all add-ons..
Ran game as admin (even though it already is running that way.)
Bypassed launcher/desktop icons and tried to run it.

Still I never see the character select screen anymore. Just the loading screen of infinity™.

    *sigh*

So many bugs and problems within this game. Yes, it's cool to have new content (looking at you Craglorn and patch 1.1.2!) so soon after launch but not at the price we're all paying (and the price for subs!) with game breaking bugs/errors/problems.

I'm quickly losing patience and enthusiasm to continue with this game..

It is extremely frustrating... it would seem I have no more access at all to my daggerfall covenant characters. Which is just amazing since they are my primary characters. Apparently ZOS is 'conducting an investigation' but I'm running out of reasons to justify spending more of my time (and money) on a game that I can only ever play for a few minutes at a time.

This just happened to me. I'm playing AD, VR2, finished up Stonefalls and when I transitioned in to Deshaan my screen went black, then took me back to login with the "unknown error has occurred". I am able to log in to a different character and get in game. This character however can not. I login, select the character, game loads, then as soon as I pop in to the world my screen goes black and after a few moments I end up back at the login screen with the same "unknown error has occurred".

I am running ESO as admin. My drivers are current, and again, I'm able to log in to a different character and get in to the game world. I did run a dxdiag and copied that info in to my support email.

This is really aggravating. It's the first real issue I've had with ESO, but for me, it's a big one. Hopefully I'll hear back from support soon (crosses fingers). I will post back here with any updates.

I am having the same exact problem, I cant login to my Main character who is in Mourn hold in Deshann. I logged him in fine last night. But cant login this morning/afternoon I get same problem it cycles saying Loading character, then after 5 mins it either stays that way, or dumps me back to Login screen with "Unknown Error" Please Tell us whats UP>?????????

I'm curious. Is everyone here experiencing this with Vet versions of the zone? I don't believe I've read anyone (here as well as other loading screen loop posts) having issues with normal leveling zone areas. It seems to be specific to Vets. Which would help Support in finding the issue. If they are even looking, that is.

I just had this happen to me as well, to a character in Stros M'kai. I've gotten the unkown error has occurred message twice, and now I'm getting an infinite "Requesting character load..."

I don't know about Deshaan, as I'm not having the issue with that zone, but my character in Stros M'kai is a low level alt, so not the vet zone.

I can confirm this is happening with my lvl 6 character that I was playing in Stro M'kai earlier today. I can log a character I have into Auridon with no issue, so it is not my client or network connection.

I am unable to load into Stros M'cai as well. My other daggerfall in Stormhaven is fine. I can also log into Auridon just fine. It alternates between unknown error and infinite load

I got a reply from support. I did check this but it did not work. Still have issue. Posting here, maybe it will work for someone.

"Thank you for contacting The Elder Scrolls Online Team.

We deeply apologize for the inconvenience this has caused you. We will do everything possible to resolve this issue for you.

This issue seems to be related to a new fullscreen mode introduced in the patch. Please try the following:
    • Navigate to C:\Users\Username\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live
    • Locate the file UserSettings.txt and open it with Notepad
    • Locate the line starting SET FULLSCREEN_v5 - it will be set to SET FULLSCREEN_v5 "2"
    • Change this to SET FULLSCREEN_v5 "1" and save the file
    • Restart the launcher and hit Play
Also, please perform the following trouble shooting steps if the above steps did not resolve the issue.

The UserSettings.txt file in the My Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live was not updated with a fresh install, or after patching.
The new UserSettings.txt file contains several new instruction lines that are not in the pre-patch file.
You may need to update your UserSettings.txt file to get the game to successfully launch for you.
First - Verify your My Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live\UserSettings.txt is NOT set with the "Read Only attribute. (In order to keep the pre-game load credits from loading this may have been set)
    • Left click on the file and select "Properties" from the menu.
    • Verify the "Read-only attribute (General Tab) is NOT checked.
    • Select OK.
You can edit your file manually with my notes below
INDIVIDUAL CONFIGURATION LINES/COMMANDS THAT HAVE BEEN CHANGED:
    • Command: "SET RequestedNumThreads "0" needs to be REPLACED with two different command lines as follows:
    • SET RequestedNumJobThreads "0"

The following 4 command lines could be added to your UserSettings.txt file with no deletions.

I think we should all unsub and boycott all Bethesda games. This is totally unacceptable. I have played MMO's for decades and never once has another company allow this to happen. I expect they are doing it on purpose to prevent us learning some deep dark secret about how bugged Stros M'cai is.

These solutions worked for me when I had the black screen of death™ upon clicking the play button from the launcher (post 1.1.2). Of course, I got help from another player on the forums who also had the same issue. I am no longer running the new full screen mode. Like most people having issues, windowed is the way to go.

This loading loop of death™ is NOT that issue, and my user settings already have these fixes within them. So, nice attempt ZOS.

    What's next? *taps foot impatiently*
