And yes, i can confirm it doesn't work in game or through the account page. And no, I haven't used it before.

I don't know why they sent this Email.
This Code was part of ESODirect, when they revealed the new update in a stream at april the 10th and everyone could redeem said code and the pet as a goodie.

But my guess is, they want to give those a chance who have missed it.

That will be exactly the reason.

It would be impossible to find a time when everyone who might want to could watch the livestream, so if that was the only way to get the code a lot of people would miss out because they had to be at work or travelling or whatever. Sharing it via email adds another opportunity for more people to get it.
