Hiccups

Is anyone else experiencing hiccups when entering open areas (like running into a cave, passing through a threshold into a city)? I'm also getting them whenever a quest is given or updates as well as when I close my map. Only noticed it the past 2 days or so. Two others I've been playing with said they were also experiencing it.

Don't eat so fast. Drink water. Hold your breath. ;)

It might just be lag. It happens. Relog, and see if it's still a problem. Keep an eye on your latency. Turn off a couple add ons. Turn down some video settings. Make sure your internet connection is stable. At worst, do a repair install. There's not really much you can do about it if the problem isn't on your end.

I have a lot of addons and have been getting 'too many anchors', turned off some and it seemed to stop the map thing, but it still happens when I turn in quests. The guys I've been playing with who had the same issue are in different parts of the country and don't use addons. I can't turn my graphics down any further than they are atm lol. Everything else in game and out of it is responding fine as far as internet connection goes.

Yep,I get this, only quest related. Any time I walk through the entrance to a cave or speak with an NPC there is a slight freeze.
Happens every time a quest is updated.

This started happening a few weeks ago.

Yes! I get this all the time and it drives me nuts. I've been meaning to do a bug report but didn't know how to describe it. "Hiccups" is perfect.

This is exactly the attitude that stops problems from getting solved.

If the issue is widespread, it could be due to a number of different factors, one of which might be your computer. I have noticed that my game tends to run better when I make sure the launcher isn't running in the background. If the launcher is running, I tend to get a little more stuttering or just overall graphical lag (it looks different from server lag).

You really think developers are not solving problems because of this guys's attitude? Man, I hope not...

There really are a lot of hiccup issues right now. The game is getting fixed, it will get better. Don't stress it too much, just report bugs responsibly.

That is very odd. Modern Multiplayer design seperates the Network and Graphics parts totally. What you descired could be cause by the UI thread waiting from data from the networkign thread. Or the CPU being taxed out by something.
But as I said, nobody uses that design anymore. It is even frowned upon for desktop applications, it would be insanely stupid to use it for a MMO.

Maybe you only have a single core computer? Maybe you disabeled multithreading in the settings? (here is a addon editor for the settings.txt http://www.esoui.com/downloads/info176-ESOToolbox.html).
Maybe a virus scanner keeps slowing down Disk access?

Hm. The friend who's also been getting this has been experiencing short freezes whenever someone dies as well. When we first noticed this, the three of us were entering the same cave, and we figured it was just a janky area, but it's been happening ever since when entering other thresholds.

By far the most annoying is when quests update, be it in a dialogue or while you're in the middle of doing something.

As far as I know I haven't changed anything about how my system is running, even so, I don't know how the two others could've experienced the same thing all at once.

I wonder if it also has anything to do with getting 1 second load screens seemingly randomly while running around, which also recently started happening.

    So far I've tried,

    - closing the patcher
    - closing Chrome, which I usually run in the background
    - installing pending Windows updates
    - leaving group
    - turning off all addons
    - relogging, /reloadui
    - doing a repair via patcher

    no improvements yet.

Every patch / maintanance makes the game seem more and more nonresponcive for me atleast.

Before craglorn only place where my fps dropped from 55 - 60 to 2 was in al'akir desert inside the water pools.

After craglorn random fps freezes all over the world ,at random points lasts about
    2 - 7 seconds
after the last 3 maintanences : ability lag , random lagspikes , random crashes , lots of small 1 - 2 second fps stutterings and still on 2 - 7 second fps drops
( especialy in daggerfall near the mages guild )

and these combined whit various other small bugs kills a part of the enjoyment this game has.

I thought I was the only one in Nirn that experiences this.

I like it when it freezes after running into certain female characters.

You get a face full of...

Excuse me, ahem... I am experiencing this too!

Running through any open gateway where there is a quest icon hanging in space in the open gateway will cause a pause of something like a quarter second. I see this in Davons Watch and in Coldharbor. I can go in and out repeatedly and I will see the hitch every time. Disabling addons does not change it. Theres another thread about this.

My Davon's Watch has a quest thing in the door too, that might explain it. It definitely seems to have something to do with quest markers/updates. Do you have a link to that other thread by chance?

They should have a chance to localize it more easily with this data. Could you run the FPS coutner too and say if the FPS drops shortly after the hang? If something is holding the UI thread it should drop sharply after this.

The game seems to use a classical 3 threaded design (how every MMO does it) for the client:
(G)UI Thread wich deals with showing the world and getting your input to move you around in it. Propably also where addons run.
Network Thread wich stays in contact with server, get's input (ability uses) from the UI thread and can override things like position in the world and shown HP values (when there was any desync between game and server).
TextureLoader Thread (often a dynamic amount of threads based on avalible CPU cores), that deals with loading textures, music, audio and other big files from the disk.

That design prevents problems with either part (network, disk) from locking up the User Interface. It also means non-ui stuff is not limited to the Framerate (*cough*Need for Speed Rivals*cough*).
If it is locking up the UI thread, it is very likely display related.

Also an old trick for problems with old and new games alike is to run the Dx9Redistributeable.exe to properly install Dx9:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109
It did help a lot with framerate in SWTOR on my old computer and now I install it on principle even on my new Windows 8.
No idea why it helps, it just does...

Yes, this started for me with the last patch as the game suddenly started eating more CPU than it had. Prior to that nothing like it had happened to me. My fix: change graphics from full screen to windowed full screen. Immediately cut 15% of the CPU load and the hiccups stopped.

Same resolution, same settings...just the mode change.

The poster who commented about the launcher is also spot on. It's ridiculous that the launcher doesn't cleanly close when the game client fires up...poor design/implementation...but that's the way it is. I launch from an eso.exe shortcut unless there's an update, but for those who don't; make sure you kill the launcher after the game starts.

Also I have dx9 installed since its required for eq1 to run at all, and I have teso running in full screen windowed mode. Still does it.

edit: to be clear, its not a serious bug for me. Just annoying.

Yep. There are MULTIPLE threads on this forum about it, as well as reddit. Been happening since last weeks patch. Every time I enter a "quest objective area" or "white scrolling text" comes on my screen it freezes for a 0.5 second time frame. Annoying as ***. I have a ticket open with support and sent them a PC report they requested.

I have this issue with ALL add-ons disabled and I have a PC WELL above the recommended specs to run ESO and I run at 60fps with ultra graphics...except when I enter quest areas or white text crushes my system....need this fixed or there is no way I can resub. Wont play the game this way.

Force weapon swap to have priority over EVERYTHING. Close enough.
Make stamina builds even with magicka builds.
    Disable abilities while holding block.
Give us a REASON to do dungeons more than once.
Remove PVP AoE CAP. It is ruining Cyrodiil.
Fix/Remove Forward Camps. They are ruining Cyrodiil.
Impenetrability needs to REDUCE CRIT DAMAGE. Not negate entire builds.
Werewolf is not equal to Vamps/Bats.

The micro stutter from entering quest areas/scrolling white quest text happens on full screen, windowed full screen, add ons ON, add ons OFF. There is nothing you can do in game to stop it.
