I never liked pvp. Just not cause I suck at it. I like the fact that you can attack anyone, but from my early years in WoW, I played on RP-PVP servers, just cause it makes sense. If 3 orcs meets a gnome on a road.....they just dont say hi.....they eat it!
But pvp in WoW became so gutless. It was always a gang against 1. At the time at least in the start where there was world pvp in WoW.
Cyrodiil totally changed my view. I dont see it as pvp, its battles! And with planning, tactics. Using "real" war tactics if you will.....you create a vast number of plans of attack or defense.
I like that Cyro has PvE as well, and even though I dont like 1-1, it is a danger to be there and even if I HATE getting ambushed by cowards who just wait for 1 person to show.....it adds to the thrill in there. Once again, another biased poll. There is a huge gray area between arena & zerging lone players in Cyrodiil.
This Poll suggests that nearly HALF of the PvPers in Cyrodiil are solo. That is a far cry from the "zergfest" that everybody seems to complain about on the Forums though. Zergs can be a bit of a magnet though, but they are avoidable. If you are running toward keeps on fire, you're going to find one. If you're in an enemy questing area, you're not.

Kingslayer✭✭✭small scale arena is real pvpI voted for one but they are both pvp. Individual skill is less prominent in large skill where numbers matter the most. I for one like both i like to at times take on a few people and outplay them to kill them. And others i like large scale sieges. But small scale is a chance for guys to show their own scales against an opponent without fear of being zerged over for one . And friendly competition is always fun, As cyro stands their is barely any competition whatsoever. We have seen keep and emperor flipping already.1 -

Competition is the core of PVP, whether we're talking virtual PVP in video games or IRL PVP with sports. It's all about who is better at the game, not who is luckier or has more player population at certain times. RvR is nice and fun and chaotic and all, sure, but organized team v team is what truly separates the scrubs from the notscrubs, and that's what "counts" more in my opinion.1

✭Any time two players compete. Whether it's to kill each other, to craft the better gear, to make the better sale, or to run the faster trial. When your opponent is a player, it's technically PvP.
That said, most limit this definition down to being any time you can kill another player.
Some players prefer large groups, objectives and strategy. Others prefer zerg's and steamrollers. Some prefer small team cohesion. Others pick-up deathmatch. Some like free-for-all, others prefer organized ganks. Some like to ambush, others like to fight straight up.

This is an multiplayer game. I should be able to log in, join a dungeon, join a battleground, queue for a dolmen or world boss or delve, teleport in, play for 20 minutes, and not worry about getting kicked, failing to join, having perfect voice coms, or being unable to complete content because someone's lagging behind. Group Finder and matchmaking is broken. Take a note from Destiny and build a system that allows from drop-in/drop-out functionality and quick play.0 -

The small scene arena is more like a sport fight, where many things are known upfront and everything is just about team optimization.0 -

✭This is a garbage poll. Please, fix.
There are several forms of "Real PVP" and you only name 2 options in a False Dichotomy. With this Fallacy you present an either-or between limited options when other possibilities remain.
1. PVP By Non-Consent. This type of PVP involves PK'ing as the most common form. The defender is a victim who did not consent, and often is attacked by surprise. This is normally groups vs 1, or veteran attacking a newb.
PVP By Consent. Many games have shifted into a form of PVP that involves all parties agreeing. PVP Only zones, for example. Arena Combat. All parties involved not only know they are going to PVP, but intend to.
Lets look at PVP By Consent because this is the ESO model.
1. 1v1 Duel. This normally occurs either when 2 players in the same alliance want to "train" or pvp, or get better at pvp. It also happens in ESO when 1 player finds another in a Cyrodil quest hub or dungeon all the time.
2. Arena Combat. This usually involves equal teams. This is very common in MMO's, some have an instanced zone, others have it on the map somewhere. Often there are Rewards that have a special currency to buy items with.
It is also common to allow players to pause their leveling to allow them to remain in one section of the game as long as they like. In some MMO's you can lock yourself at Level 19 and just PVP in the arena until you are "ready" for level 20 to come.
3. Open Field Combat. This is Cyrodil. 3 factions, forts and special rules for an Emperor and Scrolls.
This is just 3 forms of PVP by Consent. Why should "only one" be considered as "TRUE PVP" as though other forms of PVP are less than or bad? I wish this poll asked "Which PVP do you prefer" instead of "Which PVP is real/fake/better" etc.
True PVP to me is...

The poll is kind of crappy, however, I feel a couple of your points are not exactly accurate (as I see it anyway).
What you refer to as PvP by non-consent isn't true; if you play on an open world PvP server/game you are consenting by logging in. If you enter a BG/arena/RvR area you are consenting. The rulesets and mechanics whether it be open world, RvR, BGs or arenas/duels are always known to everyone. You consent by entering those worlds or areas... end of story.
My breakdown between "true" PvP and not is: Do you know, prior to a few seconds to engaging, who or how many or what terrain you will be fighting on? Do you have to improvise and overcome with split second decisions; is the area large enough to to use terrain, LOS, MOBs or other improvisation to better your position? Do you have to manage resources? Do you have a chance to get away (or to lose your prey) or strategically retreat to regroup? Can you be outnumbered or outgeared and still use skill to overcome the odds? Do your immediate allies and odds change before and during the heat of battle? This covers everything from open world to RvR to (some) BGs.
However, arenas and dueling are much more static where you generally have a set team or a set strategy where you are are basically mashing 1234 and blowing all cooldowns/resources, with little maneuverability or on-the-fly thinking. The outcome is basically preordained, you always get the kill - or are killed... generally within a few yards of your starting point with no fear of, "what's coming around the corner..." The options are severely limited, and to me, so is the fun.
But, I agree, this is a very subjective question with far more factors to consider than what the current poll allows.
