To me PvP is when two players of opposing factions happen to meet on the field and try their best to eliminate each other. Whether it's on a large scale battle, or a one on one skirmish in the dead of night, that is what PvP is meant to be.

There is no such thing as real PvP other than maybe dueling your exact same build. Cryodill is alliance vs alliance so it is a zerg but then again so is real war. Numbers win. Arena is a joke. Class balance will always be out of whack, classes excluded and cheats will always prevail to get to the top of the ladder just like in WoW.

If skill doesn't matter or there's no victory and defeat conditions, then it's not PvP. That doesn't mean Cyrodiil can't be fun though, but it certainly shouldn't be classified as PvP. Cyrodiil is just too large scale. Cyrodiil requires too much time invested in non-combat situations and contains too little action and too much boring travel. In Cyrodiil players have no feeling of control and little feeling of contribution.
End the tedious inventory management game.

Deppends on your of view, arenas are meant to be highly competitive PvP , while the open zone PvP like cyrodiil is meant to simulate big battles , which it does.

To me the "real" is the one that gets closer to reality and lets be quite honest , people are not fair in reality , they "zerg" in the biggest armies they can get together to destroy others , they dont go in small group so that others might stand a chance in a fair fight.

So yeah , i prefer the brutality of cyrodiil.

While i understand others prefer the competitive PvP where both sides fight with , theoretically , equal chances.

I dont have much against arenas , but i do believe adding right now would be a horrible decision , because of how competitive they are , they require a lot more balancing to it , and this game cant have even more of that right now.

If by "real" you mean "the most challenging, advanced, skill intensive, rewarding, etc." then the answer is a true sandbox MMO that lets you build a town and siege other player towns.

'Real' PvP = Eve Online, which is a sandbox game like @Maverick827 commented. Outside of that anything that offers players killing other players is PvP, regardless of which flavor it comes in.

Real PvP is the place which everyone can enter and still play an important role, no matter how small that role might be.

The problem with Arena has always been that the accessibility is hidden behind a "only premade", "only spec xy", "only gear xy" requirement. Besides that, players don't really have any other role than nuking someone else down so that DPS is all there.

I made Rank 14 and a few times Gladiator and it was a huge difference in the way how I played.

While at Rank 14 I had specific players in my team for every role, we had a 40 years old guy from Scotland who protected the mine at AB and he did it great. He honestly drunk a small Scotch from time to time and you heard that on TS, but he and his ducky (pet) were a reliable and very valuable part of our team.

Then we had a Rogue that managed to go 1v2 successfully so that we always had a perfect ambush or defensive line in our squads or last but not least the Druid who went for the flags, the Warlock that stopped the flag takers ...

At Arena however, there was nothing like that. Every member of the team had to deal DPS, while hiding behind pillars. It just didn't demand as much variety and skill, but a specific item set and spec. This by the way was never the case at the large scale pvp - there I picked based on skill and role, not on item and dps.
    -

A perfect pvp system offers smaller battles and larger ones, but it always has a role setup and grants accessibility to everyone. The old grumpy who has two left hands and is as slow as a snail and therefore stays behind the lines and shoots from distance, the mom that might only scout the enemies as she watches desperate house wife's or the killer kiddo that destroys whole enemy lines. (those are just exaggerates examples to underline the point, I honestly doubt anyone watches DH while playing...)

PvP just like PvE is when made good, accessible for all, no matter what spec or skill someone has. I don't know any MMO besides DAOC, which allowed everyone to do both and have his or her own kingdom of success still.

Because of this I strongly support Cyrodil, as everyone can compete there and this is a big plus compared to WoW, WS, SWTOR or GW who all created a very elite environment where people who don't perform at the highest level are no longer welcome in pvp.

Cyrodiil is the PvP for ESO, it is crazy fun, vaguely lore friendly and you can go for large scale group battles or go hunting for single targets as you prefer.

Other games do other styles be it PvP everywhere or one on one duelling and that's fine for those games but for now at least Cyrodiil is what ESO needs not clones of other game's features.

Once they have fixed lag, skills & bugs, released promised PvE content & settled the player base down then and only then is it time to look at whether the game is truly in need of this sort of extra.

"real" doesn't mean anything. They are two different concept of PvP.
I prefer RvR pvp style because it's simply and evolution of pvp and something much bigger in scope as well as more ambitious and far harder to implement correctly. We definitely need to stick with this course of action and improve it.

@OP Neither. So I didn't vote. ESO is not so simplistic that it only has one of two options.

real PvP is when two real world players fight each other on equal terms. or two groups of real world players fight eachother on equal terms.
where the skill of the single player, or the group of players, are the reasons for them to win.

not who has the latest flavour of the month, or who has the high ground, or who has the payshop items. or who is 50levels above the other one.

for me, the best, truest (and only pvp i ever bothered to play. lol) was the guild wars original xmas snowball minigame.
each side had the same hp. the same mp. the same armour class. (thanks to a buff/debuff that caused their stats to become equal) the same wepons damage.
you ether had the Grenth skills (if memory serves, it was yellow snow and iceball) or the Dwayna skills, a couple of standard skills (think it was snowcone to heal and snow fort for defence) and a skill that was from your primary class. (mine was necromancer, so i got 'seasonal blues' which was an AoE suicide skill that when i killed myself with it, i dropped an AoE on the ground for so many secoonds)

it was all about skill with that. if you got a good team, that worked well, you could go far. and best of all, no one's character build was of any relavance.
it was all the skill of the player.

so i cant vote zerg or arena. if there was *other* that is my vote.

depends on what you think pvp is.

    player vs player
    or
    players vs players

I chose arena, because its more of a spectator sport (which ESO better have if they make a pvp arena... ability to spectate from the stands that is).

Can only obviously speak from my own opinion.

I used to hate PvP based on my previous experiences of it, now I spend about 3 evenings a week in Cyrodiil and I've never had so much fun for years.

Option 3: FPS/TPS where you have to beat your opponent with the same abilities that have been given to everyone else.

Option 4: The ability to kill other players in a multiplayer game AKA: Player vs Player.
