What would you like to see if/when ESO goes f2p?

And $15/month is nothing compared to other activities one can spend so much time with, even other games are more expensive. For an average game you pay $60 and play for 20h, in ESO you can play 100h+ per $15.

SWTOR spent half a billion, and went f2p in 6 months

But it was a badly received, badly conceived, game.

And ESO is starting to fit that description too......

F2P is the surrender flag for MMOs. I stopped playing SWtoR once this hit and it was no secret that they intended to do this since development. What was secret was the methodology in which they would operate. Having everything I had earned taken away and then told I was going to have to pay to get it back pissed me off.

Well considering that no mmo in the last 5-10 years hasnt gone f2p

Actually there are over 40 mmorpgs that are subscription based.

I won't care I will stop playing. F2P is a lie. Once the game goes "free", you have to pay 5 times the amount of a subscription, to get all the benefits you can aquire.

For those who are not familiar with f2p games, it goes like this:
1: Game goes f2p and an online store is created. Starting by selling services, and cosmetics.

2: Online sales happen every now and then with items on discount.

3: The cosmetics expand into all cosmetic kind of stuff (armour, horses etc) along with obvious lore-breaking appearances. (schoolgirl outfits etc)

4: Now that every single low level noob with a credit card is looking like he is vet 12 with 1728346 hours playtime (appearance-wise), p2w items are introduced on store.

5: Everyone who wants to stay competitive is forced to buy the store stuff or quit the game.

I call hogwash on this whole pay to win bull...

    1) there is no such thing as pay 2 win. I don't care who tries to say there is. Who are you winning against? It's an MMO that has no end therefore you CAN NOT win. The only "winning" in an MMO is PvP and I've not see anything in GW2 or SWTOR in the store that allows you to beat another player. Thus, there is NO pay to win.

    2) There are very tasteful online stores. They do not have to break lore but I'd like some nice looking armor. The armor in this game isn't attractive at all.

    3) Who cares what that low level noob with a credit card looks like. Honestly, does it really bother you that much that someone wants his/her character to look good? Why? It's not hurting you at all.

    4) Cosmetic does not equal competitive. SWTOR and GW2 has proven that as have others.

Honestly, all this pay2win stuff in nonsense in a game like this. And so is the f2p. Even though SWTOR is a certain f2p model, it is the subbers that are buying the most stuff in the store because we want our characters to look great.

I think ESO devs need to get their act together, really. It's getting ridiculous that these games don't have the balancing done prior to launch and that all the balancing done for PvP, kills it for the PvE players. Also, I want to see cosmetic things in the store. Getting gold in this game is ridiculous and then when you do, everything you can get with it costs way too much. They need to balance that also.

I love this game, play it every day but they need to do some major work on it.

    It's a matter of perspective.

Let's say we are pvping. I just bought this uber powerful armor and weapons and potions, while you have whatever you earned in the game.

I rip you a new one.

In this scenario, you worked hard to earn all that stuff that just let you get your butt kicked by me, who just started playing three days ago.

This is what pay to win is.

    Let's take a PvE scenario.

You spend months raiding this dungeon for this special unicorn mount. Finally, one day you get it! It is the coolest looking mount you have ever seen.

That same day ZOS puts that same mount up for sale for 10 bucks.

It might make some people feel this is pay to win.

Main reason games go F2P is to fill up empty servers.
In average you will need 4-5 times more active players in F2P than in sub and that is unrealistic, however empty server putt most of all new players off.
This is mostly an issue in the low level areas as almost all the players do endgame even on populated servers.

This is less an issue with eso because of megaserver.

Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

If they have more mounts, costumes, furry little pets, unlimited inventory space etc. I'll be off like a shot. One of the reasons, actually the only reason, I'm staying with this right now is that I believe they will fix all the faults and the game is true to the Bethesda inspired fantasy world I've bought in to.

The day it starts to turn into a cuddly, fluffy, dumbed down clone of WoW and Rift, that's me gone.

I would hate this game to go FTP, cash stores are horrible mainly because 9/10 times the store dictates the content, if they cannot find anything in content or story to put in the story the content never see's the light of day.

This often ends with sub standard poorly written content.

So called F2P games always seem to end up costing me more than a $15 a month subscription game. So I do not play them anymore.

Does not matter, this company is going to drive me off before it goes F2P anyway.

Your clearly uninformed or don't know what you're talking about.

ESO won't go that direction. You get patches every week in ESO, that's due to that 15$ sub you pay each month. I wouldn't have started playing ESO if it was f2p, and I don't think a lot of you would have as well.

The only two reasons I would leave ESO are:

    1. It goes F2P. Too many jerkoffs join in at that point that don't really give a crap about the game and wouldn't be playing if it weren't free. Not a fun community at that point imho.

    2. ZOS ignores its player base and doesn't fix the current issues in a timely manner. I only have so long an attention span...

Well considering that no mmo in the last 5-10 years hasnt gone f2p

Actually Eve Online hasn't gone f2p and they just hit 11 years.

Also Dark Age of Camelot, hitting 13+ years old is not f2p or p2w- but the poster will conclude they are out of his 5-10 year range. Only 2 known games went F2P- Sw:ToR and War: Online- both horrible games built on hype. Also very bandwaggony games.

Rift, Age of Conan, and Tera also went F2P, however all were also out for a good while before that happened. CoV/CoH also went the F2P route for a bit before closing if I remember right.. Pretty much any MMO that launched in the 5-10 year range has.. so that's at least right. However very very few, if any save for the two you listed, went F2P within the first year.. which is where this thread majorly jumps the gun. Add to that Zeni doesn't seem keen on the F2P idea and I don't see it happening within the next few months.

To add to the list of old games that are still sub based. Ultima Online :)

Update: After checking, even Warhammer Online was a few years before shutting down, and it looks like the F2P version of the game never officially launched. It got shut down in open beta in 2013. So.. that leaves the only example I can think of where a game went F2P within the first year of it's release to be SWTOR.

Swtor went F2P after 13 months. Therefore not within the first year. You did a great job of checking your facts with Warhammer. You kind of missed it with swtor.

    Correct.
Although BioWare has not disclosed development costs, industry leaders and financial analysts have estimated it to be between $150 million and $200 million or more, making it, at the time, the most expensive video game ever made.
