Well considering that no mmo in the last 5-10 years hasnt gone f2p, it is a reasonable assumption this will as well. How would you like to see it done? Lots of paywalls, or lots of p2w store stuff?

Oooopsy.....FFXI(Finale Fantasy 11) is still pay to play and its been that way for over 12 years!!!!!!! Now that says something that no other MMO can say. Even after 12 years old its still awesome and has decent graphics for its age! Yups, FFXI has serious bragging rights! Some people will say it sucks but those are WoW kids that dont like to strain there brains and have no appreciation for something actually challenging. FFXI is so huge and complex that its staggering and blows the hell outta any other MMO around.

Like it or not you have no choice but to acknowledge that FFXI is a very successful game!!! ~,^

And published outside the 5 to 10 year time frame.

Agreed. F2p ruins any game. This isnt a game for children, subs are possible and there is a massive fan base.

I mentioned that game in this thread. I still play it. Tbats why I am baffled that a twelve year game not wow clone. Ffxi was before wow, could have an ah or guilde store searchable. Easy way to friend list, and so many other things. Even phasing they did successfuly.

Twelve years later it feels we taken steps back. And much of what they develope now for ffxiv, they bri g that programing benefits to ffxi. Warpi g, stuck, unstuck, armor swap, party invites and more. They had auto focus camera and first third person.

You can change jobs. If ezo did that, it would of made vet lvls fun. Could kept lvl 50 as well.

Thats why I get so baffled. How could a 2002 game released for a ps2 "console" survive today. As it is eso goal to do the same for ps4.

To be fair ffxiv learned from ffxi mistake. They made 14 pc version first console second. Due to formating and programing pc made it easy to transfer over, and many more functions you could do.

Eso should of went this route.

Replying to the title: "What would you like to see if ESO goes f2p?"

I would like to see my steam library get some use, if this goes F2P, I'll be heading out.

The one thing they could really implement to hold my interest, would be to make this an elder scrolls game. Without player housing, this is just another MMO.

Not to continue feeding uniformed spouters, Bethesda stated clearly they will shut down servers if sub dropped off to the point the game was terminal.

Private ownership means not answering to anyone. the money upfront came directly from 1 company. It is not up to anyone what happens to the product outside of that company. No shareholders to report to. It is in their best interest to keep it open a few months longer to see if the money invested in consoles will be worth marketing them next year as they already put off the release date to avoid the link between console and the bruise the pc version has left on their face.

This game will stay up and paid monthly or close and never open again. No grey area.

Actually Eve Online hasn't gone f2p and they just hit 11 years.

Also Dark Age of Camelot, hitting 13+ years old is not f2p or p2w- but the poster will conclude they are out of his 5-10 year range. Only 2 known games went F2P- Sw:ToR and War: Online- both horrible games built on hype. Also very bandwaggony games.

In the old ffxi days updates were every three months. New areas, gearsets, mo sters. In between job ajustments. If eso released pve updates every three mo ths with skill trees, areas, quest and things like dark brother, spellcasti g and such it is worthy of a monthly fee even if the get rid of all pvp.

I won't care I will stop playing. F2P is a lie. Once the game goes "free", you have to pay 5 times the amount of a subscription, to get all the benefits you can aquire.

For those who are not familiar with f2p games, it goes like this:
1: Game goes f2p and an online store is created. Starting by selling services, and cosmetics.

2: Online sales happen every now and then with items on discount.

3: The cosmetics expand into all cosmetic kind of stuff (armour, horses etc) along with obvious lore-breaking appearances. (schoolgirl outfits etc)

4: Now that every single low level noob with a credit card is looking like he is vet 12 with 1728346 hours playtime (appearance-wise), p2w items are introduced on store.

5: Everyone who wants to stay competitive is forced to buy the store stuff or quit the game.

Rift, Age of Conan, and Tera also went F2P, however all were also out for a good while before that happened. CoV/CoH also went the F2P route for a bit before closing if I remember right.. Pretty much any MMO that launched in the 5-10 year range has.. so that's at least right. However very very few, if any save for the two you listed, went F2P within the first year.. which is where this thread majorly jumps the gun. Add to that Zeni doesn't seem keen on the F2P idea and I don't see it happening within the next few months.

To add to the list of old games that are still sub based. Ultima Online :)

Update: After checking, even Warhammer Online was a few years before shutting down, and it looks like the F2P version of the game never officially launched. It got shut down in open beta in 2013. So.. that leaves the only example I can think of where a game went F2P within the first year of it's release to be SWTOR.

Second update: Someone has pointed out to me that SWTOR actually lasted 13 months. So it also did not go F2P in under a year. TSW seems to be the only game that has.

Rift did go F2P but they avoided P2W by making most everything, beyond cosmetics, available through game play and the really, really good stuff available -only- through game play.

    Now STO is totally P2W.

SWTOR is not quite P2W but it is really limited unless you subscribe ( which I do ) or spend a lot inthe store for character / race / trade / armor unlocks.

Did they go F2P within the first year of release though? I believe LotR was around 3 years before it added a F2P model. Aion also lasted 2 or so years prior to going F2P. SWTOR still stands alone as the only MMO to go F2P within a year of launch.

That's kinda my whole point. Yeah, most the MMOs that have launched recently did go F2P.. but not as soon as people seem to think they did. It's a very rare occurrence for one to go F2P within the first year or two. Most of them were up 2-3 years before F2P started up. So even if we assume that ESO will eventually go the F2P route, as I do tend to assume for all MMOs... the likelihood that it's going to happen within a year of release is extremely low.
