I've found a temporary fix for this issue, assuming you have a DX11 compatible card.
I had actually set my game to DX9 to test out SMAA (still doesn't work), and was surprised to find forcing it to DX11 in UserSettings seems to fix it.

    • Navigate to " C:\Users\YOURUSER\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live" (or liveeu if you play on EU megaserver)
    • open "UserSettings.txt"
    • search (Crtl+F) for "SET GraphicsDriver.7"
    • change D3D9 to D3D11

If your card is not DX11 compatible you can also try "OpenGL" but, at least on my system, it takes a massive performance hit.

that did the trick for me. I had to turn off compatibility mode but once that was off d3d11 in the usersettings.txt fixed the invisible 'transparant npc/player' and the wierd effects blockout portions of the screen that others have.

I'm running windows 7, dx11, driver updated nvidia 560 ti (dx11 compatible). I had previously put the launcher and eso.exe in compatibility mode for windows xp to fix an issue in the first 2 weeks of the game and hadn't had any issues until this recent craglorn patch (1.1.2?). Turning off compatibility mode and editing the my usersettings.txt fixed this graphical glitch for me.

@Mablung, I am running it on one monitor and I have to run it windowed full screen because of the NVIDIA black screen bug. Can't run it full screen. :(

CS replied to my ticket and said to change DX11 to DX9. Umm.... lol just lol. I swear they do not read these tickets.

So as it stands right now I have to run DX9 until I have a quest where I need to see projections. Then I will need to log out, change DX9 to OpenGL, log in and do the quest. Then log out and go back to DX9. The reason I use OpenGL is it allows me to see the projections without crashing. Graphics are yucky and CPU usage is crazy but it gets me through the quest. What I won't do to play this game..ugh.. :)

One other thing, are you forcing any changes with the game throught Nvidia Control Panel? Not that I have seen this is causing any issues, but might not hurt to see if you have any universal changes there that might be affecting the game.

After that though I am all out of ideas atm, sorry. Maybe someone else here has a suggestion on why people are seeing the blackscreen issue.

The only thing I changed per CS is 3D power management to max performance instead of adaptive.

Yeah power management should not be the issue if you were not having this prior to patch.

Nope I could run the game file set on DX9 with no crashes at all. Whatever they changed in 1.1.2 that caused DX9 to stop working is the issue.

Just wanted to say thanks, the D3D9 to D3D11 solution worked for me.

Still bugged esh. This entire quest line I am doing is nothing but ghosts and projections. So much fun fighting things I cannot see. Well just gonna look at it as added challenge and smile. What else can I do? :)

I see that they plan to fix the DX9 bug in the 1.1.3 release:

    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/105348/patch-v-1-1-3-preview

The only bad part is that they are recommending people use DX11 which makes me think they still have some issues. I would guess they likely will not provide exclusive fullscreen support for DX9 either. Probably not SLI support either I fear.

    • Graphics: We have implemented a fix for those who could not see ghosts when using DX9 after patch 1.1.2. However, we encourage you to use DX11 unless playing on Windows XP.

This concerns me simply because of the wording. I did not choose to use DX9. This was something forced by patch 1.1.2. I really hope that the fix is for whatever caused the initial change.

That is good news for the many people impacted by this. I have not had a chance to test yet, but did exclusive full screen support slip in for DX9 as well?

This concerns me simply because i play ESO with stereo3D (3Dvision) and that needs DX9 to work good (with the now perfect The Elder Scrolls Online - 3D Vision Fix (UPDATE) by mike_ar69)

    ENJOY ! ;)

@Ghanth‌, I agree completely. I also use that outstanding 3D Vision fix but had stopped using it during this issue. They really need to have a proper DX9/DX11/OGL toggle in the settings rather than in the INI file because I believe some people think they are using DX11 when they are actually using DX9. I say this because of some people insisting they had the ghost problem with DX11.

Also, when @ZOS_JessicaFolsom‌ encourages everyone to use DX11 unless they are using Windows XP she overlooks those that might be running Windows 7 or 8 but with an older graphics card that does not support DX11. I know they have been out for a while now but I bet there is still a number of people out there in this boat. I have seen the backlash from recent games that require DX11 such as Ghosts and Tropico 5 with people who saw that they had DX11 software installed but did not understand that they card did not support it.

Finally with little visual difference (if any) between DX9 and DX11 in this game, I am not sure why they are pushing us to use DX11.

The update 1.1.3 now allows me to use DX9 and see ghosts and projections. Support has worked with me since 4/1 on this issue and we have tried everything possible and nothing works. I can play any other game with DX11 and have no issues. I cannot play ESO using DX11.
