So, I am editing my UserSettings.txt, notice the fix did not work. Go back to check the file and it has been reverted back to D3D9. What could possibly be overriding my edit?

make sure you have admin rights.

BTW this worked for me, GTX 660

Edit: Scratch that, after 15m the game crashes. Will just wait for a real fix.

Thats really really weird as I have exactly the same card as you
Im on the 337.81 Beta Drivers, I mean, you could try those and see if it helps?
And maybe re-install the DX Redistributables? The game shouldve installed them automatically, though.

Not sure if you saw my update post, the .txt file is saving but the game is changing it back once I log in.

Got it too work finally. I had been running the eso.exe as admin also as winxp service pack 2. Turned those off and the changes stuck and can now see ghosts.

Great find on the work around!

Ah, good, I got all confused for a bit there :)

Yeah, Windows XP compatibility mode most likely disables D3D11 as D3D11 relies on WDDM, which is only on Vista and newer - I'd imagine ESO sees its "running" on xp, and changes the UserSettings to D3D9.

Careful, ninja got it to work, but his game starting crashing like crazy. So he reverted it back.

I've not had any crashes yet (2 hours playtime), but your mileage may vary.

    This is what Dxdiag says:

Not sure what else could be useful, not a programmer or developer, so Im not sure what changes they made to the graphics cards that may or may not have been in the patch.

Although whenever a game company uses words like "unintended" or customer service suggests you go /reloadui or /camp; you quickly realize that this is on their end.

Funny how they release this BS before Memorial Day Weekend and then the lot of them take off for the weekend. Leaving the majority high and dry. Typical.

I've seen the extensive thread that got created of the errors and stealth changes (unintended or not) all because of this patch. I keep thinking to myself that if only they did this patch in small bits, would we have the same issues?

So, is the problem related to DirectX11?
  • eyeless71_ESO
@Mablung Make sure that you are not running in compatibility mode. If you are running it as XP SP2 or SP3, it could be that it doesn't support DX11 so it's forcing it back to DX9. I turned off my compatibility mode and then forced DX11 as suggested and I could finally see the ghosts in Fort Virak.

I am enjoying this game a lot, but as someone who likes to do an immersive play and do screenarchery every now and then, this is quite breaking. I understand, though, there's more pertinent issues like not being able to play at all, so it would suffice for me to know that this issue is actually being acknowledged at least, and a solution will be provided through a future patch. But I see no info regarding this particular matter anywhere.

Edit: The temporary DX11 workaround provided is working and it even improved the stuttering I was experiencing outdoors. Playing for the most part of an hour without issues. Thanks!

This change did not work for me! I have tried the repair tool, the .txt change (with no compatibility selected and changing to D3D11 - however, it still reverts back to D3D9 on log in?? I play the game on Ultra-high settings with very smooth performance, except the ghosts change since the patch. Any advice?

Well, Changed it to D11 after I saw the suggestion earlier today.
Worked like a charm, even removed the choppiness I was experiencing after the last patch.
Anyhow, been playing all day, didn't get a single crash or dc.

    Cheers!

I've found a temporary fix for this issue, assuming you have a DX11 compatible card.
I had actually set my game to DX9 to test out SMAA (still doesn't work), and was surprised to find forcing it to DX11 in UserSettings seems to fix it.

    itWg5GC.jpg
    • Navigate to " C:\Users\YOURUSER\Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live" (or liveeu if you play on EU megaserver)
    • open "UserSettings.txt"
    • search (Crtl+F) for "SET GraphicsDriver.7"
    • change D3D9 to D3D11

If your card is not DX11 compatible you can also try "OpenGL" but, at least on my system, it takes a massive performance hit.

Yeah this didn't work for me, more than likely because I am still using XP ( yeah I know stone age now) and DX9 is as high as I can go so DX11 isn't an option for me. It used to work just fine before the update so hopefully they can get this issue resolved soon.

Double CONFIRMED, This fix worked on my card (changed settings to D11 vs D9). As stated, doubtful this works on non-DX11 compatible cards.
    @Willock: great work!

What operating system do you use? Is your video card DX11 compatible?

Make sure that the game is not running in XP compatibility mode also if you are not using XP as your OS.

Many NVIDIA users cannot run DX11 due to the black screen bug we've had since day one. We have to set it to DX9 or every few seconds the screen goes black and we crash. So ZOS anything else I can do so I can see ghosts and other transparent enemies because I had to do a quest this morning and could not see ONE enemy! They could see me for sure.....

NOTE: I tried DX11 for as long as I could stay in the game and the ghosts were still transparent. Then I had the lovely black screen crash and went back to DX9 so that isn't the issue. Something changed with the update and ZOS needs to figure out a fix for it. I can run all other games I play using DX11 and have no issues. I spent the entire first "free" week of play down due to the DX bug and finally found that forcing it to run at DX9 would allow me to play. My card is DX11 compat and can more than handle it and I run Windows 7 Ultimate.

Try posting up your system specs here. Maybe someone can offer a work around or some insight as to why your system and others like yours are not working correctly.

For those using NVIDIA cards, a new driver was released today (5/26) - check to see if you use the GeForce driver, and if you do, installing that may help.

that black screen crash is caused by a combination of directx 11, nvidia drivers and wddm 1.1 (1.3 if ur using win8) and is called TDR. microsoft and nvidia will blame each other for it and have been doing so since dx11 release but reality is they are both a bunch of incompetent morons that cant code for ***. its a common problem with dx11 games and not really related to eso. tho smart devs know this and dont offer dx11 support in the first place for that reason. especially not in an mmo. i could now go ahead and explain exactly what a TDR is but u can just read that up on one of the various threads that fill the first 200 pages on nvidia tech forums. (yep it is really this bad)

Can confirm that changing to dx11 worked in regards to transparent ghost npcs. Using a Radeon HD 7850, Windows 8.1, 12gb ram.

Have experienced some weird ui issues with certain dialogue menus needing to be reloaded, but am unsure if that is related to dx11 or a different cause all together. Have not had any crashes or other graphical anomalies, but the character I was playing is still in the starter island.

I switched to dx11 and it fixes the transparent problem, but dx11 has been unstable for me since launch and crashes with a memory leak every time after about 15 min of gaming. So to play I have to switch back to dx9.

    i7-4770k, Radeon 7990, Windows 8.1, 32gb ram

Funny thing is the same problem also happens on my gaming laptop which runs a nvidia.

Same graphics issue here as well plus after playing for an hour or two if I enter a brightly lighted area I near white out, if I then get inside a building or cave things return to normal. When exiting ESO I have twice gotten a mssg asking did I want to reset my desktop color scheme. WFT is up with that? ESO is only game/app to have ever generated that mssg.

Drivers are updated. I have even completely uninstalled then installed not only the game but my graphics card. Still getting the issues. Never had a single graphics issue before last patch.

I was running a pair of R9 290x w/4GB. When I pulled the installed again I only installed one of the cards to see if XFire was the problem....it is NOT the problem.

The fix has worked for me and I have not had any memory leaks or crashes.

    System specs:
AMD FX 8350 8 core processor 4.0 ghz
    GeForce GTX 680 video card
    8 GB of Ram
    Win 7 64 bit OS

Like everyone else, I had no issues prior to the patch. It seems that they changed their optimization from DX11 to DX9 and failed to tell anyone or at least to implement a drop down option in settings as to what is preferred by the end user. This option is something seen in all new MMOs now and is another example of poor game design.
