How do I stop spam coming to my forums inbox?

I am brand new to the game only started last week so please forgive me if this sounds noobish but I really don't know what to do. Gold spammers have started to send me messages in my forums account advertising gold. I see it in zone chat everyday and ignore it. I get sometimes the same garbage in game via notifications. Now I am getting it on the forums too? Is there a way to filter out unwanted messages? Can I make it so only friends can send me messages? If so I have no clue how to set that up. I still find that managing my forum account is cumbersome as there are not many options to change or set. Am I missing something or is it that restricted for a purpose? I do hope someone can give me some advice on what to do.

OK I see the posting now that says they are restricting private messages on the forums till 9:30EDT. Good that's a good start. I still would like to be able to filter my own messages though when they turn it back on.

You can change your notifications by going here and selecting Notification Preferences on the left menu bar. This allows you to adjust when you get a forum notification (popup) and when you get emails. It's possible to fully disable either by un-checking all of the categories.
