Do enemies ever get interesting to fight?

So maybe this is a dumb/noob way to play the game but I'm playing through the game on 1 character of each faction right now. Because I just can't progress on one character only I get bored of them too fast so I have to switch it up by playing my other characters. So I'm playing like all the base game zones, on each character. It's taking a very long time which normally I would not mind at all, except for one problem. It's becoming boring.

The stories change, the environments change, the music changes, I can customize my characters and skill sets to how I want it and it's fun - but the enemies aren't changing... like, at all.

The mobs I was fighting in Bleakrock Isle use the exact same fighting techniques as the enemies that I'm encountering in The Rift - the 7th zone that I'm progressing in so far on my EP character. They're just... it's all the same. Literally.

You go into a delve, and there's a pack of 3 mobs. One of them is a caster, two of them are melee. Or 2 casters 1 melee. Or 1 caster, 1 "rogue", and 1 warrior. And the caster ALWAYS runs off 20 feet away and tries to cast some heal, or summon something. Or the archer ALWAYS runs off and tries to do a cone attack. Literally every pack is like this.

And that's it. That's the combat variety you get in ESO at least in my experience. It's sapping all the the enjoyment out of exploration. Oh hey a cool new cave to explore! ... Oh right, it has the exact same enemies in it as the last 80 that I did.

Is the WHOLE game like this? Or does it finally start to get some variety when I get to the DLC zones? I 100%'d Summerset but it was months ago and I honestly don't remember if the enemy tactics were the same there, but maybe that tells you all you need to know lol, it wasn't memorable.

Have you done any dungeons ?
Thats where mechanics become more fun - and then theres trials

dungeons, arenas, infinite archive, trials and some world bosses are where mechanics kick in and there are where it gets more challenging and you have to actually watch out for things that can wipe you 1 shot, for overworld you can crank diffuculty up.

95% of overland content is blend because its mmo.

Most MMOs nowadays have ridiculously easy combat because people constantly complained about difficulty forcing you to group, so now they're veered in the other direction of everything being made of ice cream so you can do most content solo. If you want difficulty or more mechanics, you could turn your overland difficulty up, or you could go do vet dungeons and trials.

World Bosses are another one where there are mechanics that can one shot you, but usually you can just brute force them with a guildie or two. Group content is really where mechanics start to matter, and as someone said above, Infinite Archive and Arenas (which Arenas are solo, I don't remember if IA can be played with friends)

Honestly, I don't mind how easy the game is in overland, I played with higher difficulty, and it was fun, but I want to get from quest to quest fast, especially multi part ones with a lot of backtracking WITHOUT having to fight 15 different rare mobs and 30 goons (Looking at you SWTOR putting a gold mob at every turn)

Specifically veteran dungeons, though. Normal Dungeons you can do in 5 minutes with a good group, 10-15 with a regular one, sometimes you might get *that kind of player* that leaves because you're taking too long, or a player that runs past all the trash to pull the mobs, I don't know why they're in such a rush. And if you want to do the dungeon quests, run them with a guild group if you can, don't go with randos

There are very few effects on the npc/monsters you fight from the skills you cast. Mechanics are more visible on higher difficulty and in dungeons/ trials.

Yes basic fighting is very dull. They just fall over. If you lucky into a pile of ash or ice.

Well, in my opinion not really. There are those that disagree above, but this is exactly what I meant when I said that the difficulty in the game was disappointing.

They increased the damage and made enemies HP sponges, but that is not actual difficulty versus having variable enemy design and encounters which is probably what you mean and want to experience.

And if that is, the answer is not really. For the most part combat in PvE is extremely static and lacks a dynamic component which is why combat is one of the top complained about things in this game when you leave these forums and ask why people didn't or don't like ESO.

Sure you haven't gone to all the bosses or dungeons / trials, but in time even they will become just another static encounter. Again, some might say that's how MMOs go , but is it really or are we just excusing it here and in the MMOs that offer only a static experience?

The dungeons, trials, etc have much more mechanics. All though trash packs generally don't have a ton of variety outside of bigger enemies.

You may want to increase the difficulty so you can least experience the difference mechanics that the trash packs do offer. Because they're buried under the low damage.

a while back to get to be able to get to craglorn on your own to solo those places was a big task also sometimes it took big guild groups to do any public dungeons, times change but i never had that problem they all seemed different
over the years not a power creep but a power lightning formula F1 breakneck bolt occured imbues everyone with extreme amonts of power and now thats what you likely get, first it was called adjustments then it was called subclassing now not sure
an examplae not to stary too far from the topic though so last thing, past = 50k dps you are womcome to an end game trial group present= 150k dps may or may not cut it depending on your class

Have you started on some Undaunted pledges or DLC world boss dailies? Maelstrom Arena? Infinite Archive? Some Undaunted pledges can be soloed, Maj's can even if you're low CP (the first ones, like FG1 or BC1). DLC world boss dailies can give you some good rewards too, like furnishing plans or motif pages.

Overland and delves are designed to be easy and, dare I say it, relaxing. You can turn up the difficulty for overland but that doesn't introduce new mechanics, you'd need to do the more combat-focused content for that.

The dlc dungeons are more challenging to fight on solo builds and are a lot more fun for me than playing normally, although I do enjoy tanking and hardcore content for those occasionally.

But I prefer challenge content solo or at best with a duo, it reminds me of elden ring sometimes, almost. I am hoping these solo dungeon instances for later newer content they have get to be closer to that

There are some new enemy types introduced in later zones that have different attacks than what you see in the basegame, but there is a limited amount of those and they begin to get repetitive, too.

What difficulty are you playing on? As others have pointed out, you do at least see more of the attacks (and have to react to them) if playing on the higher difficulties.

Because people have different tastes. Some people prefer to solo dungeons because they enjoy the solo challenge, or they want to go at their own pace without others rushing/slowing them down, or some combination thereof, or possibly even some other reasons.

Yes, on the lowest difficulty, the solo dungeons are basically base overland difficulty and can be completed by anyone who can do overland on Adventurer.

    It's becoming boring.

Overland is for questing. It doesn't have challenging combat. You can nowadays turn up the Challenge from the character menu (press C for character menu and then on the top left-hand side there's a selection) but I find that a bit boring. It just makes you take more damage and deal less damage.

You won't find much mechanics overland - and I count delves and public dungeons into this. In some public dungeons you do have some challenge at first, but even that goes away when your combat skills improve.

If you want mechanics and challenges, start creating a build and go to more demanding content.

Check what type of role you want to play and start farming sets for it. In the beginning, especially on normal difficulty the build doesn't matter and you won't learn many mechanics. But keep farming. You can start farming pretty much any set so there's no need to farm a beginner set, then intermediate and finally the end game set. You can start with any set pretty much immediately.

Then, once you start going to veteran arenas, dungeons and trials, that's where the challenge begins. Mechanics become more important and on hard modes you actually have to pay attention to the mechanics.

Undaunted pledges are a good starting point. And daily random dungeons.

    Here's a summary I wrote.

But basically, the story mode is so easy that even without a proper build you can just run through it.
I tested the story mode with NB, no class mastery, no arena weapons, no mythics, no scribing, 3.7k weapon damage (unbuffed), badly selected skills (no major brutality, 2 execute skills, for example), crafted sets - Order+Hunding+2pc Druid - Purple weapons, blue jewelry. No buff food, no potions. Playing sloppy, not paying attention to LA-weaving. Still, the most time consuming parts were the hunt phases of Tarcyr and Balorgh.

You just started this game a couple weeks ago. Maybe try playing it.

I began in 2024 where I played for 3 months. Then in 2026 I came back and it's been 4 months I think. So I've been playing about 6 months.

I also played when the game first launched but that was so long ago I don't even consider that as a relevant part of my history with this game lol

I am not sure that simply increasing the difficulty is going to do what I want. I already play on Seasoned. I could turn it up to Master but why? The only thing it does is make health pools bigger while making mine lower. Okay I have actually dodge, so? The enemies are still doing all the same stuff.

the though of a game designer thinking i would run through MoS alone unhinges me lol
please atleast tell me these places are going to be a cakewalk compared to the real ones

Still, the most time consuming parts were the hunt phases of Tarcyr and Balorgh.

alright so that sounds cake walky, i may not be put off the idea now but still MoS on my own :( hope theres no good stuff hidden behind having to go still

It's not. You want (veteran) arenas, dungeons and trials. And then veteran hard mode dungeons and trials. They have more mechanics and the higher the difficulty, the more they matter.

Start with normal arenas, dungeons and trials, and then advance to veteran and finally to hard modes and trifectas.

There are mechanics you don't see because the enemy is dead too quickly if you're not on the higher difficulties.

Seasoned is basically just a gimme for the achievements to people who prefer the easier difficulties. It's barely any different.

I think a lot of people here are missing the OP's point.

They're not concerned about the difficulty, or whether monsters have mechanics to watch out for. Their issue is more the lack of variety in monster encounter behavior. The OP's observation is that regardless how it's dressed up, every fight encounter seems to play out the same as all the others.

And at the questing/overland level, the OP isn't entirely wrong.

As you get into the DLC zones, you will start to see different mob types.

Remember that all of the basegame mobs were made 12 years ago. You're up against 12 years of improvement in how things run. The stories and mobs in the basegame zones are extremely dull in comparison to the bosses and even mobs from the DLC zones since they have made things more interesting over time.

If you're intent on going in order, you will end up with a lot of copypasted mobs until you get further along the chain. Morrowind is where you start to meet more interesting mob types and mechanics in story bosses.
(Unfortunately, that's also where the writing quality went the other direction. Wrothgar is generally considered the pinnacle of the writing here, and the Morrowind-Clockwork-Summerset arc. But after that, the writing begins a steady decline to whatever this Sheogorath nonsense was)
