Necro mains in shambles, probably won't see that rework until 2028 or 29. Be sure to check on them.

I mean Necro is in the best place it's been in years, I'm doing great

They’re still relatively rough in PvP.

Not really, just requires a higher skill cap than before. Not the same thing as not being viable.

Really happy you're still with us, Nick.

Was really looking forward to resub for the Warden and Sorc refreshes later this year, so I'm sad to see them getting pushed to 2027. Thrilled to see 3-sided BGs returning pretty soon, though. For now, I'm just glad to have a new roadmap and some assurance for the continuation of the game.

Since we are not getting a warden refresh and DK has been the only class to get one for this long, can we please get some sort of balance changes around DK? It is far and away the best class in PvP environments.

Mostly disappointing news, but not unexpected news. Still, better than the information vacuum of the past three or four weeks. One of the advantages of having been around for a lot of years is developing patience, so refreshes, Trials, Update 52, Night Market, and whatnot get here when they get here.

My enjoyment of the game does not depend on the level of my anticipation for the arrival of future stuff, but I'll admit to some serious grumbles about being stuck with the DK and WW refreshes continuing to rule the roost for the next several months. I'm not sure what any "interim options" for the other classes might entail, but they probably do not involve bringing those two down to the level of the rest. I have one DK and I've never liked WW as a mechanic, so bunches of characters left hanging for a while. I must admit to strong urges of wanting to use Leane Luseph to feed my hunger and maybe have a small slice of Nilthis for dessert. I can only play the game I have, but I try to make my fantasies satisfying.

Notable absence from Nick's message is anything regarding crossplay. It makes no nevermind to me as I'm a PC kinda guy, but it's a topic of high salience for many. Y'all will do as y'all will do and stuff gets here when it does. I have no plans to jump ship over any of it.

It is really difficult to be enthusiastic about a new pvp zone when class balance in pvp has been an afterthought for so long. Bgs are dominated by DK and WW, smallscaling in cyro is similar, no reason not to expect the same issues to pop up in the new map.

I appreciate the communication being shared here, even while I am disappointed especially about the class reworks.

On the matter of transparency, I’d really love if you could share some of the struggles you’re experiencing with the warden refresh. Based on the original timelines, this class should have been ready for PTS release before the layoffs happened. I much prefer quality and polish over strict timelines, so if it needs to be delayed it should be delayed. That said, it’d be interesting to hear about some of the challenges the team has faced with this one. Personally, I find warden the most mishmashed of the classes thematically so just that alone I’d imagine would be a hurdle!

Well, it's a fancy way of saying we'll mostly get some qol changes and some events for the next 6 months.

It's really disheartening.. As many said, the priority should be the class rework.

Why I should I be caring about a new solo dungeon if playing my class doesn't feel rewarding because it take YEARS to rework some skills in a videogame?

Of course, you can blame the layoffs but taking this long is absolutely inexcusable with the amount of people still working at zenimax.

Not gonna lie.. If I were aware of some of these changes, there's a chance I may not have purchased Season One Premium pass.

And why are people assuming the reworks AREN'T a top priority? Just because things are taking longer doesn't mean they aren't focusing on things, but people also seem to think everyone working in a game studio can just be thrown onto X thing or Y thing. That's not how it works, though. The people who design levels would not be able to work on balancing. The people who work on art would not know coding. I'm sure there ARE people who could be moved to the team working on the refreshes, but they can't reroute everyone to working on a single thing.

Yes, people trying to suggest that “hurr durr get the community managers on bugfixes” do not have a clue what they are talking about. But it is equally naïve to pretend that there are some things releasing that are not affecting getting the Refreshes.

Brian Wheeler is the “Combat and PvP Lead,” and that is the team that is working on the refreshes. As such, it is reasonable to consider that the team splitting their time between reworking Warden and modifying Vengeance means they are not splitting their time between reworking Warden and reworking Sorc. As such, Sorc is waiting on the backburner instead of Vengeance waiting on the backburner.

This was the whole reason behind the utter fury about the surprise Vengeance test. Why, when we had no news on the reworks, was the Combat team doing yet another Vengeance test when it was working fine. And now, I assume someone will be analyzing those results and coming up with future tests… instead of putting that energy towards the other 6 Reworks. The team really needs to come out with a statement: “We will allow Vengeance and Grey Host to exist as is until the Refreshes are done. After that, we will continue our testing and analysis.”

I’ll offer a personal thing: I’m sure everyone knows that the thing I want most for this game is a new Class. But even as much as I want an 8th Class, releasing that before Classes 2-7 get their Refreshes just seems like a strange series of priorities. I know that a new Class being made would directly affect how quickly the other Classes would get refreshed because it’s the same team working on it.

The Combat Team is also heavily investing in the Jerall PvP zone. I am still thinking that is splitting their time when they could do Refreshes in parallel which would affect more players, but the PvP community has gotten nothing new since… BGs in Morrowind? So I am more willing to give that a pass.

Still, if the argument is “well the Team can do more than one thing at once!”, why are we not assuming they could do multiple Refreshes at the same time so they get done faster? Again, the Class Refreshes are waiting for something else.

As for the other additions, QoL and Rumors and the Nowhere Vault really have little to do with Combat, so it’s sensible that the other teams could do them while the Combat team focuses on Refreshes. But the solo Dungeons… we know that there is an overlap there in the form of the new sets: Mylenne and Tarcyr are getting monster helms. That means they get proc effects. And that means the Combat Team, instead of designing a new skill for a Class Refresh, designed the monster procs. And then of course the Art Team got to make those proc effects, instead of making skill effects for the Refresh.

So it is not completely unreasonable to think that nothing they’re putting out had any effect on Warden’s Refresh or any of those to come. And with the Combat team being as bad at communicating as they are, we can only speculate… but they have not given us a reason to assume that the Refreshes are their foremost priority; from what we have seen, it more seems like Vengeance is their priority.

I agree with everyone that it was a /huge/ mistake to not make the Class Refreshs's the priority here. No one would rather have Solo Dungeons then class refreshes. No one would rather have 'rumors' or more 'dynamic encounters' then class refreshes.

I would rather have other stuff than the class refreshes. But that's because I don't PvP or do trials, and I stick to normal dungeons. Not saying that class refreshes aren't important for a lot of people, just that they aren't for me, so "No one" is an overstatement. I can understand the disappointment for those who do PvP and do vet stuff.

Not unexpected, especially class reworks. Sadly it seems like those are no major priority despite clear community backing.
I'll be honest the current pvp balance could be fixed with some numbers changes, and frankly with the reworks so far apart, I hope the team feels free to make the necessary adjustments.
The current pvp meta is extremely unbalanced and unfun.

I’d have them indefinitely sideline vengeance and postpone Jerall just to get another class rework and buffs to class masteries for underperforming classes there, this year.

With that being said, I’m personally also willing to wait and I am understanding of the situation at hand. I just happen to know many that aren’t as like-minded.

@ZOS_Kevin regarding the letter and the "rewarding time"...

Trust me, there is nothing rewarding in the time we spend right now farming nowhere keys which can't be used until months from now, or elusive gems for that new mythic, or plainly wasting time waiting for the dynamic event to happen. The repeated daily quests for the Summerset new furnishings, are also not fun to do a 1000th time. The favors fetch quests didn't add anything to the quality of time we spend in the game.

I would really address the wasted time waiting for things to happen, like DE, and avoid objectives where people have to compete for a delve boss kill or spawn point (trove, chest etc), which cause more wasted time and frustration.

Reading the letter, the perspective is cloudy and uncertain. We read the same words from the previous leads who didn't even get to implement much of their vision. Things were moving slowly before the layoffs, now with half of the staff is clear the updates will be even smaller and slower. I am really sorry for the studio.

1 rework a year will hammer the final nails in the coffin in for the balance of the game.

As it stands - at the bare minimum we need class masteries removed from reworked classes, as well remove WW ability to benefit from non-WW class masteries. Class masteries were introduced as a way to bridge the gap between reworked and unreworked classes, so it makes absolutely no sense to give them to the reworked classes, further raising their power floor.

Yes, Class Masteries need to be disabled for every class that has been reworked until the moment every class has been reworked.

This would be one bandaid yes. I honestly don’t know how they intend to keep players engaged, though. And negative online sentiment tends to multiply once it starts.

Good to hear the new PVP zone is releasing in January, that is at least something to look forward to. Fingers crossed it is well designed and worthwhile to participate in.

Hearing the news about the reworks is tragic, and has serious implications for the future of the game. These reworks NEED to be the number one priority for the studio. The game is currently in an unfinished state where DK and WW are so far ahead of everything that it isn't even fun to think about playing other classes. Delaying these reworks is going to SERIOUSLY harm your playerbase in both the short and long term.

Between this and the trials being delayed, it really feels like the studio is signing off on ESO's endgame. Sad to see, especially since it had felt like the game was on an upwards trajectory for the first time ever this year.
Why are we dooming when the letter literally states the game isn't going into maintenance mode? What about a delay to make sure something is done right mean they're "signing off" on anything? Would you rather them push out something before it's actually ready just so it can be said that it was released, the state of it be damned? The letter also states plainly they're looking into other ways to do stuff in the meantime, but we just ignore that part to make it seem like they're completely ignoring anything to do with Classes for now, I suppose.

Because the ‘next’ refresh is coming at least a year after the first if not longer. “Priority”, reasonably, would be dropping all the fluff between now and then and actually releasing the classes, patch after patch, in order until complete. The game is literally incomplete at the moment, with one class visually and mechanically head and shoulders above the rest. We have a decade of content for the game already. It hardly needs more at this very instant.
The letter said the next refresh is being aimed at for next year. That could be in January or February for all we know, they never said it wouldn't be until Spring or later. Just because they mentioned next year does not inherently mean mid or late year, it can also mean early.

And again, they cannot put everyone on a single project. Different people work on different things for a reason. They CANNOT realistically move a bunch of people onto one thing because not everyone is going to have the skills or experience to DO that thing. Also there's the whole "too many cooks" thing where having more hands on a project can actually make it take a lot longer to be completed and make things more complicated the more people there are that need to communicate and agree on things.

Okay. So obviously you can’t put the people in charge of the crown store or marketing on the class rework and expect efficiency. But—and I’ve been to ZOS HQ btw—you certainly have buckets of programmers, graphic designers, model and vfx asset designers, sound techs, bug testers, that are likely spread across multiple projects that should be focussing only on the class rework until it is complete. If you’re an environmental artist, you can probably get to work on refreshing the zones that we’ve already started and will probably not resume until who knows when.I don’t know why I need to clarify the obvious, but when I say everyone, I mean everyone that can possibly work on a specific task given their skillset.

That is not how game development (or by that metric, any software development) works. Brooks's Law applies fully here. Throwing more people at a project does not magically make it go faster. You might be familiar with the "too many cooks spoil the broth" and "nine women cannot make a baby in one month" concepts.

"Programmer" isn't one interchangeable job. Engine coders, network engineers, UI developers, and tools engineers don't work on combat balance or ability scripting. Taking a network engineer out of their domain of expertise and tasking them with combat design and balance is a recipe for disaster.

Even for creative roles, 3D modeling, effects, animation, and sound design all require the underlying combat design for the class reworks to be finalized first. The pipeline is sequential: combat design > concept art > modeling and animation > VFX and audio > QA and tuning. Throwing a fleet of sound techs and VFX artists at a class rework before the combat design is complete just either leaves those artists idle or churning out unusable assets. Besides, Brooks's Law still applies: having too many different VFX artists working on the same class rework risks delivering a mismatched visual identity with vastly different VFX styles on each ability.

Beyond these pipeline constraints, the demand to halt everything else just for class reworks and "idk environment artists can just do zone refreshes in the meantime" just completely ignores the rest of the playerbase. Yes, class reworks should still be a priority, but to completely abandon all other content, seasonal events, and balance updates that other players are excited about is objectively a terrible idea.

Be realistic. They just pushed out the 2nd class rework to an undisclosed point in 2027, and it likely isn't going to be in the January update based on the information we received with the new roadmap. That means that we're looking at over one year between the first and second class reworks, possibly closer to 1.5 years.

If you think that pace is representative of them "prioritizing" the class reworks, I just don't know what to say to you. The game will not survive long enough to see the reworks completed, not in a meaningful way anyways.

I'm not calling for unrelated employees such as artists to drop everything to switch to working on combat - that is an absurd thing to suggest, and I'm unsure how you derived that from what I posted. But there certainly will be content released that is worked on by the same teams responsible for the class reworks, which could be de-prioritized in favor of expediting those reworks. The vengeance work for example seems like something that should have already been shelved long ago for this purpose, and I'm sure there are various animators working on other aspects who instead could be focused on the reworked class animations.

If you play this game for endgame PVP/PVM, these updates are the number one most important thing to you. The game's balance is literally in an unfinished state now, and will remain that way for the foreseeable future - possibly as long as the next 6 years if the current pace is to be expected moving forward. Trial and new dungeon content being delayed means that in addition to this awful balance we now have to suffer, endgame PVE players have literally nothing to look forward to. The studio knows this, they aren't blind. If they continue pumping out overland-story driven content, short time events/minigames, things like nightmarket, vengeance tests, etc while the reworks and PVE content remain delayed - that is effectively them signing off on ESO's endgame.

You feel as you feel on those, and I'm mostly in agreement on that last bit on the waits for DEs, but it does make me question why anyone would spend time farming something which has no use for another six to eight weeks. Is it "having for the sake of having" or is there something I'm missing in there?

For the gems, Rumors (Gem of Dececption) and the Vault (Gem of Cunning) aren't coming until Update 51, so there's nothing which can be farmed aside from the Gem of Agility (DEs) and the Gem of Stealth is a guaranteed drop from a story quest so that's a one-and-done per character, pretty much like the Talisman itself.

This would be one bandaid yes. I honestly don’t know how they intend to keep players engaged, though. And negative online sentiment tends to multiply once it starts.

I think you'll find that the game’s current trajectory and timeline is—to use your phrasing—a “terrible idea” and if you've been around MMORPGs for any length of time you can see that the writing is now on the wall. The developer letter didn't assuage anyone’s fears and that should be evident from this thread and I'm sure the many videos to come from the usual commentators. Regardless of the complexities of reassigning workloads, which to be fair, you know as little about the inner workings of ZOS’s particular production pipeline as I do, it should be further evident that this game is not going to be in a place anytime soon where it is functional or satisfying to a broad portion of the player base. Nor will it be competitive. Each of these issues in isolation is a problem. Both of them synonymously is a crisis. And essentially telling your player base to wait until next year to continue and not even complete a feature that fundamentally affects every aspect of combat related gameplay is simply asking too much from an already exhausted player base.

Best of luck to those who stick around. I don't feel the need to continue this, because without getting into specifics that would sound accusatory or overly critical there's really just nothing else to say.

When the terms "aimed" or "targeted" are used, it's because there's an inherent possiblity they can miss entirely. Especially given that it was followed up with "However, we are discussing some interim options" which alludes to band-aid solutions just in case.
Yes, "aiming" for something does mean it's possible it might not happen in that time frame. But at the same time, acting like we've been told for sure that it will be "at least a year if not longer" for the next rework is silly. They didn't give us a concrete time frame for it, so why decide to automatically assume it's going to take a bunch of time it may not? I know the whole "hope for the best but expect the worst" thing, but it just seems strange me to to assume it will take that long when nothing really indicated HOW far into 2027 they're "aiming" for.

And would you prefer no "bandaid" fixes at all? It's like ZOS is damned if they do, damned if they don't. Don't work on something to help the balance between Classes, get yelled at for being lazy or not understanding the game or not caring or whatever. Do work on something to help in the meantime, and it gets treated like it's just an excuse or them trying to do the bare minimum.

As it stands - at the bare minimum we need class masteries removed from reworked classes, as well remove WW ability to benefit from non-WW class masteries. Again, that is NOT how it works. You LITERALLY cannot expect people who work in completely different departments to all know enough about OTHER departments for there to be a meaningful number of people to be taken and reallocated. And a lot of these people would need previous work to be done before they could even start on their portion of it anyway. How are bug testers going to test anything until there's something to test? Are they just supposed to sit there and do absolutely no other work in the meantime? There are steps to making things, you cannot realistically expect everything to somehow be worked on at the same time or for people and teams to genuinely be that interchangeable on a whim.

Also you being to ZOS HQ doesn't mean much of anything in this regard. Genuinely no offense but it's a moot point entirely. You don't know how much any individual working there knows about any given part of game development, how many people are left on each team, or anything like that. Being to a place and knowing intimately how it operates are two ENTIRELY different things.

Yes, there are going to be things that the Class rework gets work/input from multiple teams on. Obviously anything related to combat is going to be touched by the Combat team. But that doesn't mean ALL of the Combat team needs to focus on Class reworks and nothing else like Dungeons or Trials or new Overland things. I mean the Trial that was coming is also being delayed, which could mean the people that were focusing on that have been moved towards Class reworks, or some of them at least.

And like I mentioned before, things get made in stages. The people who do animations or sound effects can't work on that stuff until they people who are coming up with reworked skill have something to give that team. They can't just sit around doing nothing while waiting for other stages of the rework to get done first. QA can't sit around doing nothing waiting for the first iteration of things to get passed to THEM. Entirely halting other projects, systems, or content for ONE thing would be more detrimental to the game than just running like how they normally do.

And again, any particular thing also can't have a bunch of people thrown at it in hopes of it getting done faster because "too many cooks". The more people you have working on something, the longer it takes to get done and the more complicated and convoluted it becomes as more and more people need to communicate X or Y on it and come to agreements or compromises on how this or that should be/work/look/etc. More hands on deck does NOT always mean things getting done faster.

All that said, there is something I have an issue with and don't understand:

    statement.png

Why are we being told things we knew were coming since last PTS, since WAY before the layoffs and everything, are being released for our "patience"? Literally none of this was stuff that was come up with AFTER the layoffs and in light of things being delayed, except MAYBE for the 3-team BGs coming back? Though I doubt that, it's also probably been something in the works since before the layoffs.

Why was content we already knew for months was coming (most of it anyway) now being marketed as something that's being released/added as as a thank you? It doesn't make any sense.

Does that mean that cross play has been cancelled? There was not one word about it in the letter.

Was never meant to be coming this year so I guess they didn't mention it simply because of that.
