Skill not firing in PvP - Why only in ESO?

I know this is the oldest tale in the book. But I am seeing a lot more communcation between the devs and players recently so I want to bring this up again:

Why is skill not firing/packet loss such a big problem in ESO? much much worse than GW2 which also has large scale PvP battles
Another thing I've noticed is when I'm light attack weaving, sometimes my character would literally get stuck in the light attack animation and it would cause the subsequent skills I press to not fire, which is a typical packet loss issue and it ruins PvP experience.
Can any dev please confirm you are aware of this issue in 2026 and/or are trying to fix it somehow? You have talked about the smaller cyrodiil plan but that is far away and from my experience in IC, this issue doesn't get fundamentally better just because server pop or map size is smaller. In fact, skills still not fire even in midnight down time cyrodiil

Yeah general jank / lag is fairly common in ESO PvP and has been for years.
    • Sometimes when you weapon swap there is a weirdly long delay, which if you're mid fight can really screw you over as you're pressing buttons assuming certain skills will be going off, when instead you're using completely different skills because the of the bar swap delay.
    • Recently I've noticed issues with CC break. With CC break not triggering for a long delay after being CC'd, despite immediately pressing it. Or CC breaking, and then getting CC'd again very soon after, even when you should be immune.
    • Roll dodge so much of the time. The enemy player either hasn't started their roll dodge on my client, but it still tells me they dodged my skill, or the enemy player has already finished their roll dodge on my client, but the game still tells me they dodged.

You could copy and paste that post and put it here and no one would know.

Large scale fast multiplayer is just hard to pull off well. I want them to fix it too, but it’s not an ESO specific issue.

One day I hope some game studio pulls off fast, large scale, complex, cheat free, and performant PvP all at once. It would really be a huge feat and it would set the standard for many future games.

love the roll dodge thing, especially when the player roll dodges and game still consumes my molten whip stacks

Also just want to point out the light attack animation being stuck/janky thing isnt exclusive to PvP. Whatever it is it's causing huge issues for weaving in PvP and PvE, I've noticed it really starts getting bad when you have 150+ ping, like if you are playing from SEA/Oceania or an NA player playing on EU, you will notice your light attack animations are incredibly janky compared to sub-100 ping

I do not PvP but this behavior is not limited to PvP. This happens in Overland and dungeons, too. I was unable to play at all yesterday (June 28, 2026 Sunday) as all keyboard inputs by me failed to register in the game a few seconds after initial login.

I do hope that the maintenance and update that is happening while I write this fixes these problems. But I won't hold my breath.

I see most people using Flame Lash in BGs over Molten, probably because it's an AOE and therefor ignores dodge.

Yep. If I received a dime from ZOS for every time I press a skill button and never fires in pve with my character just standing there doing nothing, I'd make a dent on the balance sheet. Happens in both circumstances but in PvP, happens more often for sure. Could be my ping that sits around 190-230ms most of the times but it's also been like this when I was in the US. New anim reworks kind of make the issue worse at times.

Like, I cannot weave and perform skills as werewolf fluidly at times as one of the attacks will never go off and break my char.

It's not limited to PVP. I've had this issue for years in PVE - overland, dungeons, trials, whatever. Given this has gone on for so long, I'm not confident they can fix it or even believe that it's their issue.

No other game I play has this issue. I mainly play GW2 and it's just a more reliable experience. The skills are fluid, they respond regardless of whatever's going on at my ISP or the game itself.

It is true that GW2 has better performance than ESO. The main difference here is that ESO has much better pace than other games. For example in GW2 you can register a skill every 1 sec. In ESO GCD is also 1 sec but you can register stuff like block, sprint or some proc sets etc in shorter intervals, like 0.1 - 0.3 sec. There are also skills that work similar to that fashion (like Bound Armaments with 0.3 sec). And also movement speed is really crazy in ESO. That is probably having an extra load on the servers, as well, since the positions of the players should be communicated in shorter intervals, as they are changing so rapidly.

I wouldn't mind seeing some speed nerfs. I'm speaking mostly in terms of toon movement speed, not attack speed, but maybe in some cases attack speed could be slowed slightly too, if it would mean better performance overall.

Breaking free and barswap are the most annoying things and the delay when your health ist still at 50% and you're suddenly dead.

    Atm it's really bad.

The problem is until it is tolerated by players, it does not worth to change anything, just loss of money, and many players will not even feel the difference, so why to be bothered? Many games updated server side to the best (or sometimes worse like CS2), but ESO neve announced these changes. They updated client side multiple times in last updates, probably because they finally hired senior FX developer as vacancy disappeared. They prefer to make new things like Vengeance or small scale Cyro from what they have now than update server side and calculation logic because it would only require rearranging existing stuff and not developing new.

You're not wrong, but I'm not sure they could directly attribute a player decline to these issues. They'd have to explore that with surveys and whatever, and even then, it's hard to come to that conclusion. The combat system's long been a sticking point for the game's detractors. Maybe that general sentiment's influenced their decision to update the classes.

I love this game, but as many others have said this is not limited to pvp. ESO struggles intensely and the engine it runs on feels a generation behind other MMOs. It's still a ton of fun to play and I've sunk a lot of time and money into it over the years, but I also play other MMOs of similar age and....man...the difference is stark

This issue affects everywhere in the game, not just PvP. Essentially, what happens is whenever you do an input, it sends it to the server to get queued. When the server starts receiving too many inputs from you, it will basically throttle you and start dropping those inputs. In other words, the game is punishing you for having high APM. This is just a rough explanation of it. It was briefly talked about on stream when ZOS was showing the data from the first vengeance test. This game has a lot of heavy calculations, and all of it done server side to prevent cheating which was pretty rampant in the early years of the game (It was pretty bad, you had people flying and spamming meteor every GCD). I personally don't think the performance issues have anything to do with the engine. Maybe it could to a degree, but I think the real problem is the servers simply can't handle all the complex calculations at once, so they have to rate limit your inputs, and performance gets terrible when a lot is happening at once. I don't know if the hardware used for the servers is the best that is available, but if it's not, I'd hope that a huge upgrade is in order when cross play comes because I don't think the current servers will be able to handle it.

You must be new here, welcome 😁

It's been like this for me since the start, the quick solve is don't play PvP content.

I don't believe the devs will ever address this, it's probably a fundamental mega server issue that underpins the whole game

Yep, ran Vet Lucent Citadel yesterday and actually stopped using any skills. Here we are in one very tough fight because it was mostly a PUG run and the skills started messing up, at one time the skills were firing off like 4-5 seconds later then just stopped working. Like I said, I had to stop using them all together and just move around to avoid dying then tried the skills again to see if they would work.

It’s just an old game that started development in like 2007. This game was one of the few big attempts at a big mmorpg that made it. If it was not an elder scrolls title, this game would’ve not lasted long, and I think some of ZOS take that for granted.
