While I do like their help in combat situations, and some of the keepsake bonuses are cool, primarily I'm interested in who they are as characters and what their stories are.

I do enjoy making outfits for them that I think fit their personalities, but I'm not too concerned about being able to customize them. It really wouldn't matter to me if we couldn't alter anything about them.

Really it's just the passives. After I level them up enough to get the passives, I don't really use them.

Having a tank companion is great, and I like the customization too. But I mostly pick companions based on who I like.

Even if I made Tanlorin the most useful thing ever, I just can't stand their personality so she would go unused.

That I don't have to have them out is my favourite part, and will be until ZOS teach them not to stand in stupid, and what taunt priority is.

Really the first three, but their AI or dmg mitigation vs ground aoe needs some work. Also targeting in general.

Tanlorin was tough to level though. I had to virtually back hand them regularly to keep them in line.

All of the options above and more! But their character and their story are essential. They are like two component adhesive, that holds everything else together.

I couldn't stand and wouldn't use any of them if they were too annoying or obnoxious. Although, I have to say Ember is missing that threshold by only a tiny bit.

While I do like having a companion to run with for help in dungeons etc and some of the humour they come out with, the thing that lets them down for me is not being able to put a helmet on them or change hair etc as it ruins the elusion a bit when you see several companions with the same face and hair etc at a dolmen for instance.

I always giggle when someone tells me "wow! Your Isobel is so strong! My companion dies immediately" - Aahh my good girl... <3

Wether it's her or Zerith, I like when they are useful, and after fighting alongside with them difficult bosses, I miss them when, let's say, I join a Trial. Sure they wouldn't be on par with skilled players, but Idk... There's some kind of pride in conquering a fight with them instead of another player.

With the writing in ESO being where it’s been, it’s actually more recent Companion stories that have been the highlights of the game lately.

Most people agree ESO’s writing high point was from Wrothgar-Summerset, and it fell off a lot since then. Lately, even the sidequests (which have trended better than the main quests) have been uninspired. But the two brightest highlights they’ve had in recent years were both Companions: Sharp and Zerith. Sure, not all have been amazing (and I’m sure all of us have one or two Companion stories that we’ll point to as being on the level of the rest of ESO’s quests…), but the good ones have been spectacular.

I do enjoy having Sharp running around with me to be my DPS while I tank for him, and also because I’m not in overland ESO for the challenge. It also helps that Sharp is Garrus Vakarian, and he’s the GOAT.
…I need to replay Mass Effect.

Really, all of the above, to be fair! Some of them I'm not particularly fond of and they never get used, and others I like and play with.

Zerith-var is absolutely my favourite and he gets the most time out of the box. He's maxed out and good company on my travels. He's even performed quite well in the Night Market. Thanks to him, I never miss a heavy sack! He even wept over my corpse one time I was killed! Awesome!
RIP Atherton, my beautiful little gentle friend, my Shining Light. I will miss you forever. Without you I am a hollow shell.

All of the above (though some passives are better than others) Yeah, they're not the best at combat but sometimes they really pull it out of the fire. Also, "That's how we do things in Daggerfall!

Edit: I realize I failed the assignment. What I like <the most> is the characters themselves.

I use them most for help with world bosses, doing the dailies. Not that I couldn't do it without them, but they help me get the job done quicker. When you have fought the same world bosses a zillion times, you just want to finish it as quick as possible, no?

Dragon hunt in Elsweyr. As well.

So I like them best for that. When I play, I almost never have audio on from the game, so I have little idea what they are on about.

That being said, I have tried some times, and they mostly say the same over and over.

I wish we could chage their hairstyles.

I like a bit of everything about the companions.

A side project I've been working on, is decorating homes for each of them, themed on their culture and personality.

Combat wise, I would like to see improvements to their "performance".

    Like prioritize bosses, or mobs.

Maybe teach them to roll sideways, not just backwards.

Don't leave boss combat zone, forcing a reset.

And of course, the obligatory, don't "stand in stupid"!

I'm going to have to go with "other" because it's often a combination.

Personalities are a big selling point. Bastian is probably the most annoying of the lot and I'm not exceptionally fond of Tanlorin, but the others are very well-done. I'd be seriously torn between Ember and Zerith-var on which one I like more.

Companion perks are also another big attraction, although very situational. Mirri's, Azandar's, and Zerith-var's are probably the most generally useful; Sharp's, Isobel's, and Ember's are very situational, and I don't find Tanlorin's or Bastian's to be very useful at all. I've no crying need for random potions other than for selling, and no character fails lockpicking often enough to need extra time.

Combat help is definitely welcome, though. I usually prefer to have companions tank. None of them DPS well enough for much other than overland mobs and their "A.I." isn't flexible enough to be much more than a band-aid healer.

For me, companions aren't smart enough to be that helpful in combat. They act as a distraction, but I can't say I can do content with them that I couldn't do before. I like the quests, but those are temporary. The voice acting is excellent.

The perks are the best. They're actually useful and are permanent.

I do use Sharp all the time and love his character but I never touch the other 7 companions now they're levelled. If the only reason I engage with 7/8 of a system is for the keepsakes I guess that makes it my answer! I can't really say on average I like anything else more

As someone who likes to hang back, having a tank companion option is just very convenient. Tanlorin's passive is nice too.

In most cases, it's certainly not the characters. Unlocking Tanlorin's passive was just awful even on the 'minimal' companion reactions setting.

The exception, and by far the most awesome, is Azandar. "You're interrupting research!"

Of the choices offered just their assistance in combat though they leave much to be desired for me. I don't like the fact that they LOSE XP if you forget to dismiss them in certain situations like crafting.

And I could do without the comments they make - Just shut up and assist me. I don't need commentary (to be fair I rarely listen to the game as I almost always have my headphones on listening to tunes. Still, it's annoying to hear the same scripts over and over and over and over on those occasions when I do listen to the game.)

It would be nice if they could earn XP more AND faster. I have one that's been stuck at level 15 for months. Maybe offer a way to let them earn a portion of my CP XP since I usually just let them fight while I watch. Seems fair, no?

Regardless, Companions IS a nice feature. Thank you, ZOS for adding it.

Just a thing - they don’t lose XP in any case. It’s Rapport they lose. Companion XP is only gained from combat.

Rapport is not only an RP thing, it also gives an XP multiplier. If you have a high Rapport Companion, they will gain XP faster than if they dislike you.

Likely their companionship in and of itself. I'm not too interested in their personality because it tends to be headcanoned as whatever my character is in that moment. Murderous and callous vampire? Bastian is his obedient thrall bodyguard. Righteous knight in shining armour? Bastian is his faithful comrade-in-arms.

For that reason the race and gender of the companion is far more important than any backstory they're given, although I'm always open for a good story and character relationship outside of whatever is currently being headcanoned while questing.

Ignoring the efficacy of companions in more serious encounters:

    - Dropped companion gear can be valuable on the market.
    - Off-loading heals to save space on the skill bar is nice.
    - Some of the keepsakes technically generate additional gold. Inventory clutter is a downside without assistants however. ZoS really should add earned merchants/bankers/deconstructors like Pirharri fence for fairness in my opinion.

Aside from that, I find Ember's quirky personality amusing. Reminds me a lot of my little sister and the random thoughts she would share.

Zerith-Var's commentary very much reflects what he is, an old soul given another chance at life and the opportunity to experience new things again.
