I understand thats a random drop from any mobs; but since most of them are not lootable, will it just plop up by defeating them or do you have to loot something? For example the random favor drops you sometimes get?

I was wondering the same thing and then I came across a dead imp in the Parch that our group killed and it had it as loot. So my guess is it really just does drop as regular loot from the trash mobs, the drop rate is just low.

Apparently they gain an inventory to loot when the drop chance for a fragment is triggered.
That's what I've gathered so far when I farmed the fragments. I also recommend to join a "Boss farming group" via the group finder or with the help of your guild to gather the relic fragments quickly and get the keys from the bosses.

There's a new menu (F5 for PC) where you can see the boss order btw.

I only farmed the skittering yesterday and managed to get all the farmable fragments from mobs and bosses + enough repport to buy the fragment from the vendor. Now I'm only missing the last fragment from the reward coffers and I got the first relic in my hands. So, as a solo player sticking to random people, it's definetly doable in case anybody was also wondering about this :)

Well I managed to get 2 of these weak enemy fragments without realising, however after 6 hours of actually trying to get the last one from mobs, I think I have caused an imp extinction event for nothing.

I didn't know anything about NM when it started and I dived in. I didn't even know about splinters. But I left several dead mobs behind me with unlootable splinters on them because I already had it but didnt know to use it. I guess they drop quite easily!

you are correct, if it drops, you will be able to loot the trash mob so keep an eye out for that so you dont miss them
