While I agree with that, the problem is that most of the comparatively few players who want crossplay are console players wanting to switch to PC without having to buy the game again and start from scratch. If ZOS had been able to offer free account transfers from console to PC there wouldn't have been calls for crossplay.
My concern is for those console players who don't want to get involved in crossplay but will end up being very lonely on console.
Meanwhile it's clear from the announcement that we're all going to have to put up with a lot of additional crossplay-related downtime over many months - quite possibly a year or more - before crossplay goes live, assuming it does.

I really do not understand what all the whining is about cross play. Some of the best pvpers and pvers use controller, and some dont even use addons except for the odd one here or there. So this is just whining for the sake of whining.
It is a win win situation across the board.
I play on PS/NA.
I sell stuff on guild traders. I have looked up prices on PC versus PS. Order of magnitude differences for some items. Stuff just costs more on PC. Including the prices to win a trader spot. The guilds I belong to will go broke quickly trying to afford the bid price for a trader spot. And I have seen folks post "Oh, just join all new guilds once the ones you belong to now fold". Doesn't sound like win win to me.
Oh, and the gold I have banked now is plenty to cover me playing on PS, but I understand it would be considered chump change on PC. So, I get to grind gold until I catch up. Doesn't sound like win win to me.
Groups that I do trials with mostly use PlayStation Network (PSN) voice chat. Because the ESO built in voice chat can be "glitchy", while the PSN voice chat usually just works. How does this work with cross play? Maybe PSN voice chat will connect with PC players voice chat and Xbox players voice chat. What if it doesn't?
And I could keep going, but this is already a wall of text.

Yes, explained at the link above which mentions cross play development and disabling Vengeance.
[snip] disabling vengeance already? Can’t we just leave it as a secondary campaign? I mean I guess it was a little average. Interesting concept thoughhttps://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/691699/

Did I miss the poll on who wants cross-play? Perhaps it's about time ZOS really does find out what the entire community wants...or have they been doing that & I've been missing the polls these past few years?
in this case it really doesnt matter what the community wants, the game needs crossplay in this landscape.
Apologies...stupidly thought what the 'majority' of players wanted in the game might matter...thankfully plenty of great content to enjoy. Just hope we don't get more bugs and longer and longer maintenance as a result.
Although I personally have no need for crossplay, since I play on PC and the populations on PCNA and PCEU are decent, the people who play on console have been begging for crossplay for years. And to be honest, it will be nice to be able to finally play alongside console-only players who I've watched playing ESO on Twitch or read posts from in these forums, so that will be cool-- when it happens, which won't be this year. So it's good that this is actively being worked on.

They have never been able to really fix the lag in Cyrodiil this will only make it worse I've even started seeing lag in PVE

I'm mostly against crossplay because I don't want voice chat to come to PC, for those who only play on console and don't know about this, ESO on PC does NOT have voice chat.

That is a matter of opinion. I am personally against crossplay because I have yet to see any online game go crossplay that doesn't result in consoles getting the short end of the stick. And as someone who plays on PSNA I see no need for it as our population is just fine and thriving.
Unfortunately, those of us who feel this way have no choice in the matter. So the best we can hope for is that ZOS gets it right, and nails it on the first attempt. Anything less, and the end result could very well be catastrophic.
