Dungeon Experience for New Player

So I recently left World of Warcraft and am a new player to Elder Scrolls Online. I have been having a terrible experience with dungeons in this game. I mean, here's my experience. I have been joining groups to do dungeons, it takes awhile to even get a group, then when I do get a group, there is always one player that just leaves the group and runs to the last boss forcing the "Joining Encounter in Progress" mechanic and I am beamed to the end and it's over. This is the worst I have played on any mmo.
It seems to me that I represent a hopefully decent amount of players, meaning "the New Player". Seems to me ESO and the community would want/encourage new players. But I don't know, if ESO has been out for like 10yrs and this has never been addressed, then maybe no one wants the real new player.
Is this a problem for anyone else?
I'm sure I am not the only one to post on this. I wish there was an option to select in the "join" page that click for speed run or click for players who want to enjoy the scenery. Also, at the end, everyone leaves the group, leaving me with a very short timer and I get kicked out of the dungeon. I don't have time to go back and do anything. If the dungeon is an instance, why does it matter if I want to run around an explore? It shouldn't be hurting lag. That's like saying all the housing is hurting lag, housing is it's own instance too.
Joining guilds isn't great either, so that isn't an viable option. The devs are the best option to fix this type of thing.
Anyway, it's just my one, humble, single drop in the bucket, new player experience and it wasn't fun. Will probably search for something else.

Honestly, joining a guild and forming your own group of friends will result in your best dungeon experiences, imo. People have been complaining on the forums about others speed running through dungeons for months and ZOS’s only response to this has been that they are working on solo instances for dungeons. Those are being rolled out slowly (2 dungeons are slated to be released later this year) so be prepared to wait.

No offense, but anyone coming from WoW and complaining about dungeon speedrunning must not have done many dungeons in WoW. The pace there is tank runs as fast as he can and aggroes everything while everyone else tries to keep up. I run dungeons here every day, and I only run into rampant Speed Racer-types about every third or fourth dungeon. I am sorry that you seem to have it happen more often, but there are tools available to you to avoid it like group finder and guilds. Good luck to you, and welcome to the game. The community here is exponentially better than WoW, so I hope you find your place.

It's been this way for a very long time. I first started in 2015 and even then it seemed like most dungeon groups just wanted to get in and out as fast as possible and would do anything they could to limit how long they had to spend in there.

I was confused and disappointed when the group that invited me for my first dungeon run told me to make sure I got the quest then didn't give me any time to speak to (or even find) any of the NPCs. Apparently dungeon quests are not for playing, you just collect it to get the skill point at the end and if you care at all about what's going on most groups will say you're doing it wrong. I was even more disappointed when I found out later that dungeon quests are not repeatable so I could never actually play it on my main character.

Many years later I found a guild dedicated to playing dungeons in 'story mode' where you're given time to actually pay attention to the quests and look around, and I think that's the only way to reliably get to play dungeons properly. The dungeon finder is basically only for speed runners, because they tend to dominate any group they're in so anyone else is forced to follow along or give up.

What platform and server are you on? You might be able to find enough people here on the forums to help out, or recommendations for good guilds on your server.

This has been a problem for years. I know that guilds can be off-putting for a lot of people, I didn't want to join one either when I started (this is my first MMO, and I am an introvert). But finding a social guild, not one that specializes in hard content, is often the way to go.

If you don't want to do that, you can always ask in Zone Chat for others who want to run the dungeon without speed running. As long as you're in Grahtwood, Deshaan, or Stormhaven (where the undaunted enclaves are), you should be able to find enough.

Even better if you're not yet level 50. People love to run random dungeons when they're guaranteed an easy dungeon. I keep a couple of characters below level 30 just for this purpose and I need to farm transmutes (by running the random dungeon every day). When those characters hit level 30, I delete them and start over, and just keep recycling their gear. That doesn't help if you're trying to level, or get skill points, on a specific character, alas.

But what's the alternative? Without the joining encounter mechanic, the guy ahead will finish the dungeon while you're stuck all the way back, fighting the adds that the guy ahead skipped.
This mechanic was added precisely to solve this problem, and slightly improve the low level player experience, so they're not left out.

If you want to run dungeons at a slow pace, you should find like-minded people, and run your dungeons at whatever pace you like. How would the devs solve this problem for you? By introducing mechanics that slow down the pace of the entire group to match whoever is the slowest in the group? You might enjoy such mechanics now, but when you've played that dungeon hundreds of times, and when you're only doing it to get the 10 transmute crystals, these mechanics would become ridiculous, and it won't be worth running dungeons anymore.

Here's the issue that you've found—it's only for new players before they hit level 50, CP 160:

Random daily dungeons reward transmute stones, leading players to rush through them on Normal mode. The way around it is to group with at least a guildmate or someone from zonechat or two.

Seem annoying? I agree. But this daily random reward cuts down on queue times for specific dungeons (for players farming specific items), so it's an unintended side effect. At max level, this doesn't happen for pledges or dungeon groups.

Veteran dungeons (particularly DLC dungeons) are more difficult and challenging, and where you'll likely enjoy them more, with unique encounters and a range of achievements.

If you want a much shorter normal dungeon queue time, try playing as a half-healer or half-tank. In normal random dungeon queue, a tank only needs a taunt slotted to taunt bosses (and ideally to Immobilize/snare enemies), and healers just need a heal-over-time ability or two (if any). You can still mosty DPS, but the queue is lightning fast and you'll help speed up the queue for others.

Yes. Yes it is. I've been saying the same thing, asking the Devs to fix this nonsense since I joined ESO two and half years ago.

I support full clears of dungeons. I am NOT a skipper (except for the last trash section of Selene's Web. I will skip this part EVERY time.)

Best bet? When you first zone into a dungeon type in chat that you need the quest. It has been my experience that most groups will help you complete the quest. If you are still leveling they will even kill everything in the dungeon to get you as much experience as possible. If someone replies in a way that is a "forget" you, leave the group, wait out the timer and re-queue. There is NO need to subject yourself to such toxicity.

As for guilds, ask. ESO is the only MMO I know of that allows players to be in five guilds at once. So, asking the same thing over and over in five different guild chats is VERY TEDIOUS and boring. But, with a dose of good luck, one of those five guilds will be a good guild that has people willing AND able to group with you to run a dungeon or two.

Ultimately, though the idea is for you be self-sufficient enough to do things on your own. THIS was and sort of still is my issue. I am A LOT better now that I was just six months ago but I still need improving. And I always ask in various chats for help when I need it. I almost always get the help I need. It just takes patience.

Welcome to ESO. The game and the community are pretty darn nifty if you give it and them a chance. Don't let your frustration get the better of you. Relax and TAKE YOUR TIME. You can do it. No worries.

I actually don't want solo dungeons. I like grouping for dungeons. Its just they should have more options so speed runners can have fun and slower players can take their time. Solo dungeons doesn't solve anything.

Ya, I think the speed runner could solo the dungeon, but only needs us peasants so he/she can get all the bonuses. This is exactly why I'm surprised ESO hasn't put in an option so both type of players can enjoy.

    killians66 wrote: »

Oh, there are plenty of us who do.

Just yesterday I had a bad experience that I hopefully turned into a good experience for the new players in our group. (CPs in low hundreds.) Our (fake) tank was treating us like NPCs so we kicked him. Now, I could have just swapped from my healer gear to solo build and just carry the two remaining players. But that would have not been a nice experience for the new players. Instead, I swapped to a tank build with a couple of heals. And then tanked the dungeon, while also providing some heals. This way the new players who queued as DDs got to do the DD stuff.

And that is what I do anyway when I see low CP players. (Or anyone struggling, really. The CP doesn't tell anything else except how long you have played.) Help them where I can, provide instructions, explain mechs, give gear (I have a full sticker book), help with builds.

We are out there. It's not all doom and gloom.

Yeah, that is a bit annoying. But I think it's for a reason. If you get kicked/voted out of a group, you don't immediately fly out. You get the timer. Without the timer you could still stay there and mess everything for the remaining players. And I suppose this uses the same timer. Long enough that you can loot the boss and hand over the quest after completion, but short enough that if you are out of the group in the middle of the dungeon, you can't just stay there and troll.
    killians66 wrote: »

Why is that not great? It may take a while to find the guild that is exactly what you want, but once you find it, it's well worth it. There are new player friendly guilds, casual guilds, hardcore guilds, trading guilds, housing guilds, a bit of everything guilds, PVP guilds, RP guilds, you name it and there's a guild for it.

The guilds consist of real people so you need to find a guild where there are like-minded people. May not happen overnight, but join a few guilds, see what they're like. If you don't like them, leave the guild and find another one. It may take time because as an adult you don't find friends like you did when you were 7: "Hi. I like your hat." "And I like your shirt." "Are we friends now?" "Yup."

Well, since you brought up WOW, I'll bring up FFXIV. There once was a mechanic that wouldn't allow players to rush forward by skipping cut scenes in specific dungeons, what they found was that players would absolutely NOT run those dungeons that this mechanic was connected to. The majority of players- once they ran it the first time- never wanted to run them again if they couldn't speed forward. They ended up having to remove the gate, allow players to skip cutscenes, and rush forward- just to get players to run them so that new players would be able to find a group. Otherwise, since these dungeons were connected to the main story, new players could never find a group to finish the dungeon and move the MSQ forward.

The fact is, most players have already run these dungeons many many many times, and don't want to be forced to wait for new players- they just want to get their daily done and over. If you gate them, then players just won't run them, or, they will come to the forums and complain about how they lack the time to sit through cut scenes because 'they have a life outside of ESO'.

Thus, the devs are creating solo instances for (hopefully) all dungeons... so that players who don't want to rush or skip, can play through at their own pace.

This is something I find odd.

The daily random is there to incentivise you to join a random group to help them. You get extra XP and transmute crystals for your effort.

When I join, I hope for a speedrun group to get it over with quickly. But I am prepared to "pay for my bonus" by helping out if there are newer players. Those who do a daily random and then speedrun through it despite other players asking to slow down are basically saying "I want the reward for helping without actually helping."

You recently left WoW which is just the same when it comes to speed running dungeons so why are you surprised?

At least nowadays, you've google AI as one example - to ask questions and get a nice little list of solutions and suggestions to overcome your handicap of being new.

But yes, they are pretty much smashed - and as a returning player to ESO who also left WoW - they feel good mostly.

Lastly, and most importantly, you get teleported to the next boss once it's engaged by another member of the group so don't get too hung up on feeling left behind.

Yes, the mentioned attitude is selfish and unfair. But unfortunately players just do it because

    3. while it is socially judged, it barely affects the result in the end of the day

True. I would still like to see my idea implemented. I think that would have the least impact to other players but would funnel all the speedrunners to play by themselves. (I probably would be there, too, though.)

I am CP 2.500 and I generally solo Dungeons so that I can go at my own speed.

You are likely having an extraordinary bad experience these days due to the Golden Pursuit running right now: it rewards players for clearing 10 Group Dungeons while in a group.

Today was the first time I used Dungeon Finder queuing specifically for Normal Fungal Grotto 1.
I was DD and the Tank immediately sprinted and teleported us to fights.
Having experienced this I thought: well, I'll queue as Tank, slot a taunt and call it a day.
I emulated the behaviour of the Tank I previously encountered and got to 5 FG1 clears; missing another 5.

I'll have to decide if to repeat this 5 times more or join the first nAA or nAS that will appear in Group Finder to complete a Trial (another activity rewarded by the Golden Pursuit, for which I am at 15/16).

Point is: even people like me that would normally never cause the bad experience you are having, now they probably are, so... It's sadly really bad timing for you to start this week XD but it will likely get better; it's not like this for every Dungeon queue, normally.

So if the others don't play like you want you abandon them in a 3 team group after queuing potentially forcing them to exit and relist wasting their time...
Yea the world is full of toxicity.

It's bad. There is no way to do dungeon quests as a player unless you form a group specifically to be able to listen to the NPCs.

Early game dungeons which were designed differently sometimes are impossible at all due to speed runners. I'm trying to get more skill points for my new healer and some dungeons require NPCs to talk for a minute at a time for updates. Just yesterday I got an early-game dungeon and someone speed-ran to a boss before the NPC talked enough to even quickly grab the quest at all, and I was portaled into the fight and couldn't even pick up the quest.

    It's really off-putting.

??? It was very easy in XIV to get groups for those dungeons because they gave a bunch of tomestones and XP people wanted. The cutscenes were unskippable and I think still are even after they changed them. They did make those dungeons shorter and broke them up more though. Those dungeons were in their own special category and still are, and they actually changed from letting people skip cutscenes to not allowing it to address new players not being able to experience the narrative.

EVERY dungeon/raid/trial etc. won't let the group move if someone is watching the intro cutscene to the content even today.

I actually don't want solo dungeons. I like grouping for dungeons. Its just they should have more options so speed runners can have fun and slower players can take their time. Solo dungeons doesn't solve anything.

Then forming your own group will be your best option forward. While I understand your frustration, expecting the devs to fix this in a way you prefer is like wishing for rain water in h*ll, it likely won’t happen.

    (Edited for typo)
This, and join an guild focusing on new players. Its very smart, like getting crafted armor you can not make yourself yet.
Its pretty fun kicking the speed runners.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Also, at the end, everyone leaves the group, leaving me with a very short timer and I get kicked out of the dungeon.
Yeah, that is a bit annoying. But I think it's for a reason. If you get kicked/voted out of a group, you don't immediately fly out. You get the timer. Without the timer you could still stay there and mess everything for the remaining players.
I believe (and correct me if I'm wrong [EDIT: TomofHyrule found the link]) that the timer is also a server load thing. Every dungeon is an instance, and needs to be spun up on the servers, and takes up space and memory. The timer is partly to close down unused instances.

But, it really needs to be longer. Some quest closing dialogs are longer than the timer, which really hurts folks who are getting skill points, never mind someone who wants to explore.

When I'm in a dungeon (that hasn't had kicking drama, or anything), and it looks like someone might want to finish the quest or explore, I just leave the area but stay in the group, and tell them to disband whenever they're done. I've let people explore dungeons for a half an hour that way. And they seem to appreciate it.
