Skills are fundamental. If a player is forced to change the skills they use to avoid these effects then they can no longer play as they want. This line should never have been crossed.

Makes me wonder what ES6 will look like, if they will be more like Skyrim, or more like ESO? I'm wondering if the age of devs have anything to do with this? Because as older devs retire, new devs raised with anime and such are taking over. I've noticed a lot of newer single player games have also gone the 'animesque' direction. Not just in art/color but also in combat style.

Will you still be alive when ES6 releases?

That's a strange way to look at it.
Maybe they are going for a certain headcanon vibe for their character that is otherwise unavailable to them from base game options. Like, why use a generic base game brown horse when you could instead embody your Reachmen headcanon character with a hagraven-inflected horse with twisted roots and feathers adorning it?
That sort of player doesn't care about what others think they are doing it for their own purposes.

We saw what happened when EA tried to make Dragon Age cute and cartoony. ESO as an MMO may need to attract some kind of regular revenue from its players, but I think it needs to do so in a way which stays true to its Elder Scrolls identity. And a certain kind of realistic fantasy is a large part of that identity. If it strays too far from that identity, I think it will lose the loyalty of many of its TES fans. Not to mention it will also lose a lot of what makes TES unique. So again, it comes down to balance, and I think it's definitely past time to rein in the drift towards generic, flashy MMO.

I said that once in a thread about wanting to hide the mount effects a long time ago and was told by other players that it wouldn't be fair to those that purchased these flashy mounts because showing them off is the reason they purchased them. And if we are able to hide their effects they lose value because not everyone will be seeing theirs. So yes, there is some of that in play.

I agree. This 2H weapons refresh and every other weapon refresh coming up needs to automatically come with a set of skill styles that reflect the old animations as closely as possible so people will have the choice of ones to use that reflect their characters better. Some of us have had characters for 11+ years and a graphical change like this can be radical.
It reminds me of another game I’m not going to mention the name of that did a so-called graphical update to their character models. I’m sure some people liked the new models, but in my opinion, it ruined them because they were no longer the characters I had been playing for years.

Agreed, it is a moot point. Some people like to keep complaining even when a solution is incoming, or someone gives the answer earlier in the thread (I forget which post number). Restating something different ways does not add something to a conversation when it's restating the same thing.

This thread is asking WHY this trend to becoming more and more cartoony. WHY is this the direction they are choosing? It has gone way too far.licenturion wrote: »The biggest live service games out there are cartoony because it sells. That means its going to be flashy, sexy, flamboyant, over the top, or anything of the like.
I know what the point of the thread is. Yet I stand by what I said earlier as some people like to keep complaining even after an answer has been provided. I have quoted some answers to your original question "This thread is asking WHY this trend to becoming more and more cartoony. WHY is this the direction they are choosing?". They are from posts 58, 63, 67, and 69 before I stopped checking. You have some answers. Do you expect a dev to come on and state the reason?

That is all player speculation. And yes, I want to hear the reason from ZOS.

Lol, I wish you the best with that request. I can't wait to see ZOS open their books and show a reason for more flashy.
twisttop138 wrote: »The answer is simple. They have people that track this stuff. What players like, what they want and what they will spend on. They changed the 2h stuff because they probably thought people would like it. It seems to have worked out, some don't like it but the complaints are minimal. I am sure they see that as a success.
@ZOS_JessicaFolsomNew VFX Brightness & Intensity [Feedback]: We have seen feedback related to the overall brightness, size, and intensity of the updated skills VFX. We are working on some sliders so you can better customize your experience and adjust the brightness and intensity of how your abilities and/or other players’ abilities appear on your screen. This will not make it into Update 49, but we did want to let you know we’re working on it and will share more info when we have it.
This sounds good, but i see you specify new vfx and updated skills, is this only for the skills part of Visual Refresh or also items i mentioned in my thread?

Heya Luna, nice to meet you! This is Jose Camacho, Gameplay Engineer, first post actually!
I am responding as I'm currently investigating the in-game slider setting implementation. As it is now, the in-game slider setting reduces the transparency of any VFX sourced from either yourself, remote players, NPCs, with settings for each sourcing category individually. That means you can reduce the visibility of everyone, just other players, just NPCs, or any combination!
As for which VFX this applies to, the slider applies to all VFX we can catch belonging in the sourcing category. For example, if the slider for your own VFX intensity is lower, then all VFX caused by you from your own abilities, mounts, etc will be lowered. We hope to include item sets in that category but more testing is needed as we investigate. The hope is to include the options for environment as well but more investigation work needs to be done.
Really excited to bring this to you as we've seen this request over the years like with your recent post and want to make ESO a more accessible game for all!
Which regarding that, they mentioned they're going to add the ability to adjust sliders not only for other peoples' Mounts, Skill, and so on, but a player's own things as well.
Holy heck my brain blanked and I did not even realize there were 3 more pages to this thread, rip. I also just skimmed over the fact that someone on the first page posted that quote, I think I was assuming it was just reiterating that they're working on sliders.SilverBride wrote: »Which regarding that, they mentioned they're going to add the ability to adjust sliders not only for other peoples' Mounts, Skill, and so on, but a player's own things as well.
They stated that they are not going to use sliders in the thread below. Post #18. This post also mentions accessibility and I strongly hope this does not mean the option will be part of the accessibility mode so that we would have to use that to get the benefit. We really need some clarification on that.

I'm assuming you meant Star wars the old Republic. That was a jarring change. Idk why you wouldn't wanna mention it. I suppose you could mean something else but swtor caused a lot of uproar with it.
As far as skill styles, the changes don't bother me but bring on the skill styles. In game, not store. I have a sneaking suspicion that you will find lots of skill styles padding out tomes rewards.
