Some of my wishes for updating the companions system

Hello everyone!

I am personally a moderate fan of the current companion system. It has its pluses, it has some flaws, but overall I think it's endearing and I enjoy most of them as characters, their quests and their personality. But I also feel that updates to companions have been unfortunately mostly limited to just adding more companions rather than improving on how we interact those present. I feel like after doing their quest they are left to a set-and-forget kind of state. I would personally be in favor of the next updates focusing on improving some base features from companions over adding new ones so that when new ones get added, we can get more out of them as well. Here's a few thoughts I had of things that I could enjoy seeing being added to them.

Battle strategy management:
Among the combat updates I'd like to see done with them, I'd like to have access to a menu that lets me give them a set of behaviors to follow in combat, which might help with their awkward running and scattering or AoE positioning. I am thinking orders like "stand opposite side to me", "stand your position", "follow my movements", "prioritize marked location", "Focus weaker/stronger targets" etc. This could be something in the companion menu when talking to them with a list of settings to place, you then go into battle and they would behave according to what you asked them.

Add 2 more ultimates per companion:
While companions are meant to be role customizable, I think for that purpose each companion should come with a set of 3 ultimates, one per role, instead of the current format where each only get 1 and its only for damage purposes. This is mostly to round out their role focus.

Actually release legendary companion equipment into the world:
I find it odd that legendary companion equipment only exists so far through events or gifts, and only as rings. I would prefer to be able to find legendary companion gear naturally through adventuring. And admitedly, the true reason I would want this is honestly because I just like round values. Right now traits and stats for purple gear caps at unclean values like trait% of 1.2%, 1.7%, 2.7% instead of nice 1.5%, 2% or 3% while armor and weapons have stat values of 900/1900/2900 instead of 1000/2000/3000. I am particular about being a number neat freak.

Companion Duo adventuring:
I think I'm not alone in wanting to be able to summon 2 companions at the same time, but in my mind I think it shouldn't just be an update that allows this universally and nothing more. I think this would be a great opportunity to add this feature as a quest reward to add some more story and interactions between our companions. Maybe not have every possible duo combination possible immediately, but something like interacting with Ember, her hearing you met this mercenary from Necrom and being curious to meet them, which would start a quest whereas you would go on an adventure with Ember and invite Sharp-As-Night along, have them banter as you quest and then through earning each other's trust (despite their different opinions on fishing) you could then uniquely summon the 2 together when adventuring. I imagine Azandar could be curious about Zerith-Var and his past being a scholar type, wanting to know if he had seen anything of particular interest in his era but maybe lacking a bit of consideration when talking about such subjects by being too focused on academics.

Companion heirloom quest (companion mythics):
Each companion could have a unique quest that starts a hunt for an antique jewellry piece item, either from family connection, treasure hunting, lost and reclaim, etc. This would be to offer a certain connection and significance to the item for the companion with a bit of fun engagement to obtain. This mythic would be a jewellry mostly so it doesn't force a role specific equipment piece onto a companion, would have the unique ability to choose which trait you want on it with the value of a legendary equipment and offer a unique bonus to the companion in combat.

Companion Duels:
This one is mostly a for fun kind of idea but it could be interesting to have the option, after much adventuring, that you may choose to spar with your companion and their strength would scale to their level, the skill lines they have developped and the equipped type of weapon/armor weight. I do not think of it as a way to earn rewards and such but just a feature that would be cool to have and interact with at our own leisure (maybe an alternative to dueling tasks as opposed to dueling players for upcoming tamriel tomes).

The ability to rarely get legendary gear for ALL slots and not just rings.

The ability for your companions to target ALL mobs correctly and not bug out with some large enemies like Gothmau and Tidespite. (c'mon it has been over a year now most likely and no updates or responses to bug feedback since the original "We're looking into it".

The ability to customize your companions appearance more, Ember needs her hair did so badly.

Companions need enhancements to their behavior in response to aoe dangers, interrupts (ranged?), and just staying alive and helping you do so.

    1. Allow headgear on companions (circlets, hats, helms).
    2. Allow companions to come into home with my character just like we were going to a tavern.
    3. When I play a musical instrument, my companion should do their racial dance.
    4. Have my companion try to find a nearby chair and use it when I sit.

Longer term: Use generative AI to allow companions to generate new dialogue that is context sensitive. Either pay off voice actors to replicate their voices or create new pure AI voices to enable unlimited new generative dialogue.

I would like ZOS to allow the combat dialog to be turned off while keeping the rest. It annoys me every time a companion that's already died multiple times is trying to micromanage where I'm standing. No, I don't have to roll free when I'm standing exactly where I want to be.

They really ought to get rid of the unused gear traits. Or better yet, let us modify them with transmutes.

The ability to preselect a target for a companion with a skill/function like Mark target would be great. this permits a coordinated strike on grouped enemies. As a ranged player with ranged companion this would tactically enhance my playstyle.

No. An unequivocal, vehement no. It is essential that voices in games remain natural. VAs in games ARE the actors, they are the ones delivering the meaning and the emotion in scenes and interactions. A good VA can deliver nuance that elevates dialogue beyond its everyday meaning, and imbue it with the character's personality. This is something that goes beyond the basic emotions, it requires instinct.

Secondly, they will never pay all the actors their fair share. Thirdly, there will always be those times where something goes cringingly wrong.

Great suggestions in the OP! I especially like the idea of Mythic Companion equipment. That would be a fun way to enhance Companion combat and interconnect gameplay systems. And, as usual, only one Mythic can be equipped at a time, so there's less overhead for this Companion Item Set feature than how set bonuses work for players, provided Companion Mythics are the only way to give set bonuses to Companions.

I'd love to hear the interactions between Companions (and have more dialogue lines in general) but I know that's a tall order. Maybe we'll get a Companion Refresh (akin to the Class Identity Refresh) focused on one Companion at a time, updating their skills and giving them more dialogue?

Companion Dueling would be fun, as I put thought into how I build my Companions. My concern with that is that I think in most circumstances, Companion duels would end in a draw, as maybe two Companions have too many healing/tanking skills and not enough damage skills. Then there'd be the inevitable balance updates for this feature.

I'd really like to see a Companion afflicted with lycanthropy, or more specifically, the Companion Werewolf skill line. I know there's great story potential here, and I know it can't be easy to make a Companion be able to transform and use separate skills.

I'd be fine with the ability to turn any Companion into a Werewolf, but I'd really like to see the story of a Companion who already has lycanthropy throughout their questline. Plus, maybe different Werewolf Companions could have unique designs for their Werewolf form?

What I really meant by this was us dueling our own companion with their stat adjusted as a kind of mini boss lol. But that works too I guess! Maybe just a bit weird if our companion ends up fighting a doppleganger of themselves then come back freaked out "did I just hit...myself in the face with an axe? I don't know how I feel about this."

i also would love to have multiple Companions summoned at the same time, ideally at least 4.

    More quests should definitely happen.
    i love questing with Companions.

other suggestions in the post are good too.

Companions for the most part are 100% worthless most of the time. They should be programmed to be able to identify the most to least dangerous and taunt that one and then proceed to the others but maintain taunt on the most dangerous. Also, I am not sure why some of their skills are on such long cooldowns, it does not make sense.

In IA especially, the tanks cannot taunt and maintain taunt on some bosses and Marauders and I do not understand why. I recently got the Marauder Gothmau down to 10%, then the tank could not keep taunt and I was only targeting the Marauder. So now I am running all over the place and this is on Arc 2 just to avoid the Marauder and ended up dying to something but not sure what. All the while trying to avoid the nasty Fables and other adds or kill them but if you target anything other than the Maruader, then the tank will switch targets which is 100% stupid.

Sure I could go in super tanky but that is ridiculous on the first 2 to 3 Arcs. Also, it seems like the Marauders only appear now in Cycle 3 or later for Arc 2+. Please fix this.

I'd be happy if they would make the existing Ultimates more reliable. Bastian's, for example, is essentially useless because it wont fire unless he's in melee range - and if he's equipped with a staff he is never in melee range unless he's backed into a wall and can't dodge roll away.

They also need to make sure the ultimates are worth having slotted.

Isobel's takes so long to go off it's an active downgrade to having her around. (Casting times in general for their skills could use a look).

Edit: Also I think they could do with some actual item sets instead of their current trait system. The problem is that most of the traits are just kinda bad, especially compared to Quickened/Aggressive.

I'd say 3-5 generic ones then one unique one per companion would be good.

I'm in favour of more of them, and also many of the above ideas (better quality gear, mythicy gear, customisation, better skill options etc).

Just let us be able to get access to any new and improved gear (be it better drop rates or the ability to craft, upgrade and/or recreate their gear)! The prices and rarity of gear at the moment just makes gearing the companions up a drag!

Your first four, definitely yes. Just like they currently do in Skyrim, FO4, etc.!

Gen AI dialogue would be a hard "no", though. Quite apart from the valid issues raised by @BretonMage, this would put additional strain on client hardware, and likely require back-end support from dedicated servers just for this additional dialogue. I'd rather see more investment in the existing infrastructure to better support large group content (PvP and PvE).

Something else I would like to see with the companion ults on top of this is buffing some of them.

Zerith-var's ult for example (if you gear him melee, as he also has the Bastian issue) provides minor magickasteal... Cmon now.

I think each one should provide a decent buff or debuff; Mirri's and Azandar's are good examples.

    Hugs, Hats, Romance.

Also more quests / voice acting - they should get an update every year as recurring/companion characters. Even if it's just one new quest each.

Add reactivity to main story quests they weren't around for.
