Do you want Cross Platform Progression with Crossplay or not?

When Crossplay happens, do you want to be able to continue your progress on any platform that you can play ESO on, or would you rather each platform handle progression separately (but still be able to play with people from other platforms)?

Wouldn't make sense to not have cross progression with crossplay. I feel like if anything, that's a major point of having crossplay.

You can already change your email attached to your account, it’s just a bit of a process.

I doubt they will combine progress between accounts.

This PTS cycle it was brought up on this same forum that this is something being looked into, I don’t have the exact quote on that, I’m sure someone else could pull it up though if you needed it.

I did not know this. How is that going to work if you have different housing setups on different platforms, or different characters on each platform?

Is it going to let you log into the account with the progress of your choosing, such as having access to your Xbox and Playstation logins from the same place, or is it going to merge everything into one login for any of those platforms?

The point is to have more people to play with, not necessarily to play with the same progress from any platform. I was under the impression that Crossplay was being added solely to boost player numbers for platforms with low population, anyway.

Knowing that Crossplay also comes with Crossprog complicates things a lot. Who is going to get ownership of character names or userIDs if they won't be separated by platform?

Why would that be an issue? In my understanding, If you have two accounts on different platforms, say XBox and Pc, they are considered different accounts. Which is opposite to regions - PC NA and PC EU are considered the same account (you use the same credentials for both, just choose a region). So, by deciding which account to log in to you decide which characters/housing setups you will see (just like now). At least that is how I imagine this would work.

This is the main thing that's scaring a lot of people.

Considering ESO's architecture, the easiest way for them to make Crossplay a thing is to just make a mega-megaserver and populate it with the existing accounts, essentially doing the "server merge" that people have wanted for a while. That'd mean that there would then only be two megaservers: NA and EU, and you could access your account from any platform.

Of course, that doesn't mean merging accounts. That does mean that if you have a PC and an XB account, they would be considered separate accounts.

But of course, name conflicts are the big question. Internal IDs are numeric, so as long as they are unique, then they could merge them without issue. So are they? Account names are specific to the account, and in console's case, specific to the hardware as well. If those are not unique, they may be able to do the standard "add an icon or append something to the end of the name," but people will understandably be confused if all of a sudden their friends have different names and mails go nowhere... and if it's a combined server in the first place, then the originating console is irrelevant, which means appending anything won't make sense. That'll be a bit to disentangle. And then of course, there are Character Names, which do need to be unique by server as well, so what happens in terms of conflicts there, especially considering ESO tends to very lore-focused players who are very attached to those names and would quit the game before having to rename them. If they got it all set up with Account names, then they may even be able to allow multiple character names be the same by server, but who knows.

Like what if there's a hardcore RPer who started 7 years ago and plays for 3h/day... but they took a name that some console player used on their current server who played three days at release and then uninstalled? Who gets the name? The older one? The one who plays more?

However they do it though, database conflicts will arise. And they have to figure that out before merging servers, because if they don't... well, that would make the PTS planemeld look like child's play.

I’m not understanding the fear of Character name problems. Other games have proven that you can have duplicate names without a problem.

Ever play a Crossplay game and see an X for Xbox next to someone’s name? Or a controller for PlayStation? That’s how this thing works.

    You can have a…
Radiate (X) even while playing from a PC
Radiate (PC) even while playing from an Xbox

Or, they can attach generic numbers to the end of our account names, and completely open up Character names like in Destiny.

And if you have two accounts under the same email, they can pull a Warframe for when they added Crossplay, giving us the ability to choose one account, and that becomes the sole account under that email, and anyone afraid of losing any other attached accounts can still move them to a different email before that selection, and not lose anything.

If we didn’t have a track record of games that have successfully pulled off Cross-play + Cross-progression post-launch, I would understand the skepticism, but knowing this, any paranoia just seems artificial.

Kinda feel the same way. Wish they'd just scrap it and just try to do something to get more players to come and stay. I'm sure cross play will work but I feel like it's going to make a lot of ppl quit the game tbh. But I guess we should all wait and see how it plays out. Might work out wonderfully.

Absolutely. One can only hope that the Devs read some of the threads now and hear the community out, before making huge mistakes.

@ZOS_Kevin There are quite a lot of these threads at the moment. A lot of players are thinking about this and what it means for them. I hope this gets passed along the chain in an appropriate manner. 😊

Ultimately, the decision lies with the game director and his top staff. And they are the ones to account for cross play's success and all other repercussions coming from its implementation.

Hopefully finding solutions to things like duplicate accounts (especially the console accounts that started off as a literal copy of a PC account), duplicate character names, voice chat, trader locations and all the other things players have brought up is part of why ZOS has said crossplay will take a long time and a lot of planning to implement.

I'm sure there's also lots of technical problems behind the scenes which also need to be solved, but I assume the company won't see this as strictly something for the server engineers to sort out which no one else needs to think about.

I've been having problems with motion sickness playing on the playstation, which has meant my game time has massively reduced over the last few years.

My daughter started playing on PC last year so I dug out my copy (which I got just to check out PTS) and joined her. I found my laptop screen much better, so I've ended up playing much more than I expected. I've actually really enjoyed levelling again but it's just not the same.

I can't give up on my PS account, I just have too much time and money invested in it. I've got skins I couldn't get again now. I'm just way more invested in it.

My dream is to be able to play the account I love on a platform that doesn’t make me sick!

My thoughts exactly. If they merged all of the NA platforms together and all of the EU platforms together, that is only about three times the number of players that each has now. I am not sure that is a significant increase. Certainly not for the amount of effort involved.

All the evidence you need for this, is in the fact that every successful multiplayer game that has either started development after, or before Crossplay, has the system included, or have been actively working to bring it to us.

If it wasn’t worth the effort, they wouldn’t be putting the effort in.

It's not a significant increase for PC, but a really considerable one for console. Having started on PC recently the difference is startling. The thing that stood out most for me was when I was levelling antiquities on Artaem there were several others doing the same, that's something I haven't seen on Playstation for literally years. Then there's other things like DLC WB's and world events not being complete dead zones.

And I believe Playstation is thriving compared to Xbox. I've seen people leave PS for XB only to come back because it was so dead.

It's definitely a change that will bring in more console players because new players are much more likely to stay with a more healthy community in game.

It's definitely a change that will bring in more console players because new players are much more likely to stay with a more healthy community in game.

Without making a judgement one way or the other, this highlights a major factor on why PC players in general aren’t super excited about it.

Console populations are struggling. It’s known that XB as a console never really had major uptake outside of the US, but even then the ESO console populations are not high. We also have had several admissions that “old hardware limitations” are bottlenecking the game and preventing the addition of new things (which definitely could also mean potato PCs, but everyone knows that last-gen consoles still have a large market share and even current-gen is not going down in price because all RAM needs to go to AI slop now).

But PC is still doing quite well. That means the main argument for crossplay (“population”) doesn’t really hold for the PC community. Instead, PC is looking at what crossplay would cost them, and we’re already starting to see it: PTS went from a 5-week cycle with a week downtime before the patch to a 4-week cycle with four weeks of downtime because now all patches need extra time to go through console certification. We could say that queue times would improve with crossplay, but Grey Host is already at capacity and they aren’t going to increase it, so more players would only make it harder to get into the non-Vengeance campaign. And again, a lot of “dev team needs to do [thing]” fundamentally means that they’re not doing [other thing].

Now crossplay is necessary, full stop. There really should not be a multiplayer game in 2026 that does not allow it. That would be something that would be acceptable to say “I can take a light content year for that to happen.” But… 2025 was already a light content year. 2026 is cutting a number of features already (i.e. dungeons and large zones) for experimental stuff like the Night Market, which does not seem to be as enticing to those populations. We are on year three with no new Classes, and the animation reworks to save space for old hardware were a lot more noticeable than they said it would be (and we still have people in a stupidly wide stance for holding resto staves or the complete broken arm for the Malacath memento).
My point is that each year “we’re giving you less because we’re doing something else” is a harder and harder sell. And if the thing you’re giving less for is something that really only benefits a fraction of the population, eventually you’ll run off the ones who have been ignored too long.

Again, they have to do crossplay. It is no longer a “nice to have,” it’s a necessity. But they will have to carefully thread the needle to prevent driving off the PC players due to continual lack of new content.
