What do you play ESO in? In Daggerfall [you didn't have a choice], Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim I always play in 1st person, always felt easier to fight, Redguard you had to do 3rd so it doesn't count like Daggerfall. But when I got ESO I found myself not liking 1st Person and now I play only in 3rd person. I think for me its because in Elder Scrolls games the NPC's react to being hit and the response time is quick. But in ESO you're hitting an NPC thats on a server in another state/country so they don't react physically to being hit other then damage numbers. Curious what other people play in and why

I played Oblivion and Skyrim in 1st. Started ESO in 1st. Quickly realized I died so much exactly because of first person and the MMO design of fights, like with AoE highlighted on the ground beneath your - Switched to 3rd.

Being in 3rd I now appreciate more the aesthetic of my character (and die less) but any time I swap to 1st I miss how much more immersive it is...

EDIT: I am sooo HAPPY we are finally getting vertical camera sliders on console! Finally we'll be able to achieve a 3rd person cinematic look - awesome!

I hate how bad 1st person is in ESO.

Up until Templar’s Jabs change made the skill glitch out your 1st person view, it kind of worked as a setting, but encounters in ESO do not support 1st person and I really wish they did.

AoEs are completely impossible to gauge, because the outer ring of them isn’t visible in 1st person, and it would be such a simple fix in theory to just highlight the perimeter of them so you can easier see what’s going on without needing an add-on, but we haven’t had any support.

    That’s what really frustrates me.

I love 1st person in The Elder Scrolls, but ESO tacked it on and completely forgot about it which was in theme with every other system that came out the first few years, it’s gotten so bad now, that you can’t even see anything when playing an Arcanist, and although I haven’t tested it on the new Dragonknight, these new animation changes are way over the top with visual clutter.

Some of the animations look absolutely dire in first person to the point of giving me a headache, plus things like Arcanist beam take up a vast majority of the screen to the point you can't actually see anything.

The game's combat also isn't streamlined well to make first person viable, since you're not aware of anything to the sides or behind you (like mechanics) so anything above overland questing you'd have to swap if you want to play your role correctly.

When I'm playing an Elder Scrolls game, I'm all-in. First Person is a must (shout out to that mod that allows you to see your body in 1st person), I make sure that I eat every day, sleep every night, and I'll even be particular enough to walk everywhere (because running would be exhausting).

ESO is an MMO. I play differently here.

1st person in ESO is extremely restrictive. You're missing out on so much that's going on around you. The game was clearly designed for 3rd person in mind, and a lot of content does expect you to be able to have a 360° view around your character. And I can accept that - I have my games where I go hardcore into roleplaying, and ESO is more of a foundation that I can build my stories off of instead of using ESO's stories as an end in themselves (and with the writing quality the way it is, I need to fill in the gaps so my character doesn't have an IQ of -7).

Now as a tank main, I totally end up in 1st person in some areas. Let's face it, pulling the atros under Yolnahkriin or trying to deal with bosses like Felms or the Stone Husk mean I've got glorious views of various boss's nether regions because I'm about 3cm from the wall myself.

I'm a big RPer in both the single player games and ESO but I use 3rd person almost always. If I'm roleplaying then I'll be very zoomed in. For me I like the experience to be as if I'm watching my characters interact with the world, not that I myself am them, so I like the behind the shoulder view. I can adjust the camera in ESO especially well for this.

But if I'm doing dungeons/trials etc, I'll be max zoomed out.

As someone who grew up on FPSs it took me a while to adjust to 3rd person in other games, but Skyrim made me a convert. 1st person feels cramped and claustrophobic.

    Plus, my character looks goood.

I do use 1st person a lot, even in combat if it's something unserious like overland, but mostly to explore, interact with things and housing, 1st person is super useful for housing when you want to move things precisely.

So yeah, both is good, but combat on 1st person is just nightmare fuel on harder content.

In Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim I switch between the two frequently, depending on where I am and what I'm doing, but usually prefer 1st person for combat.

In ESO I use 3rd person almost exclusively and only switch to 1st if I'm trying to look at something and my character is in the way.

I actually don't find 1st person more immersive for me, probably because my character in RPGs is never me (if they were they wouldn't be out adventuring, they'd stay in town where there's far less risk of getting killed), it's a story I'm experiencing from one character's perspective, but I don't think seeing through their eyes is any more immersive than looking over their shoulder, so if a game offers me a choice I pick whichever I think gives me the clearest view. Sometimes when a game doesn't offer a choice I find that really annoying, especially if they're in 3rd person and have the camera stuck far too close so the character is constantly in the way of what I'm trying to look at.

I played levels 1-50 entirely in first person in 2014!

I had a goal of enjoying 1-50 as a typical TES game, not an MMO. I did all shards, lorebooks and exploration without the assistance of addons during this period. It was a lot of fun. But I didn't plan on doing it forever and started to play eso like an mmo upon hitting vet levels.

3rd. But only because ESO is designed for it. You miss a lot if you play in 1st person. For the first few years, I did that, until it became clear to me that I was missing lots of animations during quests and such, and that combat is easier in 3rd person.

I play in 1st person in every other game that offers the choice.

i think generally 3rd person, but it depends

in eso its basically 3rd person for everything, i would not use first person ever lol

in other elder scrolls games, such as skyrim and oblivion, i prefer playing in first person when im trying to aim ranged attacks (bow or magic) as its much easier to aim in first person, but i prefer being in 3rd person for doing any kind of melee combat

some of the enemies get so spazzy it would be impossible to keep track of them in first person

Llike many others I started completely in first person, but switched to 3rd fairly early on in order to cope with mobs a bit better and see the AoE markers (not that I always notice them soon enough, but I try!)

A couple of times I do go into 1st. For example, using the enchanting and jewellery stations in Riften under the tent, I find it easier to get in and out in 1st person. Similarly any time there's a really low ceiling on a slope. The other time is for the pillar puzzles in the Khajiit temples - hard to figure out which moon phases are showing unless you're in first person!.
