Being on the forum that gives points to users for doing cool things or being me, does it matter to you what your fake internetz points total is?

Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

Not outside the forum, but you see the stars next to your name? You get those stars for hitting point totals, not for posting a lot.

In theory, a person with more stars would have earned them through useful posts, and would be more inclined to reflect that reputation.

In practice, people get a lot of points for posting utter rubbish and insults, so no the stars don't serve much purpose.

If they got rid of the LOL button I think it would be a more useful system at any rate. LOL is currently used as the disagree button a lot of the time, and also rewards trolling people for laughs.

its a useful system wasted by bad implementation

if it was set up properly, then there would be a natural quality control and 'best of' would actually be the best of instead of a random selection of the latest diatribe.

I, for one, don't care at all, but go ahead and hit "Awesome" or "LOL" right down there below this text just in case I'm wrong and I actually do.

Seriously though, it's true, the star system and the "Best of..." page seem to emphasize quantity and immediate emotional reaction over quality and thoughtful reflection. But that's just the defining feature of all internet-based social media. It requires a little more patience and effort to find good posts and comments sometimes but it can be done.

Actually I have noticed the "best of" doesn't reflect exclusively how many Awesomes, LOLs, Agrees, or Insightfuls your post gets. While reading over the "Best of" I have come across a few, "How did this get here posts?" only to click on the header and noticed they have no "likes" what so ever. The only conclusion I could come up with is that they had been marked as answering the op's question.

I must also shamefully admit I'm low on Insightful.

Actually, someone mentioned in another thread that LOL doesn't actually add to your point total. I checked my points and confirmed. So it turns out that being funny isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Have to agree on the LOL point.. I'm actually glad mine is low because of the way it's used on the forum right now. I only care about my points on forums in general if it actually means something; right now I don't think points/stars mean anything, unfortunately.

    (/sarcasm off)

Instead of losing the LOL button I think they should add a WTH button (also worth 0 pts. maybe even a -1 point) for butt heads like me. Laughter is good medicine and is needed from time to time when a thread starts to turn sour. The down side to this though, is just like everything else, someone will find a way to abuse and/or exploit it.

Which was not my intention here.

Mate ... why do you even care about your forums points? :P

We just had a discussion about how they dont matter.

If you go to a disscussion and make a valid point , nobody is going to check (or atleast i hope) how many points you have before listening to what you said.

It is a nice feature to have , so you can give others the agree/awesome... but in the end of the day , it is just there to be a funny perk.

Actually it is both... You have to have a certain amount of points and posts to get the stars...
