Was kicked for playing as a Sword and Shield DPS...

Kind of hit the nail on the head for why I don't do group content - other people try to tell you how to play, rather than enjoy the experience how you want to play, with your build, not theirs or some meta they believe is the "only way".

If you insist on doing group content, try to get your own group together, arrange with everyone in advance.

    It goes both ways.

I don't think that it's a hot take to want a pleasant and relatively quick experience with the Dungeon Finder.

Like, we shouldn't be looking to grief other players based upon our own selfishness, either. That goes both for ultra-speedrunners who leave everyone in the dust and also for players using like objectively bad roleplaying builds when they have the option to... NOT do that (it doesn't have to be a meta build but there are limits that one's conscience should place as to how large of an imposition that one wants to make upon the other parties).

Like, just because I CAN go into a dungeon without any gear and do exclusively unarmed Heavy Attacks for 500 DPS doesn't mean that I SHOULD do that or that I wouldn't be basically trolling the whole group by being that self-indulgent.

For the OP, as long as you were not stealing aggro from the tank and were not completely slacking on damage then it's fine and you should not have been kicked.

I agree for the most part, like, there are limitations for me personally. I won't completely gimp myself. I might make a build based on immersion, but I will do my best to build that character well to make him as useful as possible with the chosen build. For an example, I was popping 52K DPS on the 21 Mill Trial Dummy, so not great by any stretch of the imagination, but is high enough to say that I am doing my role on a Normal Dungeon. My Bash hits hard, very hard. Now that does not calculate in my Killer's Blade, which hits extremely hard once the Boss/NPC hits 50%. So I'm sure my DPS is actually higher than that when you factor that in. I figured it was high enough that other players would be okay with it in Normal Dungeons. What I didn't take in to consideration, is that players in general aren't running a parser to see for themselves.

As I said earlier, the build is capable of DDing even in most veteran content, you'll also have higher survivability than most. Perfectly fine numbers for a normal dungeon.

BUT you can also get wayyyy higher numbers than 52k on a parse with it. :p

I feel for you man and I applaud your spirit. Just keep going. In normals there are so many fresh characters without actual builds, you may as well have been 95 % of the group DPS and they probably would have still voted you out. Petty, narrow-minded players without a real clue are often just going by appearances. And their run usually wont go any faster with a 3-player group...

Best thing you can do is to keep doing your thing, showing others that fun is allowed. The most fervent and dogmatic meta worshippers in the dungeon finder tend to rock the lowest APM and combat awareness stats, because that wasn't explained in the build video they watched. Good players usually carry such a run by themselves and it hurts no one to at least stop for a second and look if the other player might be more apt than the first glance betrays.

Normal dungeon, you can bring whatever build you want so long as you perform your role on a basic level. Bring a taunt if you're a tank, bring at least a couple healing skills if you're a healer, or consistently pump out higher DPS than Supports if you're a DPS.

Veteran dungeon, no. Even having spammable, that skill line is just not it for DPS. Beams (Arcanist and Templar) with their insane level of range and cleave/execute will be always come out on top. Makes clearing a lot easier for someone who ENJOYS CLEARING CONTENT in an efficient manner.

The meta is stale, but hey I don't design the game.

I wish we could dps normally with a shield on, anyway. Not in this game, or you are subject to be kicked and you should not get the right numbers as a dps anyway.

Reminds me of old Dungeons and Dragons aka Advanced Dungeons and Dragons...the best set up for a fighter or a paladin was the (long)sword and the shield...^^

I'm rarely in a group that wants to kick someone, and when it did happen, sometimes it made sense, but most of the time it didn't. The one that made sense was when someone disconnected and wasn't coming back. We kicked him so the group leader's companion could be active.

    Some other times I remember:

I wanted to kick a dead person once. They died at the first boss and didn't accept a rez, so they stayed dead. Every time we initiated a boss fight, their dead body was transported to us (which was pretty funny). They were obviously along for the ride (it was a "do dungeons" endeavor week) and I hate freeloaders. I asked for a vote, but the group leader wouldn't initiate one. If I'd been group leader, I would have tried to kick the person. I don't care if you're doing 1 dps as long as you're doing something.

Another time, someone in the group asked right away if it was okay that they were only level 49 (dungeon was normal Imperial City Prison). One person said, no way, you need to be at least 160 CP. I was group leader and didn't initiate a vote because it's not a hard dungeon. I said he'd be fine, and we had no trouble completing the dungeon. Person who initially wanted a vote didn't complain and was fine for the rest of the run.

Other times, the leader has initiated a vote with no explanation at all.

When you're in a pug, crazy and random things happen. Most of the pugs I've been in wouldn't have thought anything of you being sword and board. As many have already said, for most normal dungeons, it doesn't really matter what build you're playing.

Also want to add, congrats on making an S&S dps build! I’ve been wanting to for the longest time but I hate how un-synergistic the skills are.

The skill line has two spammables, Reverb and Deep Slash, yet Reverb eclipses the skill completely, then you also have two stuns, in Invasion and once again… Reverb.

I really wish that the skill line would stop stepping on it’s own toes, and I’d love a revision to their passives, with the choice to convert S&S into a damage weapon fully, sort of like an inversion of the Frost Staff passive.

Why not use power slam instead of reverberating bash?

If you’re doing S&S damage, the game pigeonholes you into Bash Damage.

Reverb hits twice, then with S&S you’re going to want to animation cancel Bashes into your attacks, so essentially you’re multiplying the benefit of Bash Damage sets and Enchantments by 3 when running Reverb instead of 2 with Power Bash.

Now if the game allowed you to build enough Weapon and Spell Damage to compete with Bash Damage, you would choose Deep Slash over Power Slam, but it’s not possible, so no matter what build you make for S&S damage, it all leads back to Reverb.

Edit: Just want to add, I do NOT like this. Good design would have both Power Slam and Deep Slash competitive for theorycrafting, but you almost never see the skills. It is also exhausting gameplay to have to constantly be heavy attacking, as you cannot unbind Bash on console, leaving you in a perpetual state of blocking, with zero stamina recovery.

As a tank the only time I even notice what the dps is wearing is if stuff is dying super slow. And as a dps the only time I care is if they're outparsing me lol.

Getting kicked from a normal is wild. Tryhard much?

Did they say anything in chat? Could it be they thought you were a tank in a wrong role and kicked you because they wanted a DD instead?

Because kicking someone in a normal dungeon says more about the kickers than about the ... kickee? (Is that a word?) The only reasonable explanation I could come up with is they thought you were a real tank and the tank didn't want someone else to taunt or they wanted a "real" DD so the dungeon goes faster. Or they were not the most experienced players and needed an experienced DD to get them through the dungeon? I don't think that the issue was you, per se, but between the other players' ears. Because really, in a normal dungeon nothing really matters. You can complete them naked. Literally.

I have a meme build I rarely take out with randos, but I have tanked a normal dungeon or two with pugs when queuing to RND. When Arcanist came I noticed the tank skill line is completely broken. So I made a naked build. Not even s&b, completely naked. Even as pure class without scribing it could tank some vet DLC dungeons and nSE, and now with scribing and subclassing it's even stronger. I have tanked nN-C and nBGF with it with ease. I have never been kicked from a normal random dungeon with that character despite being completely naked.

But anyway, good on you for playing a meme build. Normal dungeons are perfect for that. Don't let the haters get you down. I have played a 2xS&B bash build in Cyrodiil a couple of years ago -- it's a fun ganking playstyle. First go in with Invasion (stun), poke with back bar Master's s&b (minor and major breach, and Master's increases your resistances) and then front bar bash bash bash. Is your build using Deadland's Demolisher and Veiled Heritance as well? Keep at it.

Sadly, this individual waited until we downed the first boss (with ease) before kicking me, saying in group chat, "Sword and Shield is not DPS."
Nevermind my previous post's steelmanning their position. Yeah, forget about these players. If you need a meta DPS in a normal dungeon, you might want to switch to something more on your level -- I heard LEGO makes pretty exciting games.

If this was AITA, the answer would be NTA. This who said s&b is not dps is definitely TA. No doubt about it.
