If ZOS added new weapon classes, would you care if they ignored existing Motifs?

I keep seeing people say no new weapon types will ever be added because ZOS wouldn't want to create a version of the new weapon for all existing Motifs in the game. But would you actually care about that at this point?

just clicked on the motif match option as that's the reason ZOS has given for not adding new weapons yet.

quote from an interview from 2 years ago.
    https://wccftech.com/elder-scrolls-online-shadow-over-morrowind-qa-creative-director-talks-necrom-chapter-community-requests/

Beyond classes, would it be possible to add new weapon skill lines? I believe that's something Elder Scrolls Online still hasn't done.

I mean, anything is possible in the future. We're going on nine years now. We didn't have many of the things in the game now when we launched. New weapons and weapons skill lines are difficult, though, as we'd have to do a lot of art. There are a hundred different motifs in the game and they all have weapons associated with them. If we added a new weapon, we would have to add that to all of them. That's just one small consideration to think about that. It would be a huge undertaking.

i think they could retroactively add to old styles after adding new Weapons,
but if ZOS wants to add new weapons they will likely only do it with old styles for the new weapons.

It would be weird if it didn’t.

If they added e.g. spears, I could see them rolling them out over time, but they really should get them for all motifs.

There is also the possibility of new weapon lines without motifs needed, that being “1H duellist” or “Unarmed” lines. However, I see two major things there:
    1. Those can technically already be done in game now, just by unequipping one or both weapons. You lose out on a lot, but there are animations and damage values for light and heavy attacks in the game now.
    2. The ‘missing gear slot(s)’ leave you at a disadvantage due to stats and set bonuses
That essentially means that adding those (which would be a much easier sell than something like spears) would kinda need to be a free update instead of a “Chapter-selling feature.” You’d also need a way to account for the lost stats and set bonuses (a passive to dupe the set bonus on the respective ring? Or an invisible wristband ‘gear’ piece?).

Another consideration for any new weapon: it’d need to drop in all sets and be craftable at a set station (Cloth, Smithing, Wood, or JC). Cloth and Smithing are pretty full with 14 things each craftable, but Wood only has 6 things (4 staves, bow, shield) and JC only 2, so those stations are probably ideal. And new set pieces means new drops for all sets in the game (good to get players back into old content, bad that that’s a lot of grinding).

IF its something like a crossbow i wouldnt care that much if they only give you a handful of motifs to start off with tbh...can also say "only the dwemer built these and thats the art style"

but I think there is also room for new weapon skill lines that use existing stuff for example

1h + Spell - can simply use existing one hands or swords

Other Staff types for example Alteration

They’d absolutely have to do all the art, unless you’re ok with not adding the new weapons to existing sets or have them look really out of place compared to the other gear. But that also opens the question of what happens to your stickerbook, because it would reduce completion rates and increase everybody’s reconstruction costs.

Also, it’s not just about redoing old art, but the added burden of having to work more on every single new style in the future.

Been thinking of just brass knuckles for unarmed— would hardly look like anything anyways like how jewelry doesn’t show up. Spears can use the staff texture. Throwing knives would be dagger texture. Etc etc.

While I would adore for new weapons to come in all existing styles, I think it would still be acceptable if they were only added to present or future motifs. Maybe add them to a handful of extra motifs (like the ancestral racial motifs and ancient daedric) so we get a decent variety.

The plus of more weapon types far outweigh the cons of not having them available on every motif.

Yes but they can get around that pretty easy by making it something that wouldn't need a motif such as unarmed or using the spells in your hand. 1H and Spell would be a pretty familiar call back to the mainline Elder Scrolls games and would not require any additional work on weapons since all of the 1H weapons for it already exist.

That was my thinking as well. Sure - having all motifs for a new weapon would be great, but I'd be contend with just a limited number if that would mean that we'd actually get a new weapon skill line.

Besides, as others have mentioned, some potential new weapons wouldn't even need to have new motifs in the first place. One Hand and Rune for example could just use the existing motifs for the weapon and something invisible for the rune.

They could add all manner of Staff types and simply recycle existing Staff motifs. That would be the lowest-effort method to implement new weapon types.

Finally having like an Alteration Staff for proper Magicka-based tanking would be amazing. Ditto for Conjuration Staff or something so that we could have class-agnostic summons (like Flame Atronachs, etc.), which has always been a popular request. The possibilities for Magic expansion are endless as the Schools of Magic in TES are very robust.

Will have to mull this one over.

I know for certain that one argument for not adding them to every motif is that I wouldn't want my main crafter to intantly have all that motif knowledge become incomplete. Not to mention the ensuing (and likely very very costly) chase to track them all down and add them to the lore library.

    WTB: Classic jabs skill style

I'm not sure ZOS understands what weapons are supposed to look like due to their making the jabs animation a night hollow stave that moves in a jerky shoveling motion.

I think I would rather have additional skill, including animations and morphs, for existing weapons. I also think a new staff type (illusion or alteration?) would be awesome, not because of motifs, but those are just what would interest me most.

I would love to see Spear weapons, especially if they're able to bring mounted combat to us.

Also would love to see a wider variety of staves - alteration, illusion, and mysticism are all staples in Elder Scrolls Lore so why not have staves dedicated to those trees?

Crossbows would also be great to have as a higher base-damage ranged weapon than a Bow (with appropriate drawbacks).

Make any of the new weapons appearance be unique to that weapon that way they don't have to redo any motif from the past or future. You know like the weapon itself comes with its Motif attached and cannot be changed ever. Like a monster helmet in a sense

And if the new weapons are staff based weapons all the old motifs will work perfect with them personally I would like to see a poison staff

They should of added new weapon each quarter instead of subclass. Subclass should of been tied into scribing limiting it to only active skills and game breaking passive stacking.

They've changed global systems before. So the precident is set for them to do it again.
This recent update has made me sad. Sad for the game. Sad for the community. Sad to pay whatever it is now. I want the previous eso back.

Weapon passives can't be used by werewolves, so I don't really care either way.

There is a presumption in the question that new weapon classes are wanted. I have no way to indicate by voting that I do not want any new weapons.
