Do you only have one character per playable class, or do you have multiple characters of the same class? This is referring to the base class you choose at character creation, which determines your Class Mastery, Class Sets, and other similar things.

    Multiple characters per class
I am sitting at 15 characters now. I have at least two of each class, except Arcanist.

For me, it’s basically for two reasons.
    1. First reason, is RP ideas. I get an idea in my mind, usually for some outfit or aesthetic reason, and create a character. During my early years, I created, recreated, and race-changed my characters a lot while I figured out what I wanted them to be. Definitely not the best use of money, but here we are.
    2. Second reason, I have this weird obsession with having the same amount of characters in each alliance. So, I find an idea to keep them the same.

For those interested, here's a deeper breakdown of my toons.
    Aldmeri Dominion.
    1. High Elf Warden. My main character. I like nature-based characters and high elves, so this character got all my love. He's mainly a healer and DPS. Often use Templar skill lines with him.
    2. High Elf Sorcerer. My first character when I came over to PSN 7 years ago. I had mained a Templar on XBox and wanted something different. Definitely regret that decision. Right now, he's using Arcanist and Nightblade skill lines to make healing and DPS more enjoyable.
    3. High Elf Templar. The character I wish was my main. I created him because I regretted having a non-Elf templar, but couldn't bring myself to delete or race-change that existing toon yet again. As a healer, he's a Warden/Templar/Necro combo. DPS wise, he's using Storm Calling and Assassination with Jabs.
    4. High Elf Dragonknight. Lucifer Morningstar roleplay. I really like the blonde hair, red eyes, and fiery temper vibe of him. He also uses Templar for DPS and Healing builds.
    5. High Elf Nightblade. Wanted an attractive woman to play; modeled her after my wife. She's got this goth GF vibe. As a healer, she uses siphoning, green balance and dark magic. For dps, uses crystal frags with assassination and siphoning.

    Daggerfall Covenant
    1. Imperial Templar. My original templar. He started as a Breton, but after race changing him to High Elf, I regretted not having an Imperial. So I changed him back again. He's remained an Imperial for a few years now. I haven't bothered subclassing him yet.
    2. Imperial Dragonknight. Original envisioned him as a Akatosh-devoted paladin, which has held up. He has some cool knightly and Akaviri-themed outfits.
    3. Breton Necromancer. I wanted at least one of every class, so I settled on this race/class combo. Original intention was to have a dark knight, but I always struggled with Necromancer gameplay. Right now, he's a frost mage.
    4. Breton Warden. Pure High Isle roleplay. I wanted a Green Knight and backup for my main's outfits. Right now he's a Stamden of some kind.
    5. Orc Sorcerer. Had a funny name, made this guy as a gag character. Never play him anymore.

    Ebonheart Pact
    1. Dark Elf Nightblade. My evil character. Mostly for world stabbing tours, and Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood tasks.
    2. Dark Elf Dragonknight. A dark elf's dark elf kinda guy. Currently a DK/Warden combo to maximize the Vvardenfell feel.
    3. Dark Elf Arcanist. Seemed like the most natural combo for this class.
    4. Nord Warden. I wanted a winter warrior, but I've yet to realize it in any meaningful way. He's just collecting dust.
    5. Nord Necromancer. Definitely created this guy so I would have the same amount of classes per alliance. Went with a Greymoor vibe, but never play him. I think he's basically an Oakensorc.

Yes, originally because Mag and Stam characters were built completely differently before hybridization.

And now, because it's because those characters already existed and because it's easier to have specific builds for specific characters rather than having to futz with tons of Armory slots or moving gear from character to character.

It definitely makes it easier to do theme builds.

I'm not sure which answer to choose.

I have one of each class except Warden (I can't handle the huge bear), but 2 Sorcerers. I made the second Sorcerer at a friend's urging to be a purely PvP character, but not long after I got her set up he quit playing, so I made her my PvP and main group content character. She uses the banekin and my other doesn't use any pets.

    Option 3:

I have some classes extra off but some only one, mainly for specific reasons.

I have a dedicated Fishing character, an Imperial necromancer.
I have a Khajit Thief, which is a Nightblade.
I have a Khajitt Assassin, which is a Nightblade.
I have a High Elf Nightblade that used to be a Trial DD, lately he's more my pirate running event stuff as a farmer with his aoe build.

I have a dark Elf Necro Vampire.
I have a dark Elf Sorc Werewolf

This goes on for 16 characters, they all have a purpose

I prefer to have a second character of the same class if I want to play the class differently, and this is largely due to roleplay reasons and what my characters are like in my mind.

Yes. I have a Bowden and a Frostden but moreso for boredom busting than actually kitted up to do anything. I also have 2 nightblades. One for exclusively stealing as a RP tradition (I always make a sneak khajiit in every Elder Scrolls game) and one that's I had tried to take seriously but never got into so it ended up an event ticket alt.

I don't actually play any of those heroes very often though. The main heroes I spend my time on are my Templar, Sorc, and Arcanist and I only have one of each of those.

Neither? I have two Arcanists thanks to last year's Golden Pursuit where gaining ~45 levels covered multiple pursuits and all my existing characters (one of each class) were well past Level 50. The character was fun, so I kept it around.
I'm fresh out of outrage, but I could muster up some amused annoyance if required.

I have 36 characters across two accounts. Some are storage mules, but I'd guess that I actually play about 16 of them. They're all different combinations of race / class / build / role / cosmetics. The variety keeps the game fresh for me. I created most of them before we had the armory system, so perhaps I wouldn't have as many if I'd started playing more recently, and would use the armory instead.

    One of each.

I spend ages making my characters, and I have their Class at the core of their being. I'm all about the character creation, and one of the really important things for me is that each of my characters can be completely unique... which means they each have their own Class.
(I originally wanted them to each have a different weapon too, but we only have 6 weapons so they did end up doubling up - sorta. Still nobody has the same exact types. I was also originally going to make them all unique races until I decided that my Arcanist would be my Warden's brother, so I do have two Nords)

Having said that, I do currently have 8 characters in my roster; the last one is just a name reserver parked in his very own holding cell until ZOS blesses me with a new Class so I can make him for real. I have about 9 pages worth of lore research on his backstory done and most of it planned out, with the only hole being for what he does once he enlists in the legion that essentially gives him the training to do whatever his class is going to be.

I really hope that subclassing will open the door to more Classes. I know they were talking when Arc released about the animation requirements and the issues of giving more character slots, so technically now that Subclassing is a thing, they can allow people who want to play with new lines on established characters that option, and others like me who want to see the game fresh can also do so.

Also, if anyone's interested, my current roster:
    m7k8sy5qbav9.png
    Garnag gro-Dragol, Dragonknight
    Ojel, Necromancer
    Azurik the Shark, Sorcerer
    Conoch, Nightblade
    Lauravenya of Boralis, Templar
    Skjoldr the Curse-Bringer, Arcanist
    Ragnar Bearfang, Warden
    Arcturus Caudex, ???

Though looking at this lineup, I have made some minor edits to some of their costumes so I need to do another one the next time PTS goes over...

Yes, because I enjoy creating characters with different looks, stories, and playstyles. Although the armory and subclassing makes this easier to do on fewer characters, I like to keep each character within a range that fits them thematically, morally, style-wise, etc.

I have a paladin, a druid, a templar, an assassin, a elementalist, a summoner, a ranger etc etc

I would recommend to you the add on personality designer which allows to create custom idle animations that play randomly based on emotes and mementos (Which is also great to make use of them) and greatly enhances a character fantasy

My plan was to one day have 2 of each class and use armory for 2 builds on each to cover mag dps, stam dps, tank, healer. I’m too lazy for that in actuality but I did also have a habit of making a new character based on each chapter for a while. I ended up with multiples of all except arcanist (I was going to make another but it didn’t look right) and templar (I didn’t like templar until I made her into a tank).

I had two of each until Hybridization, like probably everybody else. And after Hybridization I had one character per "playstyle".

What does that mean? Until Subclassing, classes offered different playstyles that were determined by their combination of abilities and gear choices. And that made them uniqely recognizeable. Tht also gave characters a theme and style to lean into and was a good base to create the rest of the character.
All classes except Templar (you always had to use a version of Puncturing Strikes) and Arcanist (Always the Beam) offered at least two playstyles. Some ranged and Magicka, others melee and Stamina. Still others were ranged and used Stamina. it was always quite distinct.

Now, I am still creating more and more playstyles with subclassing and even bringing back a couple of deleted characters.
It's amazing that ZOS keeps records of deleted chars for so long.

I have six characters, one physical and one magical in each faction, for lore and background reasons. My main is a Bosmeri huntress (nighblade), and I also have one Dunmeri sorceress, two dragonknights (Orc and Nord) and two templar (Altmer and Breton).

I like the Templar class, probably more than the NB (I mainly fight with weapons skills with my main, I don't like NB combat skills) and the DK class can fit various weapons styles in my opinion - my Nord fights with axe and shield and dual daggers, while my Orc has an axe and shield and a warhammer.

I've never tried the Arcanist though (I don't like this class, everytime I see an arcanist in game it's someone laser-beaming everything to death in seconds, preventing other players from enjoying the fights), and I don't like what I've experienced of the Warden and Necromancer.
